Verdant greens begin to fade into the warm tones of the desert at Route 111, Hoenn's varied environment showing itself in its truest form at places like this one. Resident of Mauville as Mars is (Mauville Hills, naturally), he's familiar with the sight of the route, but it's not often that he finds himself venturing into it like this: on foot and with a Samurott by his side.

The Samurott — Odysseus — is cautious, keeping a close eye on their surroundings. Mars can't blame it, it had definitely grown a little more wary of the world after a distortion had caused it to change, but while the pokémon is cautious, the banker himself seems as calm as ever.

mauville was not a place he often found himself in. however, today he was here in search of rock-type pokemon. he figured a change from his typical hunting ground might turn up new catches. with paldean species now lurking about, he wondered if he might be able to catch one himself.[break][break]

While one ranger captain (and Rocket deserter, let's not forget) may be in search of Rock types, it's the banker that spots the Lairon first. Bone white spikes stand out against stones, and Mars is quick to call his Samurott to action. All it takes is one short whistled note.

Pressurized water is shot by the pokémon at high speed, a HYDRO PUMP striking the Lairon and pushing it back against the rocks... not at all far from where boruta maher happens to be (sorry about the water and mud and all!). The Lairon attempts to resist, but in the end, the attack overwhelms it, giving Mars a chance to throw a Luxury Ball.

Only when retrieving the Luxury Ball does he spot a somewhat familiar face.

he was in hot pursuit, scrambling over rocks after what he’d just spotted sneaking over one.[break][break]

”oh no ya don’t, ya little shit—”[break][break]

suddenly, at this vantage point, he was able to see that he was not alone. that face was somewhat familiar, although he couldn’t immediately place it.[break][break]

he didn’t like the look of recognition staring back at him, that was for sure.[break][break]

”how’s it goin’.” a pause, before his attention was stolen again. ”excuse me.”[break][break]

the quilava flew into the air, chucked into a stone wall by the claws of bo’s barbaracle. he pitched a pokeball at the fallen fire-type before going to retrieve it.
