THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

The trek through the sweltering forest was beyond uncomfortable. Humidity soaked Callan to his skin, and the heat of the jungle multiplied under the inability to sweat. Unfortuantely, the presence of a Celesteela meant that the situation needed to be dealt with before it reached civilization.

His OBSTAGOON's NIGHT SLASH cleared a thicket path going forward, the bamboo shoots were claustrophobically knit together. "This way." Were it not for the fact that he had a known Rocket Associate currently under supervision with him, he'd feel a lot more comfortable with the group.

it had been easier said than done to secure his place on an expeditionary team. blood money goes a long way with keeping your name off of public records, but ever since the attack on his cargo ship and the consequent loss of his livelihood, nikkari has been nothing short of careful.

so it's under the guise of ansel goodwin that he travels with these companions. papers aren't usually so difficult to forge, but without his resources, it's been a pain.

he's here for several reasons. first: to see with his own eyes the existence of these other universes that so casually bisect their own. second: to find one Remiel Calcifet .

following the news, he had been shocked to discover his once-ally had become a turncoat. of course, he knows nothing of this arm of rocket's recent orders to destroy the man on sight. so his eyes gleam at the man's back as they walk.

alecto clings to his own back, sapphire eyes refracting the muted yellow light that dapples over them. their trek through the forest is burdensome; sweat sticks to the nape of his neck, beads at his lip. he gathers his hair up in a bun and frowns at the discomfort.

"have you been here before, callan?" he calls to the elite four member.

This wasn't Remiel's first venture into the realm known as the ULTRA CRATER. Far from it, in fact. It was partly for this reason, he supposed, that he'd been placed into this expedition group. Though his participation here came with a condition: the Elite Four member Callan Young would be present throughout to monitor his participation closely.

The exiled prince harbored no personal grudge or ill-will towards the individual. Except for being a former Team Rocket Admin, he could not imagine any other reason why he was receiving the occasional sharp glare and cold shoulder. Nonetheless, he would not allow such treatment to impede him from proving his worth to this expedition— and, by extension, the League that had begrudgingly taken him in.

"We'd best exit this jungle as quickly as possible." Remiel remarks, walking between his two companions as they cut a trail through. "I encountered a GIANT CENTISKORCH in another just nearby... and, as astounding as that encounter was, I do not wish to repeat it." Slowing to a stop, he reaches down to his belt for a Luxury Ball and nods. "I'll have OTHNIEL scout the best route for us." He adds, summoning an AERODACTYL shortly thereafter and giving it instruction.

As the ancient Pokémon flies off, Remiel grows quiet to allow nikkari hect a chance to ask his question and get a response. In the meantime, however, he begins to take notice of strange noises in the bushes... surely just the wind, right?

"That would depend on the situation, Ansel." Callan grins, turning briefly back towards his two compatriots. "If referring to being in an uncomfortable situation with men of predatory natures, yes." The Elite Four gives a small, compensatory chuckle. "If referring to this sweaty hellhole, no. Why do you ask?"

It was the wrong thing to say, of course. But looking back at his companions for this expedition, Callan could not curb his personal thoughts. This was his own flaw, and he knew this. He knew this and he said it regardless. The impulsivity, the judgmentalism, the immediate assumption that his personal gut instinct was correct: These things in which he accused Josh Devlin of, also rang true for him.

He guarded against it, he attempted to keep an open mind. But it still slipped on occasion. It was in the eyes for all three of them. The lifelessness, the farsightedness, the shadows that danced in between the pupils of red, blue and yellow in this expedition, that Callan could not shake. Some would call this gut instinct, some would call this paranoia. Callan called it judgmentalism.

His mind needed certainty and control. And though it caused him to occasionally side glance at Remiel Calcifet with some degree of suspicion, ultimately it was something he applied to everyone, and everything around him. To hide his lack of calm with barely veiled words, this was no mark of a leader, or representative of the League.

And yet, here he was.

He had no clue if dahlia goode had mentioned to Ansel of the unique situation regarding this mission. But he doubted that he'd get very far with 'assessing' Prince Remiel if he had just kept quiet the entire expedition.

The idea was laughable. At the end of the day, Remiel would receive special treatment, given his status as a member of the upper echelons of Galarian society. It was the same with FERNANDO SILPH and MATIAS SILPH.

Limited consequences, lack of accountability, clear violations in conflicts of interest, swept under the rug for the sake of maintaining a delicate balance. Callan did not envy her position.

He doubted that the League or Dahlia would ever actually do anything to the man, given his status as heir apparent to the throne. A throne in which currently was under siege, but regardless.

He only wished that the same treatment had been given to Adrian Malcolm. The resentment grew inside of him, and it made him spit it out, even if confidentiality was going to be an issue: "I'm curious, Prince Remiel, how does a member of the Galarian Royalty end up in one of the highest echelons of Rocket leadership?"

CALLAN YOUNG must explore one of his vices/insecurities, OR exercise his immense prowess in battle.

a giant centiskorch? other than the rifts themselves, nikkari's yet to witness something truly terrible in hoenn. its struggles have paled in comparison to what he's witnessed in galar; granted, he's only been here less than a week. with the news outlets, he'd assumed the region was close to crumbling at every hour.

nikkari stumbles at the elite four member's words. his supposed shock is for the effect of both sides; let remiel think this information a surprise, and let callan see him as he wishes: a frightened nobody caught in the middle of the wrong war.

alecto chitters happily at the uncomfortable presence and reaches up to swat at a low-hanging branch. his hand nearly brushes the galarian prince's, but he draws back. if the falling in step had been coincidental, nikkari doesn't take the bait.

with the venom in the elite four member's words, he opts not to take his chances out here against such a foe. better to bide his time. he does still look curiously at the ex-admin, patiently waiting for the answer.

Remiel simply raises a brow at the response given by his temporary overseer. Callan Young is not amenable to the situation at hand, that much is clear. And, frankly, the royal understands.

Given the fairly recent revelation about Adrian Malcolm that had been made public, he supposed the Elite Four member was facing a sort of turmoil in his life he hadn't quite faced before. Though his first instinct was to defend himself against this perceived attack, however, the royal takes a deep breath instead and sighs. Comprehending the circumstances behind the man and the naturally stressful nature of this expedition helped stay his tongue.

"By choice, of course," He eventually responds, expertly swinging his machete through a curtain of thick vines so he may pass through. "One that I hope to atone for."

Suddenly, his Aerodactyl's SUPERSONIC screech in the skies above alerts them to its discovery: the OUTSKIRTS outside of the jungle. It flies above them in circles in an effort to group them up before guiding them toward it. "It seems Othniel has located a suitable place for us to rest." He says, guiding them in its direction. Though, not long afterward, Remiel comes to a stop when he finds a strange mound.

There are, in fact, many of them scattered throughout the jungle ahead. In addition, the prince spots several holes that appear to be tunnel entrances hidden amongst the flora. He points out one of the former with his machete. "Durant, perhaps?" He suggests, not daring to admit they look eerily similar to the top of CELESTEELA heads just yet.

Callan laughs, uncharacteristically, as Remiel replies with his short response. "If you really want to atone Remiel, drop yourself off at Sootopolis and let the Rockets eat you alive. You're not here because you want to atone for your actions, you're here to escape them." He briefly turns around and clicks his teeth, a sardonic grin spreads across his face.

Wherever the conversation was headed, the screech of his Aerodactyl made short work of it. Throwing unnecessary jabs with the former Rocket would have to wait as they finally have a more concrete direction.

Callan stops briefly after Remiel stops walking. A clearing in the jungle, not a large one, but enough for it to be noticeable between the thickets and the trees. Small mounds litter the floor in ashen spikes, Callan instinctively reaches for his Ultra Ball. This was not a place where Durant nested, "No, Durant don't live in such climates, they stay in heated locations and work in groups nearby mineral and metallic veins." Callan began, at the very least, being a Ranger meant he was able to understand Pokemon environments far better than the average person. He didn't know what this was, but his gut told him well enough: "This is a nesting spot, we need to lea--"

Too late, it seemed.

No sooner had they begun to exchange words that whatever had been under the ground began to vibrate. Starting with one, a violent buzzing as the ground began to rattle, before another mound joined in. And another, and another, until the ground rattled into an EARTHQUAKE as the mounds of infant CELESTEELA exploded from the earth.

And the ground caved into a massive, cavernous pit underneath. The three of them fell. Dropping into a pitch black, endless abyss.

"Shit!" He growls. Ultra Ball already in hand, Callan tosses out his Gardevoir. "PSYCHIC!"

The flow of gravity halts around the three of them (and Alecto), as Callan's heart pumps from the rush of the fall, the Gardevoir gradually lowers all three of them down into the bottomless pit. It's nice and cold, the smell of earth and rock is everywhere, and as the three land onto a hard surface, a flow of running water covers their ankles. "Good work, Eurea." Callan replies. "We need some light, can you create some?"

While pitch black, a spruce of bright purple flame lights up in between Gardevoir's palms, gradually lifting into the air to form the shape of a chandelier, illuminating the pitch black. In the midst of the purple light, dozens of child Celesteela. In the midst of the cave, a large Celesteela, injured, though still seemingly prepared for battle. "I was wrong, this was not a nesting ground." Callan remarked, as the large Celesteela began to encroached them, its hands poised to fire a FLASH CANNON. "We fell into their hunting trap." In other words, they were food.

the cold grasp of realization grips his spine. the crowned prince's defection is treason, but that is not what perplexes nikkari the most. the ex-admin could just be saving face, of course, but it certainly sits wrong if he believes he's put himself on a path to atonement.

he's spent time scouring news articles, hungrily consuming local gossip and the general well-being of hoenn's citizens. favor with the league has improved drastically following the events of the meteor; how could they not be pleased to be free of their prison?

the ground vibrates beneath them and his musings bleed into critical thinking. his hand goes immediately for palamedes' ball as they're swallowed by the earth, but callan saves their party before things turn dire. alecto cackles humorously as they're gently lowered to the ground, and then she grins with her glinting teeth.

her furred gremlin hands clap together joyously and nikkari grimaces. the sudden light makes him wince. callan doesn't need to explain the situation; nikkari already fears the worst by the sound of his little monster's glimmering cackles.

the mother (queen?) celesteela's twiglike neck shines wetly against the purple glow. it raises a floating spire and a screeching shakes nikkari's bones as the rest of the infants follow suit. panicking won't do them any good.

alecto knows what she's meant to do as soon as nikkari reaches for two more pokeballs.

"hold them," he orders as the murkrow perches on his shoulder and crown stands nervously in front of him. all three oblige by their trainer's call and a handful of the smaller celesteela freeze in waves, but it's abundantly clear this won't buy them much time.

"do you see a way out?"

Tch.

Callan Young does not let up. Whether these were his true feelings on the matter, however, or simply well-curated bait to stoke the flame within Remiel's heart, the prince chose not to give in. The mild annoyance that permeated his expression briefly is quick to dissipate as he sighs. "You're wrong, Callan."

Even if his Aerodactyl hadn't interrupted their conversation, the royal didn't care to get into the specifics any further. Not here; not now. This was a debate they could have later if the chance ever presented itself again. Furthermore, it seemed terribly impolite to have it with Mr. Ansel Goodwin on the sidelines. The man had no involvement, after all.

Nevertheless, fate steps in to forcefully unite their attention on survival once more. The trio find themselves trapped in a pit before long, and nikkari hect holds the Celesteela present in stasis long enough for Remiel to spot something nearby:

Shiny Kartana (Beast Boost): Air Slash, Detect, Synthesis, Vacuum Wave, Leaf Blade, Psycho Cut

Water-logged and slightly torn, a KARTANA crawls out of the water in a feeble attempt to try and dry itself on a rock. The royal cautiously approaches it... but it makes no attempt to flee or even attack him as the others had. In fact, it uses the last of its strength to leap off from its platform and slap itself against his shoulder. There it clung as if pleading for the man to take him out of this wretched cave and rescue it.

Offended by this, however, the Celesteela within the den suddenly delve into an uncontrollable fury. And so their hive mind decides to bury these interlopers and the Kartana that wishes to go along with one of them. When a massive earthquake strikes, followed by the sound of an approaching eruption, Remiel swiftly produces an empty Luxury Ball before tapping it against the origami creature on his shoulder.

Thankfully, his Aerodactyl reaches them shortly thereafter, having dove down from the sky above at the first sign of trouble. Though Remiel is the first to mount his prehistoric beast, he extends a gloved hand down to whichever man will take it first. "Let's be off! We haven't much time!"

Callan doesn't take long to accept the situation as is. An Imprison comes out to lock the Celesteela away, a Kartana,injured, moves to hold itself against Remiel, who summarily catches it.

"Upwards it is." Callan remarked, tossing out his own Pokeball, sending out Bowie, his Toxtricity, as they climb onto Remiel's Aerodactyl. As the Celesteela continues to throw a tantrum like earthquake, Callan decides to help them out. He tosses out his TERA ORB, transforming Bowie into the NORMAL TYPE, as they fly outwards, Bowie BOOMBURSTsdownwards, creating an im[plosion of force the seals the underground behind them.

"I'd say we should head back, the Kartana you caught seems to need urgent medical attention, outside of revives and potions." Callan remarked. "We'll need to backtrack our way out of the rift."

Use terastalization in a pivotal way.

nikkari does not need to be told twice. crown winces under the psychic duress. her front leg buckles as the celesteela struggle against their invisible bonds. harrow similarly furrows her claws in nikkari's shoulder, drawing blood. he snatches up his vulpix and mounts the aerodactyl swiftly, hand poised over crown's pokeball.

they explode upward and nikkari's stomach churns. alecto squeals with delight and harrow shudders into the crook of his neck, making herself small so she's not thrown back down into the pit.

the effect of their broken concentration is apparent and swift. the celesteela surge upward with alien screeches. callan's toxtricity delivers a startlingly powerful blow into the earth. he says something to the prince, but nikkari doesn't hear it. he's too busy straining his eyes at the rapidly receding ground.

at the malformed bumps rising from the earth.

"harrow," he says, quickly exchanging his vulpix' ball for another. the eevee is a cross bundle of fur in his arms, but she stops struggling when she realizes they're several hundred feet in the air. harrowhark has taken flight beside them, small wings struggling to keep pace with the dinosaur they ride upon.

still, with every flap of her wings, she exudes a billowing cloud. a haze trails behind them. the eevee realizes quickly why she'd been released and copies her avian partner, shaking her own curling mist from her adaptable fur.

"these clouds will spread and give us some cover. can you get us down to the treeline?"

alecto wrings her spindly fingers together and cackles. "she left a trail of power gems. get her close enough and they'll light the way."

Remiel nods in agreement with Callan Young as the large Aerodactyl they mount swiftly elevates them out from the pit. Hues of cobalt-blue briefly gleam with the light of TERASTALLIZATION before he acknowledges the Elite Four's statement further. "Seconded. I think we've certainly overstayed our welcome in this realm..."

Just as he began to worry about a Celesteela launching straight into them, however, Ansel Goodwin's Pokémon began to provide them with HAZY cover. And, if that wasn't enough, a trail of POWER GEMS illuminated a safe flight path for his prehistoric dinosaur to follow. Impressed, Remiel heeds the man's instructions and steers them accordingly.

"Not bad, Mr. Goodwin. Not bad at all," He remarks, turning over his shoulder to regard the man. "I trust this isn't your first dangerous expedition into uncharted territory?" The tactics employed seemed familiar...

The use of Power Gem to create a pathway back to where they had previously travelled was a nice touch as they begin to return home. The rift comes into site, with the haze of the two Pokemon shielding away any potential attackers.

Once they return to the destroyed remnants of Fortree City-- part of it at least, Callan hops off of Alecto and regards his two partners. "I'll report to the Commissioner that you have been instrumental in the success of this mission. I suppose this ends your trial period, under my 'supervision', at least." Callan says to Remiel Calcifet, before turning to nikkari hect. "Yeah, great work Ansel."

"Let's disband."
