The mention of ollie morales, of the future that had been stolen from her, stung more than the heat of his grasp. Droplets pricked the corners of her eyes and with a small quiver, she stared back at him, silent resentment blossoming.

That's when it happened. The earth spike erupted, piercing through the inn and barely striking Penelope herself. A piece of splintered wood hung, tittering off the edge of snapping. It was pointed at her heart. One more foot and she would've been struck.

A single breath escaped.

"I'm leaving."

Without waiting, she moved toward the inn's exit. Near its frame, she hovered, hesitant.

he tells himself it's this fucking place but there's more to it than that. his characteristics are amplified and he uses it as an excuse to lash out, to say what he wants to without the shackles that help him navigate relationships.[break][break]

leaving the bit of earth and sharp wooden splinters behind, he steps after her and would've reached out had she not stopped by the exit. there, she lingers, and he cannot help but wonder what could have been.[break][break]

maybe this is still salvageable. maybe she can still look past the monster everyone assumes he is and see him.[break][break]

"don't," he starts, faltering for a moment. "don't say that."[break][break]

his words are genuine but they have yet to become soft. they still remain rough and edged.[break][break]

Silence became currency between them. Spent, shared, and saved between slow, even breaths and unflinching stares.

As much as she wanted to turn back toward the exit and finally escape this hellish realm of emotional inflictions, Matias' jagged words kept her there, frozen. It felt impossible to move

"would you still be here then?"

His previous words bore into her, stronger than before. When he first asked her, the answer felt simple, with the only difficulty being the sharpness of admitting it. Now? It felt a bit more complicated.

She doesn't answer back to his call. Rather, she stilled herself against it's door frame, waiting.

Why was he like this? The answer felt like an opaque piece of artistry. Murky, yet clear enough to squint through and understand the general structure of it all.

Electricity followed his touch, tearing into her skin. It felt thrilling in a way she couldn't describe. Gently, she allowed his fingers to guide her chin upward, leading her lips back into his.
