The interdream zone seems to be messing with her comms headset.[break][break]

Luka taps her ear in frustration, but only manages to get static in response. It's been like this for every channel she's tried, and she's starting to wonder if her device is malfunctioning, or if Rocket has managed to scramble their signals enough that nothing goes through.[break][break]

She continues walking through the labyrinthine cave system, checking her six and trying to tap into a working feed. For a while, crackling static is her only companion, but eventually a few garbled words manage to filter through the noise. For a moment she thinks she's imagined it, but the voice comes through again, clearer this time.[break][break]

"Hello?" she almost shouts back, not thinking about who might be on the other side, "Can you hear me?"

He'd been exploring the ULTRA DEEP SEA alone for some time now. It wasn't advised, of course. Certainly not with the danger of being hunted by TEAM ROCKET. Nevertheless, Remiel wanted to do his part in scouting the cave system for the fabled SEALSTONES.

Even still, he couldn't say the eerie bioluminescent setting didn't put him on edge somewhat. Strange alien sounds echoed throughout the chamber almost consistently. Even the SHINY KARTANA that traveled alongside him like a small bird seemed a little paranoid. His comms device sparking to life suddenly with garbled nonsense for a moment didn't help lighten the mood either. But he'd heard someone...

"Hello? Can you read me?"

The royal calls out through these wireless communications, having stopped to activate his earpiece. "Are you in need of assistance? What's your designation? Over."

The immediate relief Luka feels is quickly replaced by a sinking in her stomach.[break][break]

Although slightly muddied and garbled at first, the voice that filters through her earpiece is very distinctly Galarian. She’d like to think it’s unfamiliar, but the familiar posh tone becomes clearer and clearer with every word in a way she can’t ignore. [break][break]

"Oh, pardon me," she says, her voice suddenly flat and cold, "I didn’t realize I had tapped into Team Rocket’s channel."

The voice that responds certainly isn't the same one that he'd heard initially. As the static clears, that much is made certain. That's also when he realizes that, through some miracle of fate, his comms unit has put him in contact with none other than luka chêne herself.

He takes a moment to sigh and rub at the bridge of his nose before activating his earpiece again. "You haven't, Luka. I'm no longer part of Team Rocket... over." He answers.

His radio goes silent afterward, though he keeps his comms open. Perhaps she needs some time to absorb that information. Perhaps she thinks he's lying.

He's right— Luka is skeptical. She hates feeling like she can't trust someone but Remiel has lied to her enough that she can't just take him at face value anymore. Especially now, when danger lurks around every corner and anything could be a trap.[break][break]

There's another hiss of static as her comms crackles back to life. "Why should I believe you?" she asks, trying to keep her voice as emotionless as possible. There's a turmoil of feelings brewing inside her, but until she can be certain one way or another, she tries to shove them down.

The question she fires back isn't entirely surprising. Quite frankly, Remiel cannot fathom saying anything that could help reassure such a worry. This was especially true given their history, and he's almost certain she knows that.

"What would be the point of lying to you now? I'm not out to hurt you, after all..." He never had been. Though, in a cruel twist of fate, he supposed he had on some level.

Truth be told, it would probably be in her best interest not to trust him. Remiel knew she had nothing to fear, of course, but if their roles had been switched he would have every right to be wary himself. Though he thought about interrupting her to say as much, however, the exiled prince instead pauses to take a deep breath.

"And, pray tell, why would I do that? What would I stand to gain, Luka? Over." He responds, briefly taking note of his Kartana as it scouts the path ahead in a flutter.

Every word that flows from her lips hurts to say. It's still hard to believe that the man who had once laid beside her, crooning sweet nothings into her ear, could ever be capable of the despicable acts associated with Rocket. She knows he must have hurt people— has he killed anyone? The thought makes her sick.[break][break]

She knows there's no real reason for Rocket to target her— bar Lulu Flint, but that's different. She's a nobody, hardly threatening. She looks like she'd make a squeaky toy noise if you hit her. Though as she continues to walk, her exaggerated concerns start to become a legitimate fear. This place is unnatural and unnerving, and twists the senses in a way that inspires paranoia.[break][break]

The former Admin winces. She was right. He'd hunted and hurt others in the name of Team Rocket before. But, conveniently, she was choosing to ignore the blatant difference between those he'd victimized and her.

"Because I know you..."

The way he saw it, she could take that in one of two ways. The first was the idea that, if anything suspicious happened to her, he would be suspect number one. Whether or not she'd shared information about his involvement with Rocket with anyone else was unknown to him. But, in a sense, he hoped she had. Perhaps it would serve to comfort her more.

Either she was choosing to ignore the true meaning behind his words or she'd truly failed to understand. Remiel chose to believe the former. Perhaps she was hoping to elicit some sort of confession from him or admission of guilt.

Remiel underestimates how truly dense Luka is. She doesn't get the implicaton behind his words at all. And instead of clarifying, he just retierates what he'd already said. Except to her, it still doesn't mean anything. [break][break]

In fact, it's sad to think about. Remiel knows her better than most; she'd opened up to him about her past, let him see the flaws she always kept locked behind a saccharine exterior. But what he had said at the masquerade was true: she never knew him at all.[break][break]

Right now, he might as well be a stranger.[break][break]

"I-" He's right. She has no good reason to stay connected. "Because, I...I-I thought I could finally get some actual answers out of you! But you're just being all vague and weird instead. I have no idea what you're trying to say!"

His latest inquiry finally manages to coax the truth out from her own lips. Not in its entirety, of course. He still wasn't exactly sure what she wanted him to say, after all. Nevertheless, it did not change the fact that this entire interaction of theirs had degraded into a verbal tug-of-war.

Silence follows her latest transmission for a while. Just before she thinks he might have given up, however, her comms unit sparks back to life with the Galarian-tinted sound of his voice once more. "... I'm saying that, despite everything, I still care about your safety, Luka... over." He sighs.

What else was he to say? How else could he convince her to believe him? Just as he considers telling her this isn't the time and place for interrogation anyway, however, another voice emerges from the static of their channel for an instant: one that clearly doesn't belong to either of them:

"Hel-! I'm stu-- in th- mus-ro-- p--!"

Remiel furrows his brow before speaking over the channel again. "... that wasn't you just now, was it? Over..."

Nothing Remiel says is very reassuring. Perhaps her talk with ollie morales earlier had helped open her eyes some; she feels entirely disillusioned with the prince she'd once been so besotted with.[break][break]

"...I wish I could believe that," she replies with a sigh of her own, so softly that she's not sure it'll even pick up over their comms.[break][break]

But before their conversation can further devolve a crackling voice interrupts them. The words, distorted by static and something loud in the background, are almost completely lost to her. But the urgency and fear behind them comes through perfectly.[break][break]

"No," Luka answers, a shiver crawling up the length of her spine, "It wasn't."
