the mist feels like a labyrinth she can't escape from. sounds whisper to her from all directions, begging her to change her route, but she stays on a straight course towards where she thinks the scatterbang sound came from.[break][break] it feels futile until it isn't.

she practically runs into ollie morales again in her haste to find him. she blinks up at him, sees her own uncertainty reflected back at her, and reaches out to grab him by his arms, to see if her fingers find purchase this time.

her fingers curl over solid skin, but a glance at the feathers embedded in his arms make her wary of him. she looks back up at his face, at the blood, at the way it turns back into interdream mist as he wipes it away. she lets go of him like he burned her, drawing her hands back to her body. "i — i don't even know where i was. i got lost in the mist and i thought i found you but it wasn't really you."

she doesn't share his laugh, watching his expression intently for a trick of the mist, for any evidence that he might start to look like Eva Morales or worse.

"rockets?" she echoes, face falling as she follows his gaze to the lifeless applin. her voice is thick with sympathy as she croons out a quiet, "oh ollie."

she looks past him at the cargo, at the grounding presence of her altaria near the bags of supplies. she has to be real, she thinks, glancing between the dragon-type and ollie morales .

"good job, ollie," she praises, but it rings hollow in the wake of everything. "i'm really sorry i wasn't there."

the dead-eyed look of contempt his sister had given her comes to the forefront of her mind then, but she shoves it to the back of her mind. she would rather forget the ugly details of what she encountered in the mist, so she doesn't say anything more about it.

ollie morales steps forward to hug her and it feels warm and sturdy and real. her breath sighs out between her teeth as he tightens his grasp. she relishes the moment for as long as it lasts, but the next time he speaks, it settles a heavy weight of seriousness across her shoulders.

she thinks back to their letters, to their conversations, then shakes her head.

[break][break] "it was cancer, i think. i was only five, i can't remember that well." he stares ahead, at the rocky outcroppings that begin into morph into shapes of kanto. to pallet town. the image of a blond woman hugging a blond boy, twirling him in the air. "she was my ma - tough as nails, but gentle too."

[break][break] "she knew everything there was to know."

[break][break] just like Eva Morales.

[break][break] "the mist-version of her was exactly like her. it was almost too real."

[break][break] "it was nice, at first. she told me - all the things i wanted to hear." chase after her, you love her. and she loves you. "but then it was awful. she turned mean and vengeful - told me i should've never left kanto. that i'd abandoned pa and eva and everyone."

[break][break] "it was a lie, i know that much, but i don't know what part of it was a lie - and what was... real."

annalise listens quietly, nodding where appropriate. she puts her hand over his as he starts to describe the mist version of his mother, thumb stroking the back of his hand as gentle comfort as his encounter turns uglier than hers had. the interdream zone is cruel, she thinks, her gaze soft and sympathetic.

"it was all just a hallucination, ollie. i think your real mom would've said all the nice things you heard, but the mist was definitely trying to get a rise out of you with everything else. i think it feeds off emotions, good and bad."

"you're not the reason your mom passed," she reassures quietly. "and you didn't abandon anyone. you did what was best for you — that's all your mom would've wanted, i think."
