Jett had made sure his preference for deliveries was more well known, he wasn’t much of a fighter even with his looks. His appearance was certainly intimidating, his small eyes, the almost semi-permanent scowl on his face, and even the way in which he kicked Cyclizar into gear, Bubby, is buddy from a long time ago; his partner.

The man settled, another cargo mission, tagged onto his back in a large backpack; heavy, almost the type that would crush him under its weight were he smaller, but now; it was just normally heavy.

”Take it easy Bubby, we gotta wait for our partner.” He said as he patted the head of his ride. ”I think we’ll get a good’un today, these league guys are great ones.”

Julia liked doing cargo delivery. She liked helping out the League by delivering supplies instead of getting into the fray with Rocket. She wasn't totally opposed to fighting, especially if it was to protect someone or something, but she was a Ranger first and foremost, not a soldier. She'd volunteered for this to protect the region from whatever Rocket was planning with the Seal Stones, not to fight. So when she got the order to accompany one Jett Roan on a supply run, she was more than happy to comply.

[break][break]She rode atop her trusty Dodrio, Chester, carrying a pack of her own stuffed with crucial supplies. She was more grateful than ever for Chester's three hearts and six lungs that gave him incredible stamina. She spotted a man who matched Jett's description astride a Cyclizar, carrying a pack of his own.

[break][break]"Hey, are you Jett?" Julia asked. She extended a hand for him to shake. "I'm Ranger Julia Davis, but you can just call me Julia."

[break][break]It was only then that she really took in his face with its small eyes and scowl. She blinked, her smile faltering for a fleeting moment before she turned it back up with the full force of her friendliness. This guy looked pretty intimidating, but they were on the same side, so there was no reason to be scared of him. Besides, it was rude to judge a book by its cover!

Ranger Julia, Jett didn’t respond, not immediately; he looked at her with his beady eyes hidden behind the tinted lens of his sunglasses. His expression was almost unreadable, the passive scowl on his face lessened for a moment as he fumbled around in his pocket, a square packet that almost resembled a packet of cigarettes that he bounced up and down until a singular one stuck up, which he placed in his mouth.

”Jett’s fine as well, nice too meetcha Julia.” He chewed on the fake chocolate cigarette for a moment. ”Ready whenever you are.” He patted the head of his Cyclizar, Bubby who had gotten ready to move, items strapped to its back, and the Rucksack on his own.

She seemed like a peppy one, the kind to power through on goodwill alone, he wasn’t sure just how true that was, but Rangers were those that cared about their surroundings, each in their own way. Jett wondered just how this one would show it, but he wiped such thoughts from his mind.

”Your first mission today?” So he opted to fill the void with noise at least.

Yeah, those sunglasses definitely added to the tough-guy look he had going. His lack of immediate response left Julia awkwardly sitting there with her hand still extended, her smile beginning to feel awkward. Did she have the wrong guy? His scowl seemed to soften for a moment as he reached into his pocket for... was that a pack of cigarettes? Julia's smile finally fell a bit as she internally debated on whether to tell him that probably wasn't a good idea, but the item that popped out of the box didn't look like a cigarette. It looked more like...

[break][break]"Is that chocolate?" she asked, momentarily forgetting that this was supposed to be an introduction. This guy was definitely interesting so far!

[break][break]Luckily, he immediately confirmed that he was, indeed, Jett. That got the smile to pop back. "Nice to meet you, too! Let's get going!" Chester's middle and right heads squawked, and the Dodrio, carrying carefully balanced saddlebags, started down the path.

[break][break]"Pretty much, yeah," she replied to Jett's question. "I've been doing a lot of work at one of the base camps until now. What about you?"

At the very least, it wouldn’t be a quiet walk; Jett could be somewhat satisfied with that. ”Want one?” He offered a chocolate “cigarette”, the craving of nicotine was fought off with the addictiveness of sugar. His steps were slow, and Cyclizar was ready to begin walking down the path as well, a casual stroll of momentous importance.

”Mostly the same as now. Been carrying a lotta stuff down, info to share, and being a nuisance when I can be.” He gave his answer in short, he was happy enough to be doing what he was doing. Leave the big epic battles to those at the top, he wanted to do what he could at the bottom.
[break][break]
”What’s the situation at the base camps? Looking any better than the rest of this?” It was a battlefield, he had seen some gruesome things; that one swordsman, Hitoshi Inoue, that man was unhinged to a degree rarely seen. It would only get worse as the wear and tear continued on.

A part of him hoped that this bright young woman wouldn’t have to bare witness to any of that, but experience told him that wouldn’t be the case.

"Sure, thanks!" Julia said, taking the offered candy. She stuck the end in her mouth, planning to let it hang there for a while, but it was chocolate, so that plan probably wouldn't last too long. Julia liked to think she had good self-control with what she ate—she had to stay in shape, after all—but when the chocolate was already melting in her mouth, that was a lot harder.

[break][break]She giggled and pinched the stick of chocolate between her index and middle finger. If she realized how silly she looked, she did not care. "Hopefully being a nuisance to Rocket," she said with a playful smile. A thought flickered through her mind, threatening the good mood: What if Isaac Merlo was out there?

[break][break]If he is, he's not doing anything really bad, she thought. There's no way he would, Rocket or not.

[break][break]"It's been safe at the base camps." She didn't even let the words "so far" fully form in her head. "Some people come back tired and worn down, their Pokémon fainted, but the medics are doing a really good job of healing them up." Her smile, which had grown bittersweet, sparkled with genuine joy again. "But others come back triumphant, cheering and congratulating each other on a job well done, whether it was a battle with Rocket or an Ultra Beast or just a cargo delivery like this. It makes me happy to see them happy, you know?"

[break][break]Sure, they usually had to turn right back around for another mission, but Julia figured that as long as they kept their spirits high, they'd make it.

”Aye, doing my best in that frame; but I guess I might be causing a bit of a problem for both sides.”[break[[break]
He said just before he burst into a round of laughter, it wasn’t as if he was being particularly apologetic either, but he couldn’t really hide the smirk on his face either as the laughter died away. This Julia was a good person, he was running into a treasure trove of them today, and that made it just that little bit harder to exist around them.

Sharing a space with someone who could show genuine joy just because others were celebrating, and share that joy later. It was hard, but he understood it well enough. More people for him to strive to be like.

”Haaah, it’s a good sign then. If people can celebrate, it means things ain’t too far gone. Gotta keep the spirits up somehow.” He said with an almost wistful tone in his voice, his eyes locked on the path ahead of them. He didn’t allow his pessimism to seep into the next statement that came from his lips. ”Let’s get ourselves a nice welcoming party.”

That was when a small rumbling came from the front, there was the heavy churning of the ground and the ceiling as pokemon moved through it, and Jett noted the ground rise up in a spot, the metal head of a pokemon poked above, steelix who roared loudly the moment its eyes landed on the trainers in front of it.

Julia sputtered out an unexpected laugh, grateful she hadn't put the chocolate back in her mouth yet. "Wait, what? How?"

[break][break]He, too, seemed to believe in keeping spirits high in these trying times. And the prospect of her own welcoming party, while not very realistic, was pretty great. "Yeah!"

[break][break]Well, they were getting a welcome, all right, but not the kind that Julia had imagined. She gasped sharply and stopped in her tracks when the cave began to rumble in front of them. Part of the ground rose up, and a Steelix's head burst forth from the cracks. The Iron Snake Pokémon roared before burrowing beneath the surface again.

[break][break]"Look out!" Julia cried, dropping her treat and tugging on Chester's reins. The Steelix was rumbling toward the two of them, and Julia did not want to be above it when it popped back up. Chester's right head squawked in protest; he could just jump out of the way of the oncoming Dig and be fine! The left head let out a caw of its own, not wanting to do that with his trainer and a load of cargo on his back. The middle head piped up to mediate, leaving the Dodrio rooted firmly in place while he tried to figure out his next move.

[break][break]And the Steelix's rumbling was going right toward Jett and his Cyclizar, who didn't have Chester's Flying-type advantage. Heck.

[break][break]Without a second thought, Julia tossed out Lazuli's Dive Ball between the burrowed Steelix and Jett. The Lapras formed just in time to intercept the Dig with a surprised cry, but when she saw Jett and his Cyclizar behind her, she understood what she'd been called to do.

[break][break]"Confuse Ray, Lazuli!"

[break][break]Lazuli warbled out a discordant note that made even Julia wince, and orbs of colorful lights formed around her horn. She bowed her head, sending the lights dancing toward the Steelix. It was too slow to burrow back underground before the orbs spun around its head, visibly disorienting it.

Jett couldn’t hide the small laugh of his own. ”Looong story, I’ll be sure to tell ya later on how.” He said as he gripped his own pokeball, he didn’t want Cyclizar struck by this, so there was little to no point but to take out another pokemon he could trust in fully, Remoraid. Holding it within his palm, it wasn’t quite the way in which someone would grip a revolver, that would have been too uncomfortable, but rather he held her gently, Lucky.

”Lock on.” He commanded Lucky, her eyes began to glow as she began to lock onto her target before clicking into place, another move she knew that would be called on, Hydro pump. ”Fire.” He said, the pokemon in his hand let loose a large blast of water as if to not be left behind by the support. ”Thanks for the cover.” And his Cyclizar, Bubby, followed along with a hum of sorts as if to agree with his trainer.

Confused, struck, and everything else, the Steelix infront of them finally began to glow, grow brighter and brighter in that moment, as if going through an evolution. The ridges alongside its lower jaw began to double, its mouth became more curved. Its eyes glowed in a bright blue, and a series of rotating steel spirals appeared around it before it dug into the ground, and hid once more, the shaking moving away from them as if commanded by its trainer.

”So it ain’t natural huh? Keep an eye out, we might be dealing with a ground specialist, in a cave like this they could pop out fro-.” Then the ground began to shake, it was different to before, far more intense. ”Lucky, Ice Beam on the ceiling, reinforce it.” He said as his pokemon followed along, even as he was being thrown around; it was better than being buried.

Oh, man, Julia could feel a story coming on. Too bad it had to wait until this Steelix had been taken care of.

[break][break]"No problem," Julia said. "Nice shot!"

[break][break]This was fine. No, it was more than fine; this was going great! There was no way this Steelix could take on the two of them at once. They'd take it down and be on their way with no more cave shaking.

[break][break]But then the Steelix was bathed in the light of Mega Evolution, and things suddenly looked a bit less great. With its confusion cleared, it easily burrowed back underground and... went away from them? Where was it going? It had just Mega Evolved, so there was no way it could be running away.

[break][break]"Whoa!" Julia shouted when the ground started shaking again. She clung tight to Chester's reins and hunched down closer to him, eyes squeezed shut. She barely heard Jett's command for Lucky to Ice Beam the ceiling; it was like cotton balls had been stuffed into her ears, amplifying the sound of her own racing heart.

[break][break]Chester's left head reached back to nuzzle his trainer, warbling in concern. Julia let the texture of his feathers ground her—oh, couldn't there be a better word for that?!

[break][break]"I'm okay," Julia said, more to herself than Chester. "I'm okay, I'm okay, I'm okay...!" She couldn't let herself freeze up here. She wouldn't let there be another tragedy like the one she'd faced before.

[break][break]Chester's right head squawked a warning before he jumped back. The ground burst open where the Dodrio had just been standing, and a Mega Tyranitar jumped out, bringing a Sand Stream with it. Something else burrowed toward Jett, likely the Mega Steelix.

[break][break]"What's wrong?" a mocking voice asked. "Does the shaking scare you, little girl?"

[break][break]A man and a woman, both in dark clothes and wearing cloth masks over their faces, emerged from the sandstorm. They didn't need a big "R" on their clothes for Julia to guess they were with Rocket.

Jett couldn’t help but be a little bit concerned with the reactions of the girl nearby, she was panicking over something, but he couldn’t put his mind as to what. The ceiling had a shine of ice, an extra layer that would hopefully hold it there. Still, they had two strong trainers in front of them. ”Remoraid, I believe in you.” He told his pokemon, who had begun to aim her attack at the ground, a large blast of water which had begun to make the ground moist; he wasn’t aiming for that pokemon in specific, but it was immediately followed by a blast of ice which had turned the ground even harder than before causing the Steelix to come back up.

”Cyclizar, get ready to shift gears, Remoraid, use Hydro pump again.” He said as he sat upon his Pokemon’s back again, right as the ground was made to shake with an earthquake again, the sandstorm was getting thicker; it was scratching at his skin, and even that of his pokemon.
[break][break]
”Julia. We’re working together, don’t worry. We won’t let anything bad happen to you, trust me.” It was a platitude, but he said the words regardless, he wasn’t sure what she was scared of. But at the same time, not everyone had a violent background like he did.

”We’ll pull out and win, it doesn’t matter what these guys have to say. They’ll just end up losing anyway.”

Julia gritted her teeth at the Rocket's taunting. "I'm not a little girl!" she shot back. That was probably not the right thing to focus on, but Julia's priorities were more skewed than usual right now.

[break][break]Her own name caught her attention. Even if Jett's words were just platitudes, they still resonated within Julia's heart. Despite the sandstorm buffering them, Chester's middle head turned back to give her an encouraging squawk, and Lazuli sang out a reassuring note. That's right, Julia wasn't facing this alone. This wasn't going to be like last time.

[break][break]"Yeah. Yeah! Let's take these guys down!" There was still a slight tremor in her voice, but her fighting spirit was quickly returning. She would stoke it until it burned away any fear she still held. Powered by Julia's returning determination, the Key Stone in her Mega Anklet shone bright, resonating with Lazuli's Laprasite. Lazuli was cocooned in a bright light, which quickly broke apart to reveal her larger Mega form.

[break][break]"Resonance!" Julia called.

[break][break]Lazuli sang toward the ceiling, causing Ice-type energy to coalesce into a huge chunk of ice above the battlefield.

[break][break]With a roar, the Tyranitar stomped on the ground, causing pointed rocks to erupt from the ground beneath Lazuli. She let out a cry of pain, but it didn't stop her own attack from crashing down on the Tyranitar. It didn't do nearly as much damage as the Stone Edge had done to Lazuli, but more importantly, rainbow light reflected off the ice, creating an Aurora Veil that surrounded Julia, Jett, and their teams.

Jett smirked as she regained her confidence, that was the kind of thing he wanted to see; she was better smiling. ”Alright Remoraid. Focus Energy, then Lock on.” He said as he looked forward, got off the back of his Cyclizar, and removed the packs; to lay down on the ground. ”Use Dragon claw on Tyranitar, don’t let it attack Lapras.”

Stone edge, another one began to dash forward, heavy cuts into the air, a loud sound before Cyclizar jumped forward; claws poised to cut through them, a strong cutting attack just after the veil that protected them all.

”Here we go, Remoraid. Use Hydro Pump.” To keep the Steelix at bay, the pokemon was pushed back by the rush of water, leaving the room for the other to keep up, at least that had been the plan.

But the two pokemon began to glow, a powerful glow, the movement of the trainers behind them. ”Mega Evolve!” There it was, the change to the battle as if matching the movements of the Lapras, in that moment; Jett wondered just why he hadn’t invested in that.

”it’s all you.” He left it open to Julia once again.

"Thanks for that!" Julia called once Jett's Cyclizar had broken up the Stone Edge. "Lazuli, Water Pulse!"

[break][break]The pulsing blast clearly did a number on the Tyranitar, even in its Mega state, but Lazuli was looking pretty worn down, too. Thank goodness Julia had an ally to keep Lazuli covered, but she couldn't let him do all the work! Following his lead, she hopped off Chester's back and hurried to remove his saddlebags.

[break][break]"Swords Dance," she whispered to her Dodrio. Julia didn't like playing dirty like this, but, well, they'd started it. Chester's right head seemed to be thinking the same thing, and even the left only hesitated for a moment before swords of light appeared around his body and clashed together.

[break][break]They weren't quite sneaky enough, though. The light and sound caught the Tyranitar's attention, and he turned to them with a growl.

[break][break]"Quick, Jump Kick!"

[break][break]Chester's middle and right heads squawked, the sound echoing off the cavern walls, as he ran toward the Tyranitar. He made a mighty leap with his powerful legs, and before the Tyranitar could retaliate, he slammed one of his feet into it, sending it reeling. The dual assault was too much even for the Mega Pokémon, and it collapsed in a rumbling heap.

One had been taken out, that only left the other really; and Jett was confident that between the two of them they would be able to work this out, as he pointed Remoraid in that direction, focus energy set, locked on, and he felt the pokemon tense tightly in his grip. ”Any time, now how about we wrap this one up too?” He said with a smirk as he spurred on his remoraid, another hydro pump.

It was different to the last, a pokemon who went from middling, to extraordinary based on its own luck. That was why she was called, Lucky, and the blast she shot showed that, a sniper shot that sunk into the joints on its body, and struck the core underneath, a powerful critical hit that struck harder than the usual; a powerful blow that made the Steelix roar loudly, in pain, and it seemed to look back to Jett.

Well, his Remoraid wouldn’t be able to do much for long as the Steelix rushed towards him, but, just as he had told his partner to trust in him, he would trust in her just as well. ”My back is yours.” A smirk on his face as Cyclizar had gotten ready to intervene, but the knowledge he wouldn’t be able to get a real scratch on that monster.
