Hideo was finding he much preferred going through the Mechanical Kingdom than the Ultra Deep Sea; there, he got to explore a massive kingdom at his own pace, working alongside others as they tried to uncover just what happened there. Here, he was lost in a massive, dank cave with only his Pokemon by his side, with no clue how to get out.

And there were Rocket here, none happy to see him. One even saw fit to try and detain him, which he was less than thrilled about. Hideo didn't pay much attention to the woman rambling about how "you aren't supposed to be here" when she was trying to grab him.

It didn't take long for Hideo's Meowscarada to step in, and a Pokemon battle followed soon after. One his Meowscarada handled pretty well, the Rocket's Grapploct on its last legs (tentacles?). It wasn't a quiet battle, considering how theatrical his Pokemon was doing this.

But at least once this battle was over, he could keep headed in this direction. He had to find his way out eventually…right?

Gavin's local comms crackle softly in his ear as he comes within range of a frustrated, desperate plea.[break][break]

"... need backup! Anyone?"[break][break]

Gavin does not respond in words. He closes off his communications, instead, and turns in the direction from whence the call had come. Straining his ears, the faint sounds of battle can be heard echoing from the mouth of a living cave.[break][break]

While far from eager to enter any more organic cave systems after his last experience, Rocket always comes first.[break][break]

DARK SPIKES scatter across the battlefield.[break][break]

"Sir!"[break][break]

Surprise colours the grunt's tone as Gavin comes into view, shrouded by his SHADOW MIASMA.[break][break]

"Go," he commands. "I'll handle this."[break][break]

The grunt scrambles off with her Grapploct in tow as Gavin's Roserade blooms onto the scene. The other combatant looked like a child, but that child had stumbled onto the field of battle and gotten in Rocket's way. Time to teach them a painful lesson.

Hideo could hear something scatter across the ground around him and his Meowscarada. Spikes? Toxic Spikes? Was a Grapploct even able to use those? He'd have an easier time knowing if one of his Psychic Pokemon were out, but the only one he had was Uxie, and he wasn't keen on showing it off to Rocket anytime soon.

He received the answer to his last question quickly: someone else was here. Seemed the grunt's pleas were answered. Hideo grumbled, unhappy that he had another person to deal with. Rocket really liked to be jerks, didn't they?

"You guys really like getting in people's way, don't you?" he sighed. He didn't know what kind of Pokemon this guy was using, but he was confident his Meowscarada would choose her attacks properly. "Meowser, you know what to do. Choose a good type, alright?"

The Meowscarada nodded, moving in fast towards the Roserade, charing in with a Quick Attack. The "mask" on her face adopted a white color - matching her new typing courtesy of her Protean skills.

A rare ability, but one Gavin was familiar with on account of his Greninja. Thankfully, his Roserade is merely an entrée for the battle to come. Her stem bends beneath the QUICK ATTACK before she's swallowed in a swirl of shadow.[break][break]

In her place, a fungal boxer emerges with fists raised in challenge.[break][break]

Strangely, while the DARK SPIKES should poison the Breloom, no sign of the condition takes hold.[break][break]

"I would argue it's a matter of perspective, child. You are meddling in our business, after all."[break][break]

Gavin's distinct voice, rich and deep with the gravel of a smoker, would perhaps be familiar to anyone who'd seen (or in Hideo's case, heard) the footage leaked to HNN that had compromised the Rocket's identity.[break][break]

The guy's voice was vaguely familiar to Hideo - perhaps he heard it in a video once, maybe he heard it in person during the Hoenn Star Tournament. But he didn't recall who it was supposed to belong to.

Though he was certain it belonged to a Rocket member, judging by how the guy was speaking.

"Well, gee, I'd love to just get on out of here," Hideo groaned, "But everywhere I go, some Rocket's there to give me trouble! Just like you!"

Hideo could hear the guy switch out his Pokemon for another, though at this point, he didn't care what Pokemon the guy was putting in his way this time. He'd just fight past whatever this guy had, then go on through; he wasn't going to get detained like that last Rocket tried to do.

His Meowscarada merely shrugged at the change of Pokemon (and lack of harm from the spikes), opting to continue with her trainer's order to battle. She'd make a quick slash at the Breloom, her mask turning bright green as she leapt back immediately after her attempt, U-turning away from her foe. She'd stay on the field, gracefully avoiding the spikes laid around the arena, playfully waiting for her opponent's response.

But could Hideo trust the word of a Rocket?[break][break]

While Hideo himself wouldn't see it, perhaps the Meowscarada would notice how little the U-TURN seems to impact the Breloom, almost as if it were RESISTANT to the attack.[break][break]

Gavin clicks his tongue in a peculiar way.[break][break]

In response, the Breloom sucks back the TOXIC drool that had been dripping from its open mouth. CORROSION sees it take effect, BADLY POISONING the fungal boxer... but it does not look sick. Rather, the POISON seems to HEAL its wounds.

Hideo's scowl intensified at the man's "offer".

"I…I'm not going with any Rocket!" How could he trust any of them? Forcing Eris Halla to work for them, attacking Littleroot and nearly burning him with it. How could he trust any of them?!

Watching the way that Breloom sucked up its own Toxic drool was enough to break the Meowscarada's confident facade, the tall cat cringing at the sight. She barely even acknowledged how little damage her attack had done - it had just been to get some distance, distance she was glad to get from a Toxic-drool-drinker.

Hideo pointed towards his opponents. "Meowser, come on! We just gotta beat him, then-"

He was interrupted by a paw over his mouth, gently pushing him back. "Meowser? Why're you stopping me?" A nervous sound from his Pokemon gave him a vague answer - that it wasn't a good idea to continue this fight. His immediate thought was to switch her out for a different Pokemon, one more willing to fight - but he reconsidered after remembering the spikes strewn about where he was.

He still didn't know what they were, and if he'd risk getting one of his Pokemon hurt or even poisoned. Or something else entirely - who knew what this guy had in store?

It took him a moment of pensive consideration before reaching a decision - and that moment of actually thinking this through gave him a chance to be reasonable. He looked back towards his opponent. "...I'm not going to recall her, and I'm not gonna follow you or any Rockets. But I won't go down where you came from. Is that ok? I'll look for another way out."

Had he been better-prepared for the Ultra Deep Sea, he would've been more willing to battle it out and risk some of his Pokemon getting knocked out. But coming here was a total accident, and until he knew how to safely get out, every loss was going to hurt.

While Gavin has no qualms with thrashing a child to teach them a lesson against sticking their nose where it didn't belong, there was no glory or pride to be had in beating down a surrendering opponent. He doesn't recall his Breloom immediately, in case this was a trick, but two clicks of his tongue see the boxer take up a defensive stance rather than leaping across the field.[break][break]

"If you stumble around here in want of an exit, you've every chance of running into Rockets less forgiving than myself."[break][break]

There were several among their number that wouldn't hesitate to kidnap a lost civilian in hopes of profit. That was beyond Gavin's goals. He cared only for the safety of the Seals, for Rocket's objective.[break][break]

"I'll guide you away from here. You can keep your Pokémon out, and I'll recall my own." Shadows whisper around the Breloom, swallowing it up. Shadows swirl around him, as well, though they do no more than that. "You force my hand, otherwise."

The boy grumbled, unhappy that his own Pokemon was being uncooperative now. There wasn't much use pushing his Pokemon to fight a battle they didn't want to battle, so Hideo was stuck listening to the Rocket's ultimatum.

He didn't doubt there might be worse Rockets in these caves, ones that wouldn't even try to convince him to give up before beating him up. Or worse. But he also didn't have any reason to trust this guy wasn't going to do the same at a moment's notice, even if he did recall his Pokemon as promised.

"Well, I'm not gonna fight you," he answered. "I won't go down your way."

"But I think I'll take my chances on my own." He grabbed onto his Meowscarada. "Meowser, let's go back, now!"

His Meowscarada, equally eager to get away from the Toxic-taster, wrapped her arms around Hideo, putting her energy into a Quick Attack - in the direction they came from, careful to avoid stepping or running into any of the Dark Spikes strewn about the area. It wasn't the most energy-efficient escape plan, but it was the fastest (and safest) they had.

They'd just have to try their chances through a different pathway - when they found one.

Hideo Kino opts for recklessness, seizing hold of his Pokémon to dash away. It was not an infallible strategy. With the right combination of Pokémon, moves, and his own knowledge of their surroundings due to its proximity to a key location, he could have caught the boy.[break][break]

Fingers ghost over his pokeball belt before his hand drops to his side. It wasn't worth it. If the child ran afoul of other Rockets in his reckless attempt to escape, so be it. It would teach him a lesson.[break][break]

Gavin turns on his heel and goes to brief his allies.
