Even the most dark and seemingly dangerous of places can't quite escape the winds of a new year. Despite everything that has gone on in Sootopolis over the past year, she can spy the streets beginning to fill with little decorations and lights. Kids craft the frames of lanterns to be released on the beach at night, families cooking their best dishes and inviting each other over for dinners. At times, she's joined in on the fun, teaching the kids next door how best to weave their bamboo strips to form a sturdy structure. But she's been holding back a lot more, getting tired far quicker than usual and needing more time to herself.[break][break]

Which is probably why she makes this little trip through the town by herself, accompanied only by the ever-trusty Espeon, Dianthus. She greets familiar faces and offers them a smile, but she never quite lingers as she hurries on down to the water's edge with a small bag in hand.[break][break]

When she reaches her destination, all she hears is the gentle crashing of waves, the soft crunch of sand beneath her shoes. It's peaceful, quiet for now until the sun brushes past the edges of the horizon.[break][break]

He had come to Sootopolis because of the casino; obviously nothing to do with a certain criminal organization which is currently in control of the city. As one of the owners, coming to check in is important even if he’s not the one running things (especially because he’s not the one running things), and when the chance for those occasional trips does come, he also takes the opportunity to visit a couple of familiar faces in the city…

Thankfully, there happen to be eyes all over Sootopolis City. Eyes that wander; unnoticed by others. Eyes that watch silently. Eyes that show truths to their Architect.

“Then maybe you should.” His voice comes from nearby in response to the wish spoken out loud by Amaryllis. Had he just happened to be walking by just in time to hear her? Obviously.

She's almost like a cat with a cucumber when she hears the voice behind her, leaping into the air and spinning about in a panic.[break][break]

"Holy- Don't just sneak up on me like that! My heart can't take much of that!" Her voice is a little higher than usual, but that soon goes away with a cough. And a few friendly rubs against her shins from Dianthus.[break][break]

One day, such surprises might really be the death of her but for now, she'll meet such little things with a smile.[break][break]

"Yeah, I always come here when I have the time... So how are you doing, Mars?"

Mars? Sneaking up on people? He’d never do such a thing! Clearly what happened here is that Lis wasn’t paying enough attention to her surroundings. Should he feel at least a little bad? Maybe so, but he just smiles as he usually would.

“I can see why, it’s a great sight.” He responds, his gaze drifting to the waters that fill this portion of the crater. It’s a sight he sees most mornings, in fact, but someone like Lis wouldn’t know that he too has a home in Sootopolis…

“I’ve been great. Busy as ever, though.” That’s just how it is for him: his work never ends. “How about you? How’s this new year treating you?”

In the time Mars has know amaryllis karneva, he has known her to be someone who tries to optimistic about things, no matter how terrible they can sometimes get. He has never been that way, far from it, but he can appreciate it in people like her. Lis needs her optimism; it serves her well.

What matters is that she enjoys herself, and she has no doubt learnt to find little things that make her day. But deep down, she knows that maybe, even if it's only just a single day, it would be nice to have some proper company over for a simple meal or even tea.[break][break]

As much as he may be a private person, as much as he may not care for the company of most people, those who matter to him are so easily missed when they’re apart for too long. He thinks of BARNABY FINCH.

The schedule of Martín del Mar is always packed to the brim, but had the threat of an apocalypse not been a reminder to make time for the things that matter? Even when they’re simple things. Even when its an hour or two spent visiting the sister of one of his best friends so she won’t have to be all by herself. He can do that for her.

“Okay, sure. I’ll do what I can.” He responds with that radiant smile of his. No promises, but it’s a start. “Speaking of… Do you want me to walk you back home? You’ll catch a cold if you stay out here too long.”

It's almost enough to make her forget about the chilly weather, until Martín del Mar reminds her about catching a cold. And Dianthus latches onto the question by nudging her back in the direction of their home.[break][break]

"Alright, alright grandma. I'm not that fragile!" Though she complains, there's barely any resistance on her part, a hand gesturing for Mars to follow as she picks up her pace. "If you don't have places to be then sure! I have some freshly made lemon tarts back at the bakery too if you'd like to take some?"
