“I am, and I sure hope you are too!” Johanna would reply. She was already dressed fancily for the occasion. “And I hope you don’t mind the audience.” A snicker escaped her before she lead the fellow Gym Leader to his entrance.

In the background they could hear the announcer riling up the Audience with such witty comments as.

“YOU KNOW HER, YOU LOVE HER. GIVE A WARM WELCOMING APPLAUSE FOR OUR DEAR JESTER QUEEN OF JOYLAND, JOHANNA JOY!”

And with that she pushed her way through the entrance walking to the battle arena waving at each and every member of the audience there.

Once she had taken her position in the trainer safety boxes. The light would dim in the arena as the announcer began once again. “AND IN THE OTHER CORNER, I AM SURE HE NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION, IT'S OUR OWN AND BELOVED RUSTBURO GYM LEADER, CIAN ‘CIANNY DAY’ MAHAR.” The spotlight would immediately shine upon the exit from which Cian was sure to emerge, ready to follow him on his way.

Johanna sighed. Was that really the best he could come up with?

Once Both trainers were in position and Pokémon summoned, Johanna summoned an Aegislash and a Dragapult as her fighters. The Announcer would continue. “Now I am sure you both know the rules. But for those in the audience that doesn’t. The Rules are simple. The battle ends once both Pokémon are knocked out or the trainer yields. First move goes to the challenger…” He pretended to be thoughtful. “Yes I do believe that is all. So without further ado, let the battle begin.”

And with that the Announcer hurried off of the stage.

the audience is not minded! what is minded, however, is how they get his name wrong.[break][break]

as the spotlight shines down on him, he quickly turns back to scold the staff.[break][break]

"my name's cian 'hoenn hotshot' maher!"[break][break]

but he's soon forced out onto the battlefield, soon to begin his gym challenge.[break][break]

"alright, then."[break][break]

it's a simple tactic, one he's used plenty of times before. his mankey leaps up onto his trevenant as the grass-type INGRAINS itself, bunkering down. mankey then sends a NIGHT SLASH from afar at the aegislash.[break][break]

It had to happen at some point. Her announcer would mess up. But the show had to go on! And so they played it along as all a part of the act.

And so the battle began. Johanna was honestly surprised at the tactic. But she wasn’t about to let it defeat her so easily.

“Dorian Defense. Ethan Offense, Flamethrower.” She quickly relegated the roles of each Pokémon.

The Aegislash quickly jumped in front of the Dragapult. KING’S SHIELD Held high as the NIGHT SLASH hit it. Once safe enough, the Dragapult would move past it’s fellow ghost and send a FLAMETHROWER toward the Trevenant hoping to bath it and everything in between in smothering flames.

FLAMETHROWER pours, spilling like a waterfall. at the same time, trevanant's body starts to flicker, causing it to simply phase through the FLAMETHROWER due to its PHANTOM FORCE.[break][break]

when the flickering stops, mankey leaps up to swipe a NIGHT SLASH at the dragapult.[break][break]

The flame engulfed the tree for a moment. But it was clear, both to the Shield and the Dragon that Trevenant somehow allowed the fire to phase through.

Aegislash drew the shield, changing from a defensive stance to an offensive one.

“Aim for the Mankey!” Johanna called out.

Aegislash was all too quick to agree. Its blade glowing with a psychic energy as it flew to meet the jumping simian. Unfortunately as it was swinging to deal a PSYCHO CUT to the Mankey, it felt the grace of a NIGHT SLASH in return.

Meanwhile Dragapult took a defensive position as it threw up a PROTECT. Aiming to use it’s own presence to protect the Aegislash from any attacks from the back.

trevenant's PHANTOM FORCE is what allows it to reappear before the mankey, taking the PSYCHO CUT in its stead.[break][break]

mankey's tail loops around one of trevenant's branches, swinging it up and hopefully over the PROTECT to bring a NIGHT SLASH back down on the dragapult.[break][break]

trevenant continues to heal through its INGRAIN.[break][break]

The Teamwork between Mankey and Trevenant was clearly formidable. Seeing how the Trevenant used its own body to protect its teammate.

It was the Chef's kiss honestly. Johanna would’ve considered just handing over the badge right then and there. But that would be to stomp upon Cian’s pride as a Gym Leader. No, he would have to work for it a bit longer.

Mankey found its way behind the PROTECT lines, Night Slash cutting down upon the Dragapult. It grimaced in pain as it would turn to its new opponent. A Blue ish aura gathered around it, accentuating its draconic features as it leaped at the Mankey in a DRAGON RUSH.

Meanwhile Aegislash clad it’s edges in a dark almost purple hue, before it swung at the Trevenant with its SHADOW CLAW.

in all honesty, cian would have taken the badge without taking any damage to his pride. he's lazy like that.[break][break]

in an odd turn of events, the mankey leaps away from the DRAGON RUSH only to take the SHADOW CLAW in trevenant's stead. it allows the ghost-type to return a SHADOW CLAW of its own, intending to drag the aegislash to the ground.[break][break]

almost down, the mankey engages in CLOSE COMBAT with the aegislash, wanting to knock it out.[break][break]

The Dragon Rush did not connect. The Mankey leapt away, only to take the Aegislash’s Shadow Claw.

The momentary distraction was enough for Trevenant to catch the Aegislash with a Shadow Claw of its own, dragging it down to the ground after having dealt considerable damage.

Then the Mankey jumped upon it ailing Close combat upon its ghostly body. Not that it touched it all that much. Still, one more attack from a typing it wasn’t immune to, and Aegislash wouldn’t be floating any further.

A moment's fright washed over the Dragapult seeing its friend being downed like this. It was quick to send a torrent of FLAMETHROWER just above the downed companion, hoping to push both opponents away from the Aegislash.

screeching, mankey attempts to secure its ASSURANCE by yanking on the aegislash, hoping to tilt it up and use it as a shield against its own teammate's FLAMETHROWER.[break][break]

trevanant is not as lucky. it is forced to deal with the full damage of the FLAMETHROWER. it groans like an old oak tree, bracing through the pain but with its last move, it slaps a SHADOW CLAW into the aegislash, intending to make sure it goes down.[break][break]

Dragapult had not foreseen what the Mankey would do, and by the time it realized the mistake it had made, it was all too late.

The Aegislash played an unwitting shield for the Mankey, protecting it from the flames of its friend and was knocked unconscious in the process.

Distracted by this mistake the Dragapult fell victim to the Shadow Claw that slammed into it, knocking to the ground and unconscious.

With both Pokémon down Johanna recalled her Pokemon to their respective Pokéballs, left the trainer area and walked her fellow Gym Leader. As she did she retrieved a small glinting badge from one of her pockets and once she got close enough, she would hand it to Cian with the words.

“You’ve won. Congratulations. This is yours now. Thank you for the battle.”
