Niky wasn't sure why an aquintance of his parents wanted him here, but here he was, on the opposite side of the city from where his record store and home was. It was kind of annoying, and he made it clear to them that he will not be doing this again. Plus, they weren't even here?! Why the hell is he here then?! Either way, the aquintance was an idol producer of some sort that missed out on getting him to signing up. But were still decent enough with his family that he held no grudges, and often collaborated with them on things. The former idol star didn't know a lot by virtue of being too absorbed in everything else. The blonde wore an Alolan T-shirt and shorts, along with his cane and sneakers. Spike and Bittyboo were with him too, his Jolteon and Noibat respectively.

This was some kind of tryout thing, looking for hidden gems. Really? He wasn't much older than any of the idol hopefuls. Plus, this wasn't exactly a large thing either. It may open doors, but it would hardly catapult someone to the top. Whoever ended up winning this would need a good manager. Apparently, he was going to be one of the judges. Actually, they wanted him to take an active role, if he wanted it. Thankfully, they were offering to pay him. Along with a free dinner for him and his Pokemon. Can't say no to that. There was about a dozen contestestants. One drew his interest right away. The one with silvery blue hair. Flashy. That was good. But could sing the song and dance too? He stayed standing, double checking what he can do with the other judges. He was given a very wide berth on what he could do. That was good. He knew first hand what to expect...he had been a star at one point. A career cut short due to a drunk driver. But it still felt fresh in his mind. It was just waiting for the Lights, Camera, Action!

When he had learned about these tryouts he had been quick to take interest. While usually these kind of things wouldn’t really get one anywhere he had heard of the rare occurrences where individuals had been scouted from events like this. And he was hoping that this would be one of those times or would at least get his name more out there. And he could be noticed for more than just his looks.

He knew he had a pretty face that often drew people in. Had made him quite popular in his youth and had made his father more than sure it would make him the perfect business man. Perhaps a lawyer or some other job along those lines. However he had never wanted that dreaming of standing on a stage with people chanting his name. That had been his dream. And because of that he had often sang on the streets of the town or city his father had business in at the time, having a hat laying out for people to put money in, much to his fathers chagrin.

The young man knew that being an idol was a make or break world and that people either had it or they didn’t. And despite what his father always said he felt like he had what it takes. And he hoped the judges would think so as well. Especially Niky Racz former idol. Someone he hoped to impress because it would mean he had talent if a former idol thought he was good.

Noticing the former idol hadn’t been hard. He had been surprised to discovery a former idol would be a judge and he had discreetly studied him and the other judges as well as all the other constants to see what information he could gather. From what he had gathered all the judges were here but the person who had decided to set all this up hadn’t shown up yet. Though that was only assumption due to the tryouts not having started yet. Seemed they were waiting for someone else to show up as well. Soon enough, his former handler came strolling in. A...round man with a surprisingly clean shaven face. "You got shorter since the last time we met. Good to see you, again, sir." With a smile and joking look on his face, Niky barely recognized the man. "Oh shut up you brat, you were shorter then, and I was more baby faced back then and needed something to age myself up! It's good to see you too, kiddo. Good to see that you've grown up." The two men shook hands, jovial and nice. Mr. Borje Jorgenssen was his manager way back when. Terrible with kids, Niky was the first to admit that he was sometimes...ok, a lot of times, a little shit towards the man. But he was also the first to be by Niky's side when the accident happened, the first to suggest mental health specialists, the first to suggest different coping mechanisms, the first to congratulate him on his recovery, and while he wasn't the first to suggest to Niky to move on and try retail or record store stuff, he was in full support. Even though once it became clear that Niky wouldn't be able to continue his idol career, and was dropped, Borje still did what he could to make sure that Niky was taken care of. He was a good man that the blonde never knew about until later in life, and appreciated him a lot more now. "You see the contestestants. They'll be doing Hibikase. You know, the one from Slateport's Big Beach Bash where I swear most of the audience had nosebleeds? They'll be doing this one at a time, so we can focus on them. And for you to do your thing.

Both men had chuckled briefly at the memory. That was a short lived show, but Niky vaguely remembered making most people question their sexuality and reinforcing others' love of him and his looks. Still, an interesting choice. It allowed some dancing, but skewed somewhat more on vocal work. Still, considering what this was...it may not be too bad. "Alrighty. Just let me do my critiques and request for repeat performances. And we'll see if any of these wannabes deserve to have some doors opened." With a michievous grin, Borje shuddered and laughed at the same time, and wanted things to start. With a brief speech to the contestants, it was on. The most observant one, the flashy silvery hair, was the last on the list. Okay then, hopefully it wouldn't be the save the best one for last kind of deals. Well, the first one was up. Too static, too monotone, no expression, no life, and what little movement he had was stiff. Clearly no intention of actually trying. Niky said this to the man's face. And squared up on him, clearly not happy to be told what to do to improve. Intimidation and maybe parentage was how this guy got in. Bittyboo had to use Whirlwind to get the guy out of Niky's face. Then got a Thunder Wave from Spike to reinforce the point. "While I may be critical, I am also trying to give you pointers on how to improve. So even if you don't make it in this one, you can still walk away with something. Hopefully helpful. For those that don't know, I'm Niky Racz. I was an idol up until a few years ago. I know what I'm doing. Whether you take my advice or not is up to you. But you will not yell and threaten. That makes you into a PR nightmare, and no matter how good you are, you'll be dropped like a ton of bricks if you behave like that to anyone."

Especially with social media. Even fantastic artists, but horrible people, get checked by backlash. The second one was better, a lot more loose. But focused too much on the dancing part, and not enough on the voice. Niky told the guy as such, even did a few voice practice bits. Then did a small repeat, following the guy's movement, but with his voice. The guy matched up pretty good, and the duet was decent enough until the last half of the song. Coughing and rasping, Niky offered the guy a bottled water. Dance and movement was great, but voice was so much harder to work on, and suggested looking into some voice work and exercises, including a few of Niky's favorite sites regarding them. The guy was a lot more receptive. The third was a girl. Boy did she have a voice, but paused between dance queues. Niky remembered doing that a few times. You needed to combine both, not just focus on one or the other. He commented that she had a great voice, and singing was definitely a strength of her's, but dancing and combining the two was essential. She seemed kind of snippy at that. Niky knew she would be another PR problem child. Though not as bad as the first one...

Another person appeared and he realized this person must be the one that set all this stuff. If that was the case that meant they could finally gets things rolling. From his spot he surreptitiously watched as Niki and the man interacted with each other. Allowing his eyes to drift away he allowed his gaze to drift over the rest of the people gathered.

He wondered how many people actually had what it takes. There were parents that would make their child believe they were good at something even if they weren’t. Something his own father had never done. His father being someone that didn’t believe in excessive praise or any really.

As people started getting called up he turned his attention back towards the judges. The first guy was lifeless was his routine made him wonder why had showed up in the first place. However he sure came to life when they guy critiqued him. Seriously did the guy not realize the judge was just doing his job. If one couldn’t take criticism then they wouldn’t make it far in this line of work and definitely wouldn’t be taken seriously if one threw a tantrum just because things didn’t go their way.

The silver-haired male watched the other two that went noticing where they lacked and what they were good with. The second guy would need to get more wind because one couldn’t get winded with this kind of career and the girl seemed to have trouble multitasking. The judge one again critiqued them with the girl becoming a little petulant about what he said about her.

When it came to his turn he walked onto the stage politely inclining his head. ”My name’s Jade Rivers.” with his introduction out of the way he could start and once he was given the signal to he did. Always wanting to be prepared in case off something like this coming he had taken to practicing whenever he could while balancing a proper sleep schedule and what he entered into his body so he definitely had the energy to spare as he preformed the routine, while making sure to not come off as blank with his emotions but not being to emotional either.[break] Niky Racz

The contestants continued on, and Niky would be critical, often circling around them, seeing where their eyes would go. Luckily, after the first one doing this, and they suddenly turning their attention to him, and the blonde pointing towards the rest of the judges to make them focus on them, everyone took that queue. While he did mention it, Niky asked them to do it again, for a fair chance, apologizing. Everyone had something that they could work on. Some didn't have anything overly good, just adequate. Though there was one more that he wanted to see a repeat performance. Then came the last one, the flashy guy.

Jade Rivers was his introduction. Unlike the rest, he actually introduced himself properly. Good sense. Perhaps that was something that the rest needed to work on for auditions. Then he started. Niky was drawn in immediately by the careful use of expressions. The choreography was fluid and he was energetic. Mr. Rivers hit a fine balancing act that Niky wished he had years ago. Though perhaps his youthful appearance and earnest reactions had earned him many fans anyways. "Again." This time Niky would circle again, looking for flaws. Aside from being perhaps too careful with his emotions...it was an impressive performance. Not seeing anything obvious. "Can you do it a third time?" That sure drew some attention. Despite the sweat and energy...Jade did it again.

Once done, Niky started in. "A tiny bit of projection and articulation issues at a specific spot and perhaps a little too careful on your expressions and emotions. Still, a very good job. Mr. Rivers is my favorite, but number six and ten are good runner-ups in my mind." Niky hobbled back to his seat as one of the judges thanked everyone else for their participation, and that they would be mailed or emailed a copy of their performance, their critiques of their strengths and weaknesses, and a ticket of their choice to this year's concerts in Hoenn. Niky and the other judges, plus Borje, took the three off to the side. "This isn't done yet, so don't get comfortable. We'd like to do some dinner interviews, one at a time. We'll just work with your schedules..."

Sadly...Niky wasn't exempt from this. The young man shot a dirty look at the aquintance. "You're lucky I like Borje too much..."

The round short man laughed jovially. "Really? I couldn't tell when I first started trying to manage you! You were a hellion if I ever saw one." Perhaps a bit childish, but Niky did that stick out tongue and eye thing at the man. Tonight would be number six, number ten was for lunch tomorrow, and Mr. Rivers tomorrow evening.

Niky...might have had to skip out on both the first two interviews because of retail issues. Bloody Karens. And shoplifters. Silky the Larvesta looked proud at her accomplishment of setting not one, but two people on fire. Maybe a little too proud. She still deserved snacks, though. Luckily, the other judges and Borje let it slide this time. Just as he was walking up to the restaurant, Mr. Rivers was just entering as well. "Nervious at all?" Was his way of greeting.

Being last had given him the opportunity to see how the others did and take notes of they had done. It would give him an edge when it was his turn. That was why he didn’t mind going last. He knew most people didn’t want to go first or last but he didn’t matter either way for him.

He was confident but not overly confident in his abilities. And after having to live with the kind of person his father was he had to learn patience or at least learn how to keep a level head so yeah he didn’t really care when he went. It also wasn’t like it was an overly long wait either so before he knew it it was his turn.

The former idol had him repeat his performance not once but twice but he wasn’t worried. If he didn’t like he wouldn’t have asked him to do the routine again. Having watched everyone else he had been able to get a read on Niky. He only had people repeat themselves if he liked what he saw. So he knew getting asked to repeat himself wasn’t a bad thing.

When he had been asked to repeat the routine a second time he had sensed the surprised looks thrown his way, but he was sure he felt a few glares thrown in. He didn’t bother looking to see though preoccupied with what the older male was telling him. Undoing over twenty years of conditioning wasn’t easy, before coming to Hoenn he had maintained a blank expression, his father not wanting any of his business rivals to pick up on any weakness and exploit it but he had gotten better about being open with his emotions.

”I’ll work on that,” he promised, hopefully it wouldn’t be to hard. He was trying to work on that already so hopefully that would make it easier. He listened with rapt attention as he mentioned which ones were to move up and watched the ones not chosen leave before returning his attention to Niky, the other judges, and the guy that had set all this stuff up.

Well that worked any time worked for him his schedule was currently wide open. As long as he didn’t have errands crop up. The banter between the two older men surprised him. It spoke of two people that were pretty close. But doubted asking about it would gain him any answers not that he cared enough to ask. It was still a relief when the were dismissed though so he could go home and see to his Pokémon.

A few days later he was leaving his house to meet at the chosen restaurant. Upon reaching his destination he saw that Niky was just arriving as well. ”A bit, would be weird if I wasn’t. Arrogance isn’t really my scene either,” he explained with a small shake of his head.[break] Niky Racz

Yeah, he could remember his first time auditioning. But he was also a lot younger then too. "You'll do fine. You're a lot older than what I was when I started. I've seen some arrogance get in the way of things, so that's a good thing that you're a bit tempered." Sol, the Larvesta on his shoulder, glared at the young man. "And try not to mind Sol here. She may be proud because she recently set a couple of shoplifters on fire, but she's still more glary than anything." They found the group easily enough. Niky ordered for himself, a pasta dish of some kind. Suddenly, Sol was in a better mood when he gave her the cherry tomato in his salad as the other judges and Borje asked their questions between drinks, all waters or sodas, and bites of food.

One of the judges did as Niky if he had any questions. "Sure. What made you decide to become an idol? Personally, I enjoyed dancing and singing, not knowing there was a career all about it." He did think it slightly unfair if he didn't answer his own question too. But he was also quite open to questions from Jade. There was...so little the guy had to work on, Niky was kind of surprised that no one picked him up yet. So he half wondered if the guy just thought that it would be fun to try out and see what happens.

To some extent the older male was lucky. He had wanted to start when he was a kid or maybe a bit older but his father would never how allowed him. Though he supposed it was better late than never. And without his father breathing down his neck he could finally start the process of achieving his dream. A dream he’d had since he was a child.

”Thanks,” he said glancing at the other males pokemon before raising a brow when he mentioned the pokemon setting people on fire. ”I bet they’ll think twice before doing something like that again. Nebula, he’s my Absol, will claw at anyone he thinks is a threat to me,” he explained not mentioning his often his Pokémon had to do that.

His appearance drew attention though both negative and positive. He had a pretty face and that often landed him in trouble. He couldn’t count he many times he had gotten in trouble because someone’s boyfriend or girlfriend flirted with him. They were the ones that started it and yet he was the bad guy.

Upon entering it hadn’t taken them long to locate the group. Looking over the menu he decide to get a chicken salad. Between sips of unsweetened tea and his salad he answered the questions that were asked of him. Most of them were pretty simple like his age, and where he came from.

The question Niky asked was a bit harder. But since he had been expecting a question like this it was easier to prepare an answer than it would’ve been. ”I’ve always enjoyed singing and dancing. It’s been a passion of mine since I was a kid. Certain obstacles kept me from following after my dream until now.”[break] Niky Racz

Niky chuckled a little. "She sits on a pedestal near the entrance to my record store, with a very clear warning. I've been in business for a while now, and this is the first time she's had to do that. If a trainer is any good to their Pokemon, the Pokemon would react in that same way, I would hope. All of mine sure would." Along with his family's. And themselves. They were so overbearing, especially after the accident. Even Borje had to tell them to back off at one point. Even now, they were so overprotective.

But at least they were supportive. The way Jade had tacked on that last sentence made him think that it was relatives, if not the man's parents, that were the "certain obstacles". Well, hopefully he wasn't being too personal. "Do tell me if it's none of my business, since it really isn't, but was your parents those certain obstacles? How did you deal with that kind of criticism or dismissal of your passion?" Niky was lucky. His parents were in full support, along with the rest of his family, being full of music oriented people. His shift was gradual, just to see if he liked it, but soon became hardcore. Until just four years ago. Still...parental support, or support of any kind of family was important. And for those not already in the music industry in some fashion, already tough to break into with support.

So it seemed that Jade had to fight tooth and nail just to get any chance he could. In a way, that showed how resilient Jade was...

He couldn’t help but chuckle as he imagined the Larvesta on a pedestal. It made him think of the figurative meaning of putting someone on a pedestal but this time it was literal. ”Yeah I treat my Pokémon like the children I don’t have. We look out for each other,” he agreed. His Pokémon and his dream to be an idol meant everything to him, but his Pokémon would always take first place in his heart.

’So he hadn’t been as discreet as he thought he had been.’ The thought crossed his mind when Niky spoke. He didn’t really care who knew as long as people didn’t pity him for it. Besides it would probably show how resolute he was when it came to his dreams.

”Just my father actually, my mother was never in the picture. I didn’t at first I just fell into line with what my father wanted, I was bitter though and started to resent him. I got tired of trying to be someone I wasn’t so I left. I spent time traveling to clear my head and I guess to find myself. The traveling helped I ran into people who showed me kindness throughout my travels and I saw what it was like for people to support each other in times of need. To lend a helping hand. It gave me hope and I strived to be apart of it even if it was just my words that stirred up that feeling in people.”

Seemed Niky hit the nail on the head with his guess. While he did find it sad that the man never knew a mother, there was no pity in his blue-green eyes. Nor in any of the other judges or Borje's. It was this kind of open honesty that actually sets people apart. It was a good thing. And endeared him to Niky. Jade proved that he wasn't a simpleton or anything of the like. "Words can be more powerful than what people give them credit for. Whether it's verbal abuse or encouragement. Lyrics to a song or a theater performance can have similar effects. You'll be a good PR posterchild if nothing else. There's so little good spirits out there it seems, having even a second good person on the stage encouraging others may not just give you a strong base, but encourage others to just being the best version of themselves that they could be." The other judges agreed. Borje looked at Niky with water in his eyes at that last sentence.

"I'm going to be real with you. This isn't a garuntee that you'll be in. That you'll catapult yourself into the idol industry and make it big. But it wasn't just his opinion that mattered. Thankfully things got lighter after that. And just basic chit chat. Favorite Pokemon, infuriating customers and/or critics, good places to eat, and more mundane questions, and not just solely at Jade, but also with the other judges, Borje, and Niky.

Borje paid for the entire bill, and told Jade that they'll contact him later. After some discussion, and Niky reviewing the answers to the other two, he was in agreement that number ten and Jade were the mvps. Borje gave a fun suggestion that surprised even Niky. But it did have some merit. A small performance at a local event. One that was being hosted to raise money for the local Pokemon School. Since funding has been stretched thin with all of the disasters going on. So why not two performances to round things off? And maybe Niky ending things with a single of his.

The first person was excited, and Niky started work with them. The next day, Jade was invited to Niky's record store to be given the news and the chance. True to the blonde's word, Sol the Larvesta was on a pedistal, with a warning to not pet or shoplift her as she will set you ablaze. While there was a couple of other workers there, a Lucario was helping out as well, as was a Metang. A team of smaller Pokemon, namely a Larvitar and Bagon, was setting up displays and putting product up with fantastic precision and teamwork. Borje led Jade to Niky's office. "There's an event in a week and a half. One of the others that made it past the interviews is deciding on music and choreography, but it's also a two day event, designed to raise money for the local Pokemon School. I'll be working directly with both of you. Don't let my bad knee fool you, I can only do one idol performance a day, but I can still very much move with the rest of you. If you're cool with this, I guess you'll have some decisions to make. I can get started right away too." It would be good to see how both contestants worked in the environment. Even one as laid back as this one would be.

Well it was a relief they didn’t think it was to deep. Though he wasn’t sure if he just wanted to encourage performers, not that they others were dismissing him as being able to be an idol. Besides a lot of people took encouragement or nice words from him the wrong way. Not in a bad way but in the sense that they thought he was into them when he was just trying to be nice.

”Encouraging people or complimenting people often leads to me having to hurt them. With some people they think that means I’m into them when I was just trying to be nice,” he explained. Sometimes he wished he was ugly or maybe not such a pretty face. He definitely took after his mother appearance wise or so he assumed since he didn’t have many similarities with his father. Skin tone and height the main things he got from his father.

”It’s still nice to hear that you think I would be good at encouraging people though,” he commented. It meant his past hadn’t beaten him down. If he come out of that and could still have a kind word to give someone. His father while strict had also been fairly distant so he didn’t know much affection or how to positively interact with people after first.

Luckily the conversation moved on and he listened with rapt attention to what was said. ”Thank you, it means a lot for you just to take a chance on me. I won’t squander it,” he told them. He would make sure to show them that they were right in taking a chance on him, he wouldn’t let them down. He had come too far to backdown now.

After that the conversation lightened and the spoke about a lot different things. Soon enough though it was time to head out. The guy who had set everything up, Borje, paid for everything. He did his goodbyes, after getting told he would be contacted, before heading home.

A few days later with Nebula, his Absol, at his heels he made his way towards Nicky’s retail store. The Absol had been finicky the past few days so he had left him behind, usually he didn’t show his emotions but he had been in a mood the past few days. He had seemed over it this morning though so he had allowed Nebula to accompany him.

Finding the retail store wasn’t hard and he headed inside telling Nebula to wait outside. He didn’t think he would be to long and he knew he would feel better out in the sun. As he approached the former idol he took in their surroundings. Seeing the Lucario working made him think of Ace, his Riolu.

”My strongest points are my singing and dancing, I do know piano but I haven’t kept up with it in recent years,” he explained hoping that it wouldn’t be considered to similar to the other performer. ”I’m fine starting when you can, I have nothing going on.”[break] Niky Racz

Well...there was that. "Sounds like they read too much into things..." And just encouraging people wasn't what he was getting at. So maybe Niky was getting a little too deep. Nevertheless, things went on.

Jade mentioned his strongest points, mentioning the piano. "That's fine. You don't have to take up everything, shoot, for the first few years, I had proffessional song writers do that part. Or even be associated with an instrument. It wouldn't be until about two and a half years after I started that I got associated with a guitar of some kind for including more personalized bits in some songs. This one is going to be a quick duet cover of an existing title, along with choreography of your choice. Our's is on the second day, but I'll be able to spend the same amount of time on both of you. A very fast snapshot to an extent." Hopefully that clarified some things. It was basically the same as the tryouts, but with an added person and a bigger crowd. Niky could get the choreography part of it down quickly, it was just timing it with the tune and balancing the voice work with it.

"I have a full database here, do feel free to search for something you like. Don't be afraid to take inspiration from other dancers for the choreography bit. But also know that I will be there too, singing alongside you, dancing alongside you. So communication is important. Both when working with another artist or with your background dancers, if you have them."

The young man nodded. He was use to it. Use to people reading to much into something. As sad as that was. When he had still lived with his father he had just assumed it was his father’s money they were after. It hadn’t occurred to him until later that his looks was a huge factor.

When he mentioned to sticking to what he was good at he nodded. ”Yes I think I’ll do that,” he agreed. He would worry about the possibility of relearning piano or picking up another instrument when he had gotten started. And like he said not until he had had a few years.

”Do you have a song in mind?” he inquired. He wondered if it would be one of his songs or a song from someone else. He was a fan of most music but figured he would fit pop music better maybe rock as well. Though he didn’t think the other music styles would suit him very well.

If he had an idea of the song they would be doing it would be easier to figure out dance moves. Not that he thought the older male would leave him in the dark. He wondered if he was suppose to pick a song as well since he hadn’t said anything when he had first mentioned it. It didn’t really matter to him either way.
