The whole mining experience thing had been cool. It’d been a great way to take him back to his grandpa’s roots. [break][break]The way the miner’s hands felt around his—calloused and packed with muscles—reminded him of the day his grandfather had tried to show him a proper handshake. He’d been eight at the time and pretty sure the geriatric wonder had broken his hand.[break][break]

Better yet, it made for some killer photoshoots. Even if the coal smudges were fake and the pickaxe he held brand-spanking new. After a few mock swings, he’d even broken through a few rocks. Those action shots were a perfect way to try and connect Adebayo Holdings to the common man it once represented. Before pops had gone and poisoned a bunch of people, anyway.[break][break]

He winked at the guide as he turned to leave. “Nah! I’ll get myself back boys. I’ve got some ‘treasure’ to hunt.” After that, the CEO and his Pokemon entourage departed the tunnels. The walk to his car wasn’t too far. Definitely not something a fit young buck like him couldn’t handle. The same thing went for the sunny-side-up Gholdengo walking at his side.[break][break]

With the vest and pickaxe still in place, Oz thought he pulled off the guise pretty well. He didn’t. His boots were brand new and his designer jeans were completely free of dust. His hands, meanwhile, looked like they’d been freshly loaded. The safety helmet was also cocked to one side, not exactly regulation. The fact that he somehow had found a matching outfit for his specter pal was probably even more out of place. Especially with how the highlighter yellow bounced off gold.[break][break]

As he rounded a corner, he came face to face with another trainer. “Well, well.” He winked at Chip. His tone, as usual, was playful. “Looks like we’ve hit the motherlode.”

Despite everyone who cared about her’s best efforts, Cyg wasn’t the type to just lay down and heal. The bedrest was driving her nuts and she needed to be, like, doing something. But working in the garage was out because her right hand was still healing; working out was obviously out because she was broken beyond belief. Even laying in bed hurt.

So she needed some fresh air, she decided. A quick jaunt down the route would be fine. But that felt like quitting. Being only mildly uncomfortable felt like giving up. So she changed tactics and did what everyone with a broken ankle ought to do, and that was, you know, go mountain climbing.

Cane in one hand, other against the wall of the cave, she picked her way slowly through the half-dark of the mountainside; her Gengar bounced worriedly beside her.

When she heard the miner guy’s words, she paused-- she’d been so focused on not falling over and ignoring the pain that she hadn’t even seen herself come up on him.

“Is this-- are you cosplaying Zoolander right now?” she asked, one eyebrow incredulously raised at the scene in front of her.

His grin froze for a moment, then, faltered. “Zoolander!?” His hands darted self-consciously to his too-clean neon vest. “No. I’m obviously a miner back from a long day of, uhhh…” What exactly did they do all day? Digging and stuff, right? “Mining.” The Pokemon behind him couldn’t stop itself from chuckling. “Can't you tell?” He’d put a lot of work into making himself feel more relatable—acknowledging Gramp’s blood, sweat, and steel-toed boots.[break][break]

Only when his Pokemon prodded him, did he notice the cane in Cygne’s hands. Big blues widen, that juvenile mirth replaced with concern. Normally above profanity, he couldn’t help shouting, “Shit!” The jesting tone evaporated, the pick axe dropping into the soil. “Are you all right?” He gestured to a nearby rock, tossing his vest over it. “Take a seat!” As he pulled back, his eyes caught on two sets of eyes. Or, well, eight pairs of eyes. “We can grab a taxi down.”[break][break]

The Slowpoke earned a grin. His homeland had its fair share of these guys. Cute as the dickens, their vacant expression earned a place in his heart. But it was the weird, owl thing behind him that caught his attention. “Whoa, this thing is—” That smile shriveled as the Claydol began to glow. Its mouth made a strange garbled chirp. Then, it began ticking. “Huh.”[break][break]

Chippendale’s golden eyes widened. He shook his head, the coin hair tinkling. As his trailer turned to face him, he made an expansive gesture and mouthed the word BOOM. “Seriously!?” With a noise of alarm, Oz fumbled at his belt. Catching the ball as he dropped it, he chucked it half-heartedly at the Claydol's head.

“Mining?” Cyg supplied with a snort, seconds before he offered She didn’t know what this guy's game was but he definitely was not on top of it.

She immediately became more icy when he tried to encourage her to sit.

“I’m fine. I’m not an invalid.” Sure, her ankle hurt, and she was tired, but by god, she was not going to accept help from anyone. “Just recovering.”

The ticking Claydol time-bomb had Lisbet hopping back and forth from one foot to the other in fear until the guy put it safely in a Pokeball. The Gengar swooned in relief, turning to find a dumb-looking Slowpoke watching them.

Lis waved. The Slowpoke did nothing. Cyg rolled her eyes, grinning with affection, and tossed a Pokeball.

“So if you’re not doing a Zoolander bit and you’re clearly not actually mining, what are you doing down here?”

Ozni loved a handful of things above all else, and his grandfather was definitely one of them. It took a special 90-year-old to go out in a base-jumping accident. The younger Adebayo doubted his dad had even been up a mountain, much less jumped off of one. So, he took that single word as an invitation. [break][break]

“Yeah, mining.” He swept his arm in a propeller motion in the general vicinity of the mine. “That’s where we got our start” He didn’t make a move to specify who we was. He figured that’d be obvious. “My gramps about worked himself to death in a place like that, saving every penny he had.” As if just mentioning him deserved reverence, Oz pulled his helmet off. “Eventually, he saved up enough money to open his own paper mill. And Adebayo Holdings was born.”

He waved his hands idly. “Then came dad, a divorce, and baby Oz in a baby carriage.” Or, more likely, in a nanny’s arms. He doubted the maternal unit even knew how to unlock a stroller, much less push one. These days, he tried not to acknowledge their start in toilet paper manufacturing. Even the toothpaste and shampoo had way better optics. Today’s advertisement was pulling double duty—a new scent of men’s body wash and an anniversary special. [break][break]

At the snapping, Oz lifted his hands up—a universal sign of peace. “I didn’t say anything about you being an invalid. Anybody needs a break after climbing a mountain.” Right now, he was dredding the trek to the rendezvous point. At the talk of recovery, the CEO bobbed his head. “Guessing you got hit by one of those meteors or something? This place’s been a real ring top lately.” If he didn’t love the good PR so much, he’d have ran home ages ago.[break][break]

The Slowpoke’s appearance received a dorky grin. He’d always loved those pink pig-dog-otter things. They made for killer memes.

“I’m filming a commercial.” He sighed. “The old man really jacked up our iage.” The environmental disasters he caused often got him spit at. Then, of course, there was the supposed carcinogens and child labor stuff. And, somehow, Oz thought high-budget commercials would fix it. Next to him, the Gholdengo mimed a photo shoot, its fingers clunking together with a hearty thunk.

Attracted by the noise, a Duosion appeared. That thing made him think of mad scientists. It looked pretty hungry too. “Yo! Bud?” It turned. “Do you want to come with us?” It turned upside down, the orbs in its body swirling. “There’s science.” Chip nodded, his head resembling a golden bobblehead.

The Duosis had zero idea what was going on. It shook its head. Shrugged. Jiggled up and down. That looks like a yes to me. A ball thudded into its side. The little squelching noise it made was super gross. Oz loved it..
