Zev spooned well-proportioned helpings of butternut squash macaroni and cheese onto two identical plates. Spinach salad with boiled eggs, chopped bacon, cherry tomatoes, and sliced red onions filled the rest of the space.[break][break]

Grabbing two forks, Zev brought the dishes to his kitchen table, where Isaac Merlo sat. He placed one plate at his seat and the other in front of the blonde man. Salt, ground black pepper, and two bottles of salad dressing were already arranged in the middle of the table.[break][break]

"I didn't see you at the recent all-hands meeting on the submarine," Zev said as he sat down. He was speaking, of course, of Underboss Flint's and Head Scientist Sato's presentation about recent events, the Unown, and the mobile game Rondez-view of Luv.[break][break]

Zev's shiny Lycanroc padded over and put her head on his knee, gazing up at him to beg for food. Instead of feeding her, however, he merely patted her head.[break][break]

"Did you read the meeting notes that were distributed afterward?"

It was probably no secret that him and Naomi Sato got along swimmingly. "You're going crazy if you think that, man. No, no, I was there. I just figured I'd show her the respect of actually shutting my trap for once."[break][break]

There was that Tera'd-up Lechonk again.[break][break]

"It was a hell of a meeting, that's for sure. Touched on a lot of stuff I've been curious about myself." He and Zev had already discussed current events, so he had a feeling this special dinnertime invite wasn't to go back over rhose. That meant Zev wanted his input on one of the other big talking points.[break][break]

For the love of Arceus, please let it be Unown hunting Zev was asking about. He, of all people, was not someone Isaac wanted to discuss the Rondez-View of Luv with.[break][break]

He stole a quick bite of food before they started talking shop, in part to bludgeon those repressed memories with a hammer just how they deserved. "Oh, man, delicious as always," he said, silently thankful that the gods of comedic irony didn't see fit to conjure up a chicken dish today.

Isaac must have been lurking in the back of the courtyard, then, out of Zev's sight. Ultimately, it didn't matter. What mattered was that Isaac was up to speed on the topic at hand.[break][break]

Rondez-view of Luv.[break][break]

Zev speared some mac and cheese with his fork. "You brought your laptop with you today, right? Because I've been thinking — games are hosted on servers. If you could access those, could you then access the network those servers are on and break into Macro Cosmos' files?"[break][break]

The hitman had an average understanding of how computers worked, but he'd never had to hack into one before. Usually, intel handled that sort of information gathering.[break][break]

"I don't trust that company, especially after everyone's reports on their game. We need to find out what exactly they know and how they know it."

[attr="class","skullbody"]The bad news was Zev was indeed asking about the Rendez-Vous. The good news was that he wasn't asking to compare route experiences. Isaac would've literally jumped off of the nearest cliff if that was what it all came down to.[break][break]

The real bad news was that Zev was asking for the impossible here.[break][break]

"I'm flattered to be your non-lethal go-to guy and all, but. Sheesh, talk about a wall to climb." This felt like the equivalent of asking an untrained son to personally bust an advanced virus because he was "good with computers." "I mean, it's not that it's impossible, but . . ."[break][break]

Isaac pulled up the app on his phone, showing the ever-expanding number of available routes. Each time he refreshed the screen, another few dozen were tacked onto the route count. "They've got servers big enough to hold all this, and AI beefy enough to write them all in real time. We're not dealing with some rinky-dink operation here with holes big enough to drive an Alolan Exeggutor through. We're dealing with shit that'd get a practiced crackee sweating."[break][break]

"But maybe we can use that to our advantage."[break][break]

"We break into the whole system, we could bring the wrath of some rich, powerful, well-connected corps on our heads. But if we skim a little here, a little there, and stick to breaches too small for them to notice . . . well, we might just have a shot."[break][break]

He was no hacker, still. But Isaacs seemed to perform best under heinous amounts of pressure. Maybe this would end up no different.

After all, Macro Cosmos did not only make games. They were a business conglomerate with at least fourteen subsidiaries with influence on sectors from air and rail travel to television, energy, household goods, and construction.[break][break]

Zev chewed his dinner while Isaac formulated a plan out loud. After he fell silent, the hitman gestured with his fork to the bag on the floor, assuming Isaac's laptop was in there.[break][break]

[attr="class","skullbody"]Frankly, Isaac hadn't been too much of a laptop guy. The means he was used to working with pre-Rocket meant he never had access to a good one, and even after joining he usually had something else to prioritize. However, he finally relented and picked one up once investigations into the Rondez-View began in earnest.[break][break]

Good timing, considering what Zev was asking him to do.[break][break]

Luckily, he wouldn't be alone in his endeavors. What he lacked in hacking ability, Kilobyte made up for in being literally designed for it. The airwaves were his habitat. Data was his diet. Zeroes and ones made up the body that most Pokemon relied on cells for. Rotom may have been the go-to Pokemon for machines of all sorts, but for exploring the internet nothing compared to a Porygon.[break][break]

He fired up the laptop, then released Kilobyte from his Pokeball. He gave the Porygon a quick scratch under the chin. "You ready, buddy?" he asked, Kilobyte nodding before folding his body into an arrow-like configuration. He dove for the computer's access port, and before long he was in the system.[break][break]

Once that was handled, Isaac turned the laptop towards Zev. "Alright, you pick a route to give a try, and Kilobyte's gonna try and follow the data. It's my laptop, too, so the system's gonna probably think you're me. This app knows too much about the user, but there's no way it can tell the user isn't the one playing, right?"[break][break]

Arceus, Isaac hoped he was right.

Zev set aside his plate to make room for the laptop. He peered at the screen that displayed the game's main menu. Isaac must have played many more routes than Zev himself had, as the latter saw many different options unlocked — some of which were familiar faces.[break][break]

One of them was too familiar.[break][break]

"They have a route for me?" Zev asked, simultaneously bewildered and concerned. He already knew that Macro Cosmos had obtained secret knowledge about other high-ranking members of Team Rocket, but it hadn't occurred to him that they'd somehow gotten their hands on information about him.[break][break]

Using the laptop's trackpad, he moved the cursor over his image and clicked on it. The screen changed and text began to scroll across it.[break][break]

"Have you played it already?" Zev asked Isaac as he reached for his dinner again.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac's soul practically left his body the moment Zev mentioned what he'd seen. The fact that the poor man had just taken a bite of mac and cheese sure didn't help matters. He tried to hide the fact that he was practically choking on the mac and cheese, even as he paled and started tapping himself on the back.[break][break]

"Oh yeah, they have a route for everyone in Hoenn," he said the second he'd found oxygen to spare. That helped. He was able to swallow down the rest of his bite, and with it the rest of his pride. "You said it yourself. They're formidable. Real formidable."[break][break]

Just as formidable as- NOPE! NOPE, NOT THINKING ABOUT IT![break][break]

If poor Isaac wasn't already suffering, having Zev ask if he played his route pushed him into agony. He hid whatever reaction he had under a timely glass of water, the excuse of a full mouth helping him bide his time on figuring out what to say.[break][break]

"For research purposes," he finally said, the cool water coursing through his body helping him keep as cool as a cucumber. "I had to see if they were representing you properly, and how much they knew about your various internal affairs." Though if anything, it was Isaac's internal affairs the game had gone into far more detail about.[break][break]

"Bad news. They, uh. They've got the fact that you're not just a friendly neighborhood bartender figured out."

That Macro Cosmos had discovered Zev's secret identity as an assassin, despite all the effort he'd put into a completely normal, unassuming civilian persona, utterly rankled the man. He made a vexed sound around the food in his mouth as he clicked through the text of his own route.[break][break]

"I can see that."[break][break]

Then he paused as a certain set of options popped up on his screen. He blinked, stunned. Despite the scenario involving kidnapping and torture, Macro Cosmos had included a flirt option.[break][break]

Thankfully, a lifetime of learning how to control his facial expressions meant he could keep any bewilderment from revealing itself to Isaac.[break][break]

"Are you getting any good data from this? Is this even working?" Zev asked, raising his eyebrow at the other man.

THE MACRO COSMOS MATRIX

ISAAC X ZEV

A LOUD BEEP alerts the two of some progress. Some notable development. While attempting to decipher and infiltrate the materials present within the game, the Porygon encounters a hard stop.

A video plays.

Isaac Merlo would recognize them as the scientist he encountered in The Cloud: Maldacena. Their lips fall into the practiced shape of a smile, though some arrogance appears to colour its undertone.

"If you're watching this recording, congratulations! You win! Your prize? The fulfilling sensation of self-gratification." Maldacena provides paltry applause.

"There is so much you do not understand. There is so much we do not understand... and how fascinating is that? If the meteoroid had struck us, this game would never have been able to use my data. Surely you comprehend that at least?"

Abruptly, the recording stops. The Porygon can not breach any further and must evacuate.

The second the man appeared on screen, Isaac's breath hitched. "I fucking knew it," he hissed, his hands balling into fists with such force that he could feel his fingers starting to crack. "I fucking knew we hadn't seen the last of that asshole."[break][break]

However, "not the last" wouldn't last much longer. Before repelling Kilobyte with an impenetrable firewall, Maldacena bestowed the "prize" of some smarmy words and mocking applause. "Hold me back, Zev," Isaac said, gripping the edge of the table. It was as if he was trying to tether himself to reality and prevent himself from going apeshit. "Before I jump into the fucking computer and beat his ass."[break][break]

Alas, the second he came, he had already left again. The screen went black, leaving the Triad scientist's last words echoing through Isaac's mind.[break][break]

"Wait a minute . . . those assholes left us stuck with their meteor!?"

Zev had never before seen Isaac react with such vitriolic hatred. Curiosity piqued, the black-haired man picked up the laptop and held it far away from the blonde's reach.[break][break]

Isaac's Porygon then ejected itself from the computer, no longer able to proceed.[break][break]

"What are you talking about? We teleported the meteoroid away," Zev reminded Isaac as he set down the laptop back down onto the table, its screen now black. "It sounded like he's here too, in Hoenn, based on his wording: 'if the meteoroid had struck us'."[break][break]

The Rocket Beast chewed on another mouthful of pasta, turning the information over and over again in his mind, before he pointed his fork at the computer.[break][break]

"Who was that guy, anyway?" he asked.

Kilobyte popped safely out from the access port, the Porygon trailing a few curious loops around Isaac's head. He gave it a gentle scratch on the polygons for its trouble. It wasn't Kilobyte's fault that they were playing phone tag with an asshole.[break][break]

"That's Maldacena. Remember how a year ago, a bunch of us got sucked into some kinda cyberspace? Yeah. He's the guy responsible." So much had happened since that day, and yet it remained embedded in his memory. "He seemed to have some tie with the Triad. Claimed they were opposed, but I've heard some say they were related. Whatever the case, he tried wiping us out byte by byte, all while building our data into these clones."[break][break]

"Elisabeth Fiorelli and I had a feeling this had his fingerprints on it. Cryptic knowledge of things he shouldn't have access too. Weird digital clones. A whole cyberspace at his fingers. It all adds up, and that vid's the smoking gun."[break][break]

But why had the gun been fired in the first place?[break][break]

"I figured he was just taunting us," Isaac admitted. "Meant him and the Triad when he said "us", and all this divine judgment crud was just to cover their asses over pulling the same stunt Dahlia did on Sea Hoenn. But you might be onto something. He couldn't let his own judgment be clouded by grudges.[break][break]

"If he's here, he might be telling the truth on being on the outs with the Triad. But why he tormented us, and what this app has to do with anything, beats me . . ." A thought came to mind. He still remembered where the entrance to Cyberspace had been. He'd never forget that sandbar where he almost surrendered his life.[break][break]

Perhaps there was only one real way to find out.

Ah, the Cloud incident. That happened before Zev's increased interest in Team Rocket's operations. He'd skimmed reports about it but hadn't felt, at the time, that it was relevant to his goals. Now he considered rereading them, and more closely.[break][break]

"I noticed some of the routes in the game were about the DRK Triad, too," Zev said. "I doubt they, like us, would allow Macro Cosmos to use their information willingly. And if Maldacena opposes them like you say, then maybe he's being truthful after all."[break][break]

But Zev knew better than to trust anybody, least of all someone who blocked their access to the server data.[break][break]

"Did your Porygon manage to obtain a copy of that video? Our IT people might be able to analyze it for data."
