He bring Ajax with him this time. Generally, the Riolu is not a Pokémon Mars would bring along where he can run into people, but that’s a rarity at Mount Pyre, and especially so when it’s this early in the morning. He hadn’t had a lot of time to continue training Ajax as of late, and with the new year having just begun, that’s one thing he intends to change.

The small canine pokémon keeps up with his jogging speed by maintaining a steady pace. Once, it had struggled, but it has been a while since Mars had begun training Ajax like this. When will he evolve? Will he ever evolve? Only time will tell if their bond grows strong enough and if he meets Raphael Pryde’s expectations for this study, but for now, Mars is actually quite pleased with the obedience and resolve shown by the Riolu.

They run and run and run… and, at one point or another, on their way up the mountain, the tendrils at the sides of the Riolu’s head (which are not ears, mind you) twitch as if noticing something.

Since he acts to defend, he does so without Mars’ command: PSYBEAM being stopped by a shielding FRENZY PLANT that continues on its way to hurt the cantankerous Delphox nearby.

“Not bad. The move choice needs some work, though.”

As they continue on their way up the mountain, lights shiny in the darkness that lies among trees. For moment, they catch the attention of the Riolu, seeming to distract him from their goal, but Mars is quick to correct that before it’s too late to do so:

Whatever Pokémon is there (Elgyem, Beheeyem, or Dottler are his best guesses) is no concern of theirs; it’s not what he’s looking for and deviating from their path won’t do them well.

Thankfully, when his name is spoken, Ajax is quick to turn his attention back to his trainer.

What awaits them at the very top of the mountain is an Alakazam. Well...it doesn't really await them and it's more like they happen to run into it, but given that it clearly intends on defending its territory, that still applies.

It's not a great match up for Ajax, especially given how tired he is after all that running, but the little Riolu stands tall, ready to attack if Mars commands him to do so.

Naturally, that's exactly what Mars does, because how could he miss out this chance to train his pokémon?
