Even before he says it, she already knows the answer.

Survive.

It feels like that’s all she’s been doing the last month. Between MATIAS SILPH, Kanto, and now Hoenn’s Rocket, she’s been attacked emotionally, mentally, and physically. Her body feels like it’s in a constant state of fight or flight with adrenaline persistently being squeezed out of her adrenal glands at an alarming rate.

Fernando’s right. One day, it would be too much, and she’d be forced into submission from pure fatigue.

The options presented are far from ideal. They sound like the opposite of solutions. Drinking would leave her tired and vulnerable. Smoking was a bad habit. Finding comfort in others seems to be the most reasonable but there is only one person that could fill that void.

“Work is a nice distraction,” she decides. She may as well be productive.

for a moment, he swears he sees something. his legs tense. his toes curl and his heel digs into the ground. but nothing happens. the darkness of GRANITE CAVE’s depth provide nothings but feelings. an uneasy nervousness that eats away at his own over cautiousness.

“that is my preference as well.”

his eye narrows. the coast is still clear but he can’t help but feel his hand stray closer to his pokeball.

a moment passes and his stance relaxes.

A palpable tension ripples across him and his paranoia extends to her. They’re in the eye of the storm, a temporary peaceful center while the war for Hoenn’s stability wages around them. She feels a sense of fear creep into her core. Is she doing enough to ensure its survival?

Her own cautious gaze joins his in tracing the darkness. There’s too much uncertainty beyond their oasis of light. When he relaxes, she remains tense for no particular reason.

“Yes?” she responds to call of her name and glances back over towards him.

he holds his silence like a precious gem. quick to cling. avaricious well until the novelty wears off. and even then, he holds. persistent.

persevering.

the dull croon of their communication comes back alive. several familiar voices announce that they’re okay. their routine check-in is accounted for and their respite continues just a little longer.

“…”

fernando continues to avoid eye contact. in fact, his eye is closed.

“not many people understand what you’ve been through. they will extend their sympathies but they never truly understand. not until they live what we’ve been through.”

she can see the wrinkles of his frown even when he’s facing away from her. it bleeds into the canvas of his cheek bones. clenched in annoyance.

“you are not alone. eventually, it gets better.”

Again, she finds no comfort in the silence. In fact, it’s so painful that she breaks it first, but not with words. She shifts, her boots sliding against the rocky terrain of the cave while she turns to examine the other sharp border of darkness trying to intrude on their light.

A renewed relief comes with the crackle of voices. She listens eagerly to their report. A releasing sigh drips past her lips that finally releases the tension from her shoulders.

Her respite is short lived. The tension comes crawling back as Fernando speaks. This time, it settles in her gut and twists like a knife. A nausea rises into her throat where it tightens at the reminder of her loss.

This time, she’s happy to let the silence consume them. She’s not quite sure what to say. She’s indecisive at a pivotal crossroads. He’s extending her sympathies and a chance to shift this into something more personal which is a road she’s never been offered. It might be comforting to speak with someone who understands – though she’s not quite sure what his loss was. She could find out. She could tell him he’s wrong and that she is alone and divulge her insecurities.

Or, she could just keep things the same, how they’ve always been and not derail one of the most stable relationships with a colleague she’s had since becoming Head Professor. She’s not ready for more change, not yet.

“Thanks,” she eventually replies, grateful he wasn’t trying to be one of those that was offering sympathies. It does little to conceal a fresh vulnerability she now feels in his presence. So she turns, diverting her gaze and offering him just a silhouette, “I know it will," she lies, her hope has been oppressed by the constant barrage of attacks, "I just wish it would happen faster.”

he’s about to divulge further but his sentence is cut off by an abrupt tear. the same corridor that had spooked him earlier now comes alive with an ULTRA SEA portal. dimension twists and the all too familiar slit in space time welcome all who wish to partake.

“…”

a pokeball sits in the palm of his hand. by now, they’re familiar that whoever comes out is just as likely a friend as it is a foe. it requires their utmost vigilance.

but what comes out of the portal is neither people or pokemon. just a slow crawling mist of star struck purple.

Too easy, yes. Nothing is allowed to be easy. The fires of hell forged powerful souls – if they were able to make it out alive. Therein lies the truth he spoke not too long ago: perseverance.

It’s bound to happen sooner or later. Their oasis of peace would be torn away by a too familiar event. The sound is sharp and distinguishable, like the screech of nails down the front of a chalkboard. It rakes down her spine with vicious claws but instead of pain it leaves goosebumps.

Tension settles in like a taught string. With gentle coaxing it would snap. In the new silence, a pokeball unlatches from her belt, held firmly between her fingers as her concentration lingers on the void into ULTRASPACE.

She expects a person: friend or foe. Instead, they get something far worse.

The poisonous mist leaks into their world. Eva recoils from it like a foul odor, her eyes wide in fear and disbelief. Not this again. Not the INTERDREAM ZONE.

The panic she exudes is palpable. In an act of desperation, her palms push forward. Gold crackles across her emerald irises as a gust of DELTA WIND rushes through the cavern. The mist stirs, but its ethereal composition is resistant to her attempt to drive it back.

HAD THIS BEEN ANY OTHER MIST, the DELTA WIND would have whipped it into submission. but dreams cannot be whisked away by physical demands. no, dreams transcend the will of others. spawned from imagination, beholding only to the limits of another ambitions, dreams are the most invasive of all.

to struggle is to dream.

to survive is to dream.

“morales!”

a pair of red eyes glow from the great beyond.

fernando’s comfey materializes around his wrist. his other hand holds a loose SCATTERBANG which he tosses into the INTERDREAM MIST. the sudden boom is alarming but doesn’t scare the pokemon off. instead, two more sets of eyes appear.

they cannot scare off IRON JUGULIS.

Eva should have known better. She tried the same trick in the thick of it and it didn’t work. It was desperation that drove her to act without thinking, and it would likely drive that same primal response again. This mist gave her subconscious a voice, a voice that tore her apart from the inside out.

Nightmares are still dreams, after all.

His voice cracks the thin shell of focus she had for her own fears, “I see it,” the pokeball in her hand cracks open. The crimson light arcs through the mist like lightning.

Two eyes.

No, four.

A familiar Gardevoir materializes amongst the swirls of pink. Eva continues to step back, shuffling herself just outside of the mist’s reach. But this mist has a mind of its own. Like a parasite it reaches forward with its tendrils, gravitating towards whatever it can feed off. She has a lot to easily offer on the surface.

The SCATTERBANG falls short. It was a good idea, but these pokemon were like nothing she had ever seen. A flash wasn’t going to scare it off.

Fear fuels instinct. Her new instincts are molded by Rayquaza. The gold in her irises flares bright as an energy melts away from her core to be absorbed by the Gardevoir. In a flash of light she mega evolves.

The IRON JUGULIS’s DARK PULSE clashes with a brilliant DAZZLING GLEAM from the wave of the Gardevoir’s arm. The opposing energies hiss violently on contact, white wisps of displaced matter mingling with the pink.

A PROTECTIVE BARRIER SHIELDS HIM FROM THE BLAST’S AFTERMATH. it glimmers green for a moment before shattering into a million pieces. smoke and dust blind his vision but his voice still rings clear.

“we can’t waste our stamina here.”

together, he has no doubt eva and him can handle this threat. worst case scenario, they lose a few pokemon. but with rocket scurrying around like rats, they can’t afford to lose valuable resources without extracting anything in exchange.

“we force it back.”

fernando taps another pokeball and his steelix rattles the entire cave. it dives into the ground, tunneling out of sight, as its trainer waits for the oppportune moment.

Stamina? Her thoughts don’t even register the importance of their diligence in this moment. What lies beyond this and the remainder of this long, arduous night is obscured like the Iron Jugulis in the residual smoke of the SCATETERBOMB.

Adrenaline pumps through her veins, the focus is fight or flight, it is survival in the moment. Tendrils of pink snake up her legs. A sharp inhale hisses between her teeth. The panic is hidden behind the smoke which she is grateful for. Her wild eyes scan the darkness for the nightmare that is inevitably coming for her.

Force it back, force the portal closed. If only it was that simple. The ground beneath them cracks with the power o the Steelix as it dives beneath the surface. The Gardevoir’s TELEPATHY registers the presence of her ally. Together they would dispose of the unnatural presence creeping through the portal.

A foreign, mechanical cry screeches from the pokemon open maw. A horrible, paralyzing HYPER VOICE that rattles the Mega Gardevoir enough to make it falter. She has no choice but to let the MAGICAL LEAVES shot forward, knowing they would fly true and find their mark.

NUMEROUS VINES SPROUT UP BEYOND THEIR FIELD OF VISION. the comfey’s GRASS KNOT looks to bind and reverse the pokemon’s own size against it. likewise, MAGICAL LEAVES disappear into the darkness but the unmistakable sound of contact clinks one after another.

a sound that strictly metallic.

“i’ll support you! when the steelix gives you an opening, we push it all the way back!”

the ground above them starts to rumble but no other signs allude to what’s to come. however, her GALADE’s TELEPATHY can sense the STEELIX’s lying in wait. what it’s waiting for, becomes uncertain, but fernando’s palm boasts a small, shiny jewel orb.

the darkness gives way when one of the IRON JUGULIS heads spews a broad FLAMETHROWER. the GRASS KNOTS strewn across its surface start to crumble as they’re burnt to a crisp.

Fear feeds further into paranoia. It latches on like a greedy parasite. The insecurity and grief call to it and it lines up for the feast. She groans beneath the heavy weight of her self-loathing and collapses into the prison built with her own hands.

This time it’s not MATIAS SILPH’s voice, nor PENELOPE LIVY’s, but her own as a soft whisper. It’s so seared into her soul that by now all she needs are gentle reminders.

Just a single word, a single person can break her.

The presence in her chest hums in defiance. It rattles her soul in attempt to shake off such foul feelings. This is the first time she hasn’t worn in Sygna Suit in the presence of the mist. Her patron offers a modicum of strength to cling to, so she does.

The sharp chime of metal, she’s seen this before. She’s fought this before, “Adele,” bright fire pours from a smaller head. The hiss of burning grass proceeds the sharp scrape of metal as it moves forward yet again, “Again!” another flash of fey energy spurts from her palms, blinding the anomaly into a stunned daze.

DELTA WINDS rise to roar. The cavern not only creaks with the impending assault of the Steelix, but of the gales that spring from her fingertips. Her eyes shine bright, piercing through darkness and smoke and mist. The INTERDREAM ZONE may be unshakable, but the physical bulk of the Iron Jugulis is not. The tempest surges forward with unmatched force, an accumulation of grief, and fear, and hate.

Just imagine what she could do with hope, and love, and peace.

from above, the STEELIX breaks onto the scene with its open maw. the entire length of its body glows with a burst of PRIMAL ENERGY. fernando’s STEELIXITE shines brighter and brighter, erupting from the confines of his enclosed fist.

the MEGA EVOLUTION finishes just as the pokemon lands at the IRON JUGILIS’ flank. eva’s great tempest buffets both of them but it cannot stop the MEGA STEELIX from unleashing its attack. an empowered LIGHT OF RUIN is already half channeled but the sudden influx of PRIMAL ENERGY brings out the raw intensity of its life force.

LIGHT OF RUIN becomes RUINOUS BLOOMS IN MOONLIGHT.

a devastating beam of light is unleashed on the battlefield before leaving lingering energy. the user is empowered immensely, but becomes confused.

IRON JUGILIS’ central head rears around to meet it head on. a HYPER BEAM manifests in the pit of its throat but the surprise attack catches it off guard. there’s no time to counter and it’s caught in the blast near point blank.
