With everything that happened in the world post-meteno, there was an insane amount of work to do. The only person more devoted to Rocket than Jayden in making sure that it all got done was Cillian Quinn.

[break][break] He arrives at his mentor's office, a manila of papers in his hand. They were all transitional documents that was supposed to help them get their recruits from overseas, just things that had to be signed and pushed around so he could unlock the barriers that kept the gates between Kanto and Hoenn locked tight.

Though the knock doesn't penetrate the soundproof door, Gavin's assistant had notified him in advance of Jayden's arrival. The door swings open, the pink energy of a FAIRY LOCK dissipating from its surface.[break][break]

In the past, when visiting the underboss, Jayden might've been greeted with a smile. Now, there is only the intense PRESSURE of Lugia's looming presence and Gavin's dour expression to match.[break][break]

His anger is not directed at the admin, however.[break][break]

It's been a while since he's seen Gavin this angry. Maybe as long as the first time that he had come to Hoenn, after his parents' funeral. But that anger had been more about defensiveness and distrust, and maybe even a little bit of disappointment.

[break][break] It was quiet.

[break][break] This anger was loud and up-front, the air crackling with the tension of it.

[break][break] Not that Jayden felt any different. With all their departures - especially those of CIAN MAHER and Chu-e Choi - Jayden was feeling it. The hurt, the anger, the betrayal. It was like each step he took was filled with it, pricking small slivers in the defensive mechanism that he'd built up ever since Kanto. Ever since Ashley Shepard.

"I've known for some time. I notified Walsh and Choi," who had been his sole counterpart at the time, "and the underbosses since have access to my reports. He was given an opportunity to step aside. He did not take it."[break][break]

Even if Jayden had known what Gavin was about to say, there would have been no preparing for it. There would have been no saving himself from the momentum of the Underboss' words, dropped into the room like a bomb.

[break][break] 'In Hoenn?'

[break][break] Immediately, his chest burns. A flood of memories encompass him — thoughts of growing up with Raziel and Asriel Pryde, of coming to love and to trust him, and the way that he had been stabbed so wholeheartedly in the back when he'd learned of the other's defection. The list of defectors that would go on and on, as more and more traded their souls to the League.

[break][break] It is evidence of Jayden's upbringing that he does not immediately leap from his chair, that he doesn't find himself immediately bolting upright and attacking his mentor with questions. Instead, his fist whitens against the steel chair, eyes wide as he takes in the new information.

[break][break] Gavin had known, and not told him. Raziel had been here, and not met him. Did Asriel Pryde know? Did Raphael Pryde? Immediately, his mind flickers like a reel towards his past conversations with the two.

[break][break] And it is then that he thinks about his interactions with Raziel Beckett, with Raziel. He'd met him at HST years ago, then probably again countless times therafter. He had not even thought about it - not once. He had —

[break][break] He stands. His gaze burns — a mixture of hatred, resentment and guilt.

Though the firmness of command shapes his tone, calling him Jayden seeks to soften that blow. He understood the myriad of emotions that would be flooding through the admin at that very moment. He'd already gone through much of the same.[break][break]

"We will," he assures Jayden, "but not without a plan. You know as well as I do that Avatars are not to be taken lightly, especially those whose powers we barely understand."[break][break]

He slides a file across his desk toward Jayden.[break][break]

"This is what we know so far."[break][break]

The movements of Razz Kingsman since he'd enlisted with the Rangers. His superiors, his well-known Pokémon and scant detail of his ability to manipulate fireballs, to cause explosions.[break][break]

"We might've asked Remiel Calcifet for advice if he hadn't turned traitor himself." Gavin bares his teeth. "For now, we can only speculate the extent of his abilities, and that fact demands a careful approach."

[break][break] It is immediate. Like a leash being pulled taut, a beast relinquishing to it's master, the Admin yields to the Underboss' words. It was not what Gavin says as much as how he says it.

[break][break] Jayden's jaw locks as he picks up the folder and looks through the files. Even as he reads it all, the hatred burns in his chest at the reminder of his childhood friend who betrayed them. More than that, he hates himself for not knowing. How could he not know? He'd met Raziel Beckett before, more than once, and yet —

[break][break] "I faced him in the Hoenn Star Tournament months ago," he said, lips twisted into a frown. "And saw him in Cyberchase. And yet..." I didn't know. "He's good at disguising himself."

[break][break] Or maybe it was the burn on his face that did it for him.

[break][break] His eyes snap up to his superior.

[break][break] "I can ask lykaios athanasia on any personal Ranger reports - he's one of our rats."

[break][break] The League was not the only people who could play dirty. They'd have their own CIAN MAHER.

The ghost of a smirk betrays pleasure at mention of their rat within the Rangers, before the stoic mask of the underboss slips once more into place.[break][break]

Gavin's spies remained closer to home, their fingers on the pulse of Sootopolis City. Jayden's network was far-reaching in comparison, invaluable here.[break][break]
