Yet, just as he had with annalise henderson, he found himself completely failing to argue. In Anna's case, it was because she had no good reason. They were foes, unconnected outside of their opposing work identities, and yet she stood by her belief in him despite eveeything.[break][break]

With Julia, it was different. She'd seen him both masked and unmasked. She'd seen his worst betrayals and his greatest heroics. She'd fought side by side with him and been on the wrong side of his blade. Yet, untouched by the Rocket nature that let so many others give him a pass, she took the bad with the good and decided he had worth.[break][break]

The silence sttetched on for what felt like an eternity. Then, softly, Isaac began to speak. "I'm lucky to have one like you," he admitted. In many ways, he didn't feel like he deserved it. Despite that, he found himself unable to voice the thought. It died in his throat every time he tried to speak.[break][break]

"Thanks, Jules. I'd say I owe ya one, but. Kinda losing track how many of those we're up to now."

Julia didn't know what to make of the stretch of silence. They were friends, right? For a moment, Julia worried that Isaac didn't see them that way. After all, despite everything, they were on opposite sides of the faction line. But Julia was prepared for that possibility. A speech about how she didn't care about any of that was already welling inside of her when Isaac finally spoke.

[break][break]Oh, he did consider them friends! That made things a lot easier. "Me, too," she said. Despite—maybe even because of—their complicated relationship, Julia was really glad to have someone like Isaac in her life.

[break][break]Isaac seemed to be struggling with speaking again, and again, Julia wasn't quite sure why. When he finally got the words out, Julia pulled away from the hug to smile at him.

[break][break]"You don't owe me anything! Like I said, this is what friends do for each other. Trying to keep track of who owes what is business, not friendship." Her smile curled into a playful smirk. "And it sounds like a huge pain in the butt to keep track of."

[attr="class","skullbody"]It was ironic. This whole little hangout started because Julia had business she needed to discuss with Isaac. Now, she was the first to say they should cut the business and just focus on each other's friendship. It was a strange whiplash, but Isaac couldn't blame her. They'd worked through what they needed to talk about, and now they had more than enough business for one day.[break][break]

"Well, hey, I'll take it," Isaac said, shooting Julia a weary smile. "Arceus knows we've had more than enough pains in the ass - oh, I'm sorry, butt - for a lifetime. Maybe it's for the best we un-pain each other's butts as much as we can instead."[break][break]

That sounded ridiculous. Despite this, Isaac was sticking to it.[break][break]

"And if you ask me, that means giving this camping trip the proper kick-off it deserves!" He let himself step back from Julia's arms, turning to instead cast his focus towards the campsite they'd half-finished. It could use a bit of cleaning up, but maybe later. For now, fun times awaited. "C'mon, c'mon, let's get this fire started. I brought marshmallows and everything."[break][break]

Maybe, despite all the odds, everything was going to be okay.

In the end, Julia, no matter how serious she tried to be, wasn't good at just sticking to business. Especially when that business landed her on these heavy topics. She wanted her and her friends to be happy, and, yeah, sometimes that meant dealing with the hard stuff. But once that was dealt with, she was more than happy to get back to... well, she couldn't call it "business as usual" without being contradictory.

[break][break]She burst into giggles at Isaac's correction. "You can say 'ass' around me! I'm not a little kid!" Whoops, that was getting a bit too close to serious territory again. Time to divert.

[break][break]"Heck yeah! Wanna do the honors, Momo?"

[break][break]Momo let out an excited hoot, glad to see his trainer in such good spirits again. He scampered over to the fire pit and puffed a Will-O-Wisp at it. The ghostly flame floated to the kindling, and then it all lit up at once, a warm light shining in this unusually cold winter created by something that had caused so many people pain.

[break][break]But Hoenn would recover. It always had. And so would Julia, Isaac, and everyone else. Isaac's way of putting it—un-paining each other's butts—may have been silly, but it was something Julia agreed with. As long as she could, she would keep shining that light to help them.
