Oh. Now Finn understood. Zev was trying to lure him into handing his glass over. Realisation dawned on his face, but he quickly regained his composure, brushing away that momentary shock as he swept his emerald fringe off his forehead.

Finn grinned gently. But what was behind that grin? Good-natured kindness, or a knowing nod that he had an inkling of what Zev was up to?

Finn dropped his stance, slinking back into his relaxed posture.

"You know where the drink stand is. Refresh yourself. I'll be here waiting."

How Zev reacted would show Finn what kind of fighter - what kind of person he was. Deception was a gem of a technique in the fighter's toolkit. But fighting wasn't fishing. You can't just wait for fish to bite; you have to sink your teeth into your prey.

Hmm. Perhaps Finn could set out bait of his own.

Finn kicked away some of the loose dirt around him and sat cross-legged on the path, setting the glass before him.

"Come on, Zev. You have to do something."

So Finnegan had seen through the deception. Well, it had been worth a shot.[break][break]

Pacing back and forth to cool down from the haphazard run, Zev watched as the other man sat and placed the drink on the ground. There was no way Finnegan was just going to let him have the glass of tea now that he knew what Zev's first plan had been.[break][break]

At least there was a lower chance of breaking the vessel or spilling its contents now.[break][break]

Having recovered for the most part, Zev walked calmly toward Finnegan and offered him a cheeky grin. "I'm good now, actually."[break][break]

And then he lunged, hands raised.[break][break]

Not for the glass.[break][break]

For Finnegan himself.

Finn observed Zev with mirth and curiosity. Like a Kecleon, he'd thrown off his fatigue and adopted an open, relaxed position. He shifted between states so fluidly it made Finn stop and wonder what laid underneath them - if there was something core at all?

And then, Zev pounced. He knocked the air out of Finn's lungs as they rolled just out of arm's reach of the glass.

Zev had Finn sandwiched between himself and the ground. With a grunt, Finn pushed upwards with his arms, trying to get on top, his muscles straining like taut cables. Zev was strong! Finn scrunched his face, sputtering air....

As his foot inched towards the glass, trying to push it away.

Two could play the feint game.

Finnegan was a master of the sword. Zev was certain that in a one-on-one duel with such an elegant weapon, adhering to sportsmanlike conduct, Finnegan would beat him ten times out of ten. But there, grappling on the dirt path, Zev had the advantage.[break][break]

He was a Mixed Martial Arts master, a former competitor who still trained in the ring several days a week. And he had committed every chokehold to muscle memory.[break][break]

Unless Finnegan had something dastardly up his sleeve, Zev would wrap his arm around Finnegan's neck, fully pressing his shoulder against the other man's jaw so he could reach around and trap one arm as well. Slipping off Finnegan, Zev would push against Finnegan's head and squeeze to cut off the blood supply to the brain.[break][break]

This was not a feint.[break][break]

Ten seconds till unconsciousness.

Finn's leg spasmed and pulled back. Zev was twisting him into some kind of pretzel, and the world was starting to dissolve around him. He pulled one arm backwards painfully, straining it against its socket, and air turned to acid in Finn's lungs.

Finn felt his life force being choked out of his body. The tables had turned, and so had the game. This wasn't chess anymore. It was war.

With his free hand, Finn pulled out a Pokeball.

A huge blast of light later, Dafutou, a Scyther, stood ferociously between the two men, warding Zev back with his razor sharp arms. Finn crawled back up, his throat sore and crushed, dragging his robe on the ground.

Still hacking and coughing, Finn pushed himself up by the knees. Pure searing anger cut through his dirt cloud of confusion.

It wasn't Finn's usual practice to go all out on a student. But when you fought with such dirt and disrespect to the master of the house, Finn wanted nothing more than to punch Zev across the jaw.

The Scyther's threatening presence was Zev's cue to quit while he was ahead. He released Finnegan from the side choke, stood, and stepped away, allowing the swordsman to gather himself.[break][break]

Instead of the calm politeness that had graced Finnegan's features throughout Zev's visit thus far, a white-hot fury distorted his expression. Zev bit back a smirk of triumph, instead plastering an apologetic smile over his own face.[break][break]

"You okay? I didn't squeeze too hard, did I?"[break][break]

Then he scooped up the glass of tea and extended it toward Finnegan as a peace offering.[break][break]

"Not broken, nothing spilled," Zev said, as if that was explanation enough for his tactics.

Air flooded Finn's pancaked lungs and fierce energy bristled across his muscles. It took quite some restraint to not land a fist in Zev's face as he offered him his glass.

Wait, his glass?

Nothing cracked, nothing spilled. Finn grimaced and pinched his forehead. Dirty was dirty, but fighting dirty worked.

Grudgingly, with a grip forced and locked by decorum, Finn accepted the unlikely quest item from Zev.

"I hate to admit it, but you are skilled. I concede defeat."

Finn bit his lip mentally. There was so much more he wanted to say if not for the fact that he was soon to be, for better or for worse, Zev's teacher.

"You will start with meditation. We meet Monday mornings in the main hall. Don't be late."

Still the mind and maybe pick up some values along the way.
