How could he blame her? Given everything, how could he possibly twist her own emotions against her, questioning their very validity? Penelope stood there, jaw hanging open and shock smeared across her face.

"Why am I like this," she repeated, the echo of his own words vibrating with the disbelief they had personally spun. "Why am I? Like this?'

For the first time since their expedition, the collar of her own feelings loosened and a gasp of air was finally allowed to fill her lungs, searing them from the inside out with the sting of fresh oxygen. It was a wake-up call. To not only the way things were, but the way they'd always be.

"You know what? That's fine. You keep visiting her and pretending otherwise. This was meant to be a courtesy visit, but as always, there is no point talking to you."

She stayed there, frozen beneath his touch, letting the soft draw of his finger smooth over her skin. It does little to soothe her anger, however.

Envy is clear in her voice, in her posture, in every word she spat back out. There was no mistaking it for anything less than.
