Beneath the vaulted dome of the Insectarium in the National Museum of Natural History, Zev sat next to at one of the many elegant white tables arranged for dinner. Across from them sat and @rosie, their expressions hidden behind the masks they wore. Yet their postures and body language radiated caution; he was familiar enough with both to know they were confused and wary about his invitation to eat.[break][break]

They had all made introductions by that point, so Zev turned to the menu.[break][break]

SOUPS:
  • Sharpedo fin soup.
  • Kalosian onion soup.

SALADS:
  • Arugula and watercress salad with mini oran berries, pecans, and gorgonzola cheese.
  • Sitrus berry and rawst berry fruit salad with balsamic glaze.

ENTREES:
  • Octillery ink pasta with garlic and tamato berries, with Oddish leaf chiffonade.
  • Medium rare Miltank steak with buttery mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, and a sherry reduction sauce.
  • Broiled Clauncher claws with chili aioli and Parmesan green beans.
  • Gourmet mushroom risotto with crostini and seasoned Smoliv oil.

"I'll have the onion soup, the arugula and watercress salad, and the Miltank steak," he told the waiting server standing beside the table with a notepad and pen in hand.[break][break]

Then Zev sat back, draping one arm around the back of Nenet's chair while he waited for the others to order. His blue eyes watched Caleb and Rosie closely, though the satisfied smirk that curled his lips suggested more amusement than his usual predatory intensity.[break][break]

"Have you been enjoying the night, you two?" Zev asked them lightly before taking a sip of his half-finished sazerac.

Caleb was suspicious. It was unlike Zev to be so...welcoming, so social. And yet, he seemed perfectly at ease beside his date, the intriguing - and, Caleb had to admit, rather captivating - . Zev was even smiling. Caleb knew his brother well enough to know that there was an undercurrent of sincerity to his amusement. He wasn't just putting on a "good civilian face". He was actually enjoying himself.[break][break]
Who the fuck was this woman and what had she done with his brother?[break][break]
Caleb's thoughts were interrupted by the server asking for his order. After a quick glance at the menu, he ordered the Sharpedo fin soup, arugula salad, and the Broiled Clauncher claws. He liked a bit of spice to his food, and the chili aioli sounded promising.[break][break]
Under the table, Umi settled into a curled-up, relaxed position as Zev addressed Caleb and @rosie. Caleb glanced at his date, trying to get a read on her mood. She had also seemed somewhat taken aback by Zev's offer that they all eat together; after all, she had worked with Zev in Kanto too. She knew how he could be.[break][break]
"'Course we have," Caleb answered, instinctively draping his arm around the back of Rosie's chair, mimicking Zev. "It's not every day that you get to attend a fancy party like this. Open bar, top tier food, interesting exhibits...what's not to enjoy?" Caleb kept his tone light, expression friendly, but his blue eyes hardened ever so slightly. Did Zev have some sort of agenda here? Or was he actually just being...pleasant?

Two shaky introductions later and a bewildered Caleb and Rosalie were now cornered into dining with Zev and his date. Even saying that didn't sound like it made sense. Rosalie had been in high intensity situations before and she was a trained actress, allowing her obvious confusion and hesitation to show would allow her to connect with Caleb more but she also couldn't help but feel that Zev was getting a kick out of watching them squirm.[break][break]

As long as he didn't interfere with her plans. Things would be okay.[break][break]

That's what she kept telling herself ever since they ran into each other at the bar earlier. But beyond that, what was this display he was putting on in front of them? Rosie was no fool, she knew just how much Zev was detached when it came to the social and emotional side of things. She'd also seen his façade in public before. Somehow this was neither one of the Zev's she was used to seeing this....this was a scary new side of him.[break][break]

Scary...yet interesting. Just who was this woman to Zev? Who was this woman anyway. She was beautiful so she could definitely see the appeal and she had this captivating charm about her that pulled people and grabbed people's attention. So again, Rosie could understand at least the base level of infatuation but instinct was telling her this was a touch different.[break][break]

Similar in ways to the strong attraction she felt towards Zev's little brother. She'd need to observe the two of them more. She supposed this double date wouldn't be such a terrible idea if she could get some information on Zev and his date out of it. She turned her attention to the menu as soon as Zev began to order, bringing her back to reality.[break][break]

"Oh I'll have the Sharpedo fin soup, the Sitrus fruit salad, and Mushroom Risotto. Thank you." she said with a bright smile as she waiter collected her menu. "Have you been enjoying the night, you two?" Zev now directed a question towards the both of them. "'Course we have," Caleb quickly answered before she felt him drape his arm around the back of her chair, his fingers lightly brushing against her bare shoulder.[break][break]

Azure orbs shifted between the brother's as she made note of the subtle competitiveness of Caleb's body language. "It's not every day that you get to attend a fancy party like this. Open bar, top tier food, interesting exhibits...what's not to enjoy?" Caleb continued, his tone was light and friendly but it didn't reach his eyes. Words left unsaid were being delivered through them.[break][break]

Rosie chuckled a little before turning her own practiced, softer gaze to Zev. "The evening's been lovely. The organizers did a fabulous job putting all of this together. Besides, it hold a sweeter note after avoiding all the doom and gloom of recent events, don't you think?" Rosie asked him with a charming smile. "What about you two? How have you two been enjoying the festivities?" her eyes twinkled with unbridled curiosity.
