As the minutes passed, Elisabeth didn't break her stride. She kept running at an even and consistent pace, though the toll it took on her was slowly betrayed in the way her breathing became labored, heat flushed through her neck, and sweat glistened on her brow.[break][break]

"You were mortal once, and some part of you remembers being mortal yet," she quipped, taking a moment to grin at him. "I don't think anyone can forget how it feels to be powerless. No matter how much power you amass, in the end."[break][break]

And wasn't that true for her? Killing for freedom, ascending to Rocket admin and underboss in such a short tenure... Did she ever stop fearing being vulnerable and defenseless?[break][break]

"We all become monsters in Rocket, I think. Just different types of monsters, sacrificing different parts of our humanity. You aren't alone, at least, in that respect."[break][break]

Her voice had become slightly hushed here, though the words danced between shallow breaths as she ran.[break][break]

"I don't know if there's anything wrong with accepting your lot in life, though. Far more people are unhappy fighting their fate."

He crosses his arms as this suddenly turned from a gym session into a therapy session. [break][break]

He sits there waiting for her to answer, and during her explanation he ups the speed on the treadmill as he begins to grow impatient, for someone who had all the time in the world, his patience was thin.

Her lungs felt like they were on fire. Her knees were threatening to give way. Her feet felt like lead, dragged against the treadmill.[break][break]

"Freedom, certainly." A ragged breath interrupted her here. "Happiness, I think, to some degree. And--"[break][break]

--and what else? She wasn't sure she knew how to love anymore, but could Rocket be blamed for that? She didn't think she could be 'good,' but wasn't that true before she sold her soul to Declan Walsh?[break][break]

How much of her had been a monster before ever joining Rocket?[break][break]

Too many minutes had passed beyond her limit, spite and sheer determination keeping her going to the brink of exhaustion. It was this question, this momentary lapse of an answer, that finally felled her resolve.[break][break]

She stumbled from the treadmill this time, gasping for air as she leaned against its railing. It left her feeling pathetic next to a man who seemed incapable of expressing his own weakness. Staring up at him, a faint laugh answered before she finished her thought.[break][break]

"--and the willingness to surrender."

He stays silent as he can tell she was running ragged, she was on fumes at this point she eventually ran out of juice it seemed. [break][break]

When she stumbles, she picks herself back up and Bryan grins. "You passed my test." he said as bryan places a hand on her shoulder patting her there. "Earlier you asked me if I thought you can become stronger." he said as his arm began to glow, wisps of energy shedding off his body as Elisabeth's fatigue would slowly wash away as if it had never been there in the first place and her body would recover at an incredible rate as Bryan took away her fatigue. [break][break]

Yet despite what should have been an uplifting moment for Elisabeth, scenes flashed through his mind, the joy of finally finding xerneas and finding the cure, her corpse, their corpses, the flames of insanity he stoked that burned littleroot alive, necrozma ripping away what last fragment of her he had. "I gave myself entirely to searching out a cure for my fear of death, and in return I found a creature that would never let me die. But the price I paid for that was losing one of the few people who made me feel like life was worth living. Now I'll never see her again." [break][break]

"Do you want to still pursue it? Power like mine?" he said as the semblance of emotion in his eyes began to retreat as he tried to collect himself.

How strange it was, to have her body rebuilt and renewed as if Creation itself had blessed her with new life.[break][break]

Elisabeth rose to her feet, wonderingly, as she listened to bryan delarosa share his tale aloud. Visions flashed in her mind, memories she didn't recognize and yet remained intimately familiar, as she swallowed back this sense of loss that was not her own.[break][break]

Did she want this? Could she have this?[break][break]

"I'm not sure what I have left to lose," Elisabeth confessed at last. I'm always losing, she wanted to add, but didn't. It felt like weakness to say that here, to him.[break][break]

She turned towards him then, an answer resolving itself as her limbs regained their strength.[break][break]

"I'd rather have power and be punished for it," she decided, "then be powerless and made to suffer for no reward."
