A certain sorrow grips her chest as she dwells on Kanto, “I’m glad to be home too,” she admits truthfully. Because Kanto wasn’t home anymore, and that was a sad realization. It likely never would be again.

The professor listens intently to Annalise’s response, tilting her head slightly to keep her gaze trained on her, “Fieldwork is fun! I wish I got to do more of that sometimes,” and she really did. Being cooped up in a lab pouring over data and samples was hardly her idea of a fun time, but it was necessary, “Maybe once this,” she makes a similar vague motion that Annalise did earlier, “Is all over we can do some fieldwork together. You can show me what you’re studying,” anything wrought with knowledge is exceedingly interesting to the professor.

When Annalise shifts the topic to an apology for not reaching out, a bit of an awkward laugh breath past her half smile, “It’s totally fine. That’s not something to apologize for,” she isn’t a Ranger, there was no reason why their work would foster a stronger relationship like between her and ollie morales, “We’ve all been very busy,” the most basic but truthful excuse.

annalise perks up like a plant thriving despite its lack of sunlight. Eva Morales wants to go out into the field with her. even in this nightmare place, the proposition is dreamlike for a girl trying to break into the scientific side of her ranger career.[break][break]
"oh my gosh, yesss!" she gushes, voice somehow still restrained to a whisper, eyes twinkling. "we should so do that. let's get you out of the lab for a little bit!"

Annalise’s delight at the prospect of working together brings a brief, fleeting moment of actual joy. Eva’s smile is the brightest yet. She nods in agreement and enthusiasm as their collaboration in the future, “Alright, I won't let you forget about this either!” she warns with a mildly playful sparkle to her tone, “When I get stir crazy in the lab and need a field work fix, I’m coming for you.”

Of course, the bright moment was fleeting, snatched right from their clutches by the heavy weight of everything else pressing down on them. It may have not been intentional, but the way she smiles and avoids elaboration is telling, especially for a PARANOID woman whose wounds keep being torn open instead of given time to heal.

Eva stops, a no bullshit kind of gaze fixing on Annalise’s back until she turns around, “Did Ollie tell you?” they were close, so she would put it past him, “Or was it Matias?” she says his name softly as if saying it too loud may cause him to appear in the mist like a haunting specter.

it only takes a few paces for annalise to realize Eva Morales is no longer walking beside her. the professor's gaze begins to burn a hole in her back, prompting her to look over her shoulder and see that she stopped. she stops, too, and feels a knot of trepidation forming in her stomach. before she can even think to ask anything — or think of anything, really — eva beats her to the punch.

it hangs in the air for a stretch, but the look in her eyes betrays the answer before her mouth does. her voice meets hers at the same level, a haunted whisper low enough to keep the ghosts from appearing.

The ghost of MATIAS SILPH haunts them both for what she assumes is different reasons, but the the putrid stench of it is the same: betrayal.

“For . . . what he . . . put me through?” she slowly repeats, her brows furrowing in confusion. It makes sense that the word is getting out. It’s not like they were ‘normal people. As far as she knows, the news should just be a break up. That’s it, period. No details accounting the infidelity and how he promptly moved on as if she never existed, “What did he tell you?” she asked curiously.

"yeah," she says quietly in the wake of Eva Morales picking through her apology. even without the infidelity, she feels like there's something messed up about proposing and then breaking it off suddenly a few months later. annalise doesn't want to reopen old wounds (or create new ones), but she feels like she owes eva the information she's reaching out for. "um ... " she begins, looking around like the carefully-picked answer to the question could be found among the glittering rocks around them. "at first, he just told me you guys had a mutual breakup."

and then, after he begged her not to go home, after he'd reached for her face in what she now believes was his first attempt to kiss her, he had dangled the truth in front of her. or what she thinks is the truth.

"but later on he admitted that it wasn't really like that. and he, like ... he told me why you guys really broke up."

she wrings her hands as she speaks, unconsciously picking at her cuticles. there's no nice way of putting it, but she tries to keep the details as delicately vague as possible. enough to communicate "i know basically all of it" without breathing the news of his affair into existence.

Eva hasn’t told a soul the truth. She’s kept it bottled up and tight to her chest for too long. The close-kept secret was a burden she accepted to bear both out of embarrassment for being made out to be a fool, but also a sliver of respect for the parties involved. Respect PENELOPE LIVY and MATIAS SILPH didn’t deserve.

Apparently, she wasn’t extended the same courtesy. Was he going around telling people? As if bragging about his new conquests and how he left her for someone better?

It’s likely the PARANOIA of the realm talking, but even without it she would be hurt, embarrassed, and (as always) envious of the way he moved on so easily.

Eva’s gaze snaps away from Annalise’s as the pit in her stomach rises to her throat. Not here, now is not the time.

It’s hard to swallow, but she does her best to keep her voice from breaking, “I see.”

The professors seals herself up into a neatly packaged silhouette of stoic professionalism, once again suppressing emotions for an explosion at a later time, “We should keep going,” she encourages, walking back towards Annalise but still maintaining her firm gaze with the ground. She couldn’t look at her now that she knew she was privy to her vulnerable secrets. What a fool Annalise must think she is.

the way Eva Morales looks away makes annalise's heart ache for her. maybe she shouldn't have said anything — but it wouldn't have changed anything except leave her alone in her hurt. she thought maybe the professor would've wanted someone in her corner, but now she feels full of uncertainty as eva withdraws.
