They appeared torturous, afflicted with hatred, envy, fear, and above all, resentment. To walk as one of the living among the dead invited grudges from all that circled for eternity in that place.[break][break]

She tilted her head at him, as if regarding him fully for the first time. A hand rested on her cheek, thoughtful, before her look of intense concentration faded into quiet, privately amused laughter.[break][break]

"Are you always so eager to flirt with poor decisions?" she teased gently. "That seems like something that would wear down most optimists over time."[break][break]

It was at this moment the entrees appeared, and with them, an excuse to cease prying and to resume eating their meal.[break][break]
