Suspicion only deepened as the man continued his advance, though his unexpected words halted her in place.[break][break]

"I see. You've not been dead for long, then," she commented flatly. Silph had only resided in Hoenn as a region for a few years now. "He's still alive, if that's what you're asking."[break][break]

Though it wasn't; of course it wasn't. Elisabeth attempted to read his expression for any sign of allegiance to the councilman, some fondness or lack thereof. Grudges, she then recalled he'd said, and countless useless conjectures spun themselves up in her mind.[break][break]

Had FERNANDO SILPH murdered Alexander?[break][break]

...It didn't feel outside the realm of possibility.[break][break]

That thought dispersed as swiftly as it came into existence, fading like the mist that surrounded them both.[break][break]

"I know of him, yes," Elisabeth said, slow and uncertain in her reply. "And that he's a powerful man to call your enemy."[break][break]

Her posture had resumed its rigid defensive hold, though the curiosity in her gaze betrayed her as she waited for his explanation.

His question stirred some dark amusement in her, manifesting in a sudden sharp laugh that cut through the air like a knife.[break][break]

"Exception?" she repeated, an eyebrow lifted as she met his gaze.[break][break]

The resentment built into contempt the longer her proximity to the tree lasted, like a shadow drawing longer as daylight waned. A sneer crawled its way across her face as she laughed again. The sound rang cold and hollow.[break][break]

Some part of her, perhaps, had not viewed Alexander as someone living. What was a confession to a ghost in the middle of the Borders, where everything that haunted this place seemed to know far too much about the resentments of the living?[break][break]

For a reason she couldn't explain, the answer hitched in her throat. It wasn't so simple as she wanted it to be.[break][break]

The words for what she wanted to articulate in full didn't come.[break][break]

Her indignation leeched out, replaced with a weariness that resolved on an answer which was true, but felt insufficient.[break][break]

The confession came out clumsily, almost abashed in its shakiness, as she turned to look at the cracked seal with lowered eyes. A faint trace of slime was visibly slick around the stone, reminiscent of the strange creature she'd seen here not so many days ago.[break][break]

Her fingernails latched into her skin as a deep-seated grudge stirred with that memory, a grudge that had long preceded her time spent with the councilman. The two resentments still bled into one another, fairly or unfairly.[break][break]

"But I know what he did to others." A pause. "I don't think I'd have been spared the same fate."

If she could blame trusting him on some force outside of her control, instead of on her own poor judgment of character?[break][break]

She'd been wronged in similar ways, but no, not by Silph. Which made falling for that same lie all over again even more unforgivable.[break][break]

Harboring this private shame, Elisabeth shrank away from the softness in Alexander's voice, and from his unspoken assumption. She knew the only reason she hadn't been one of them was because she'd been warned.[break][break]

It was a warning she could have heeded much earlier, if she'd only been brave enough to ask for it.[break][break]

"Don't be sorry," she said instead, reassuring the stranger in return. It was strange how relaxed she suddenly was, speaking of this now, with him. Was that the influence of the Borders, or the man in front of her? She didn't know. "I'm fine. I don't think... I don't think he thinks anything of me, or ever did. In the end, it was a non-event."[break][break]

Even so, her smile didn't touch her eyes.
