GIDEON GRAVES had called on his ranger friend to help with a little sample collection. Given how his arm was still in a sling and his ribs still ached every time he shifted his weight, the professor was in no position to be wrangling Pokémon.[break][break]

Sure, he could have asked one of the interns to do it, but Ollie had been present and even aided in capturing one of the beasts standing before them: each in its own separate holding facility.[break][break]

Two of them were disturbing machinations resembling Pokémon. One was an ordinary DONPHAN whose temperament was typical of the species - calm unless enraged. This one already seemed on edge from being contained, however.[break][break]

"Let's start by taking blood samples from the two with functional circulatory systems."

why gideon had chosen him of all people to do it, ollie wasn't sure. he could've chosen someone smarter, like illeana reyes or Eva Morales. he could've chosen someone closer to him, like his little brother Gunner Graves.

[break][break] but perhaps there was something to be said for the close bonds of friendship.

[break][break] "anytime!" the ranger captain grinned, walking towards the professor. he'd grown rather accustomed to the space, now that he'd hung around gideon more often these days. he pretended it was because ranger work was just so busy in slateport, but really, ollie just liked his company. plus, it let him keep his mind off of other things.

[break][break] he grabs a very large syringe off a nearby desk.

[break][break] "this is it, right?" he asks, handing it over to gideon. when he moves, perhaps gideon would be able to see the bandages shift around his arm, or perhaps he would notice the bright purple bruise that was still healing on his face.

“It is,” Gideon confirmed, stepping aside so that Ollie could collect the syringe from the desk. The other man’s injuries didn’t go unnoticed, though he didn’t comment on them. It appeared that they’d both run into trouble after separating in the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]

“Do you know how to collect blood correctly?” Just in case he didn’t, the professor went over the procedure for his friend. Restrain the specimen, find a strong vein (usually in the ear for thick-skinned, large-sized Pokémon like DONPHAN), carefully insert the needle. Gravity and capillary action would do the rest.[break][break]

“I recommend starting with the Donphan. I have a feeling he’ll be a bit more cooperative…” Although the way he just huffed at the two men wasn’t very encouraging.

"nope," ollie said cheerfully, popping the "p" sound. ollie didn't consider himself exactly squeamish, but there was no doubting that Eva Morales had always been the sciencey one in his family.

[break][break] his eyes glimmered, and he flashed his friend a cheeky grin. his voice dipped an octave lower, teasing.

[break][break] "are you going to show me?"

[break][break] but GIDEON GRAVES was a man of words instead of action, so he told him instead. it seemed easy enough after it was explained to him, so he took the large needle in his hand and set about doing just as he was told.

[break][break] one strong arm wrapped around the donphan to hold it tight; the pokemon huffed and struggled, but ollie was stronger and managed to keep it still as the needle sunk into the pokemon's trunk vein.

[break][break] sure enough, second later, there was a vial full of blood that he handed over to the scientist.

[break][break] "what's next, boss?"

It would most assuredly present a bigger challenge to ollie morales.[break][break]

Where DONPHAN was only about three feet tall, GREAT TUSK was a whopping seven feet tall, meaning the beast dwarfed both men by at least a few inches.[break][break]

"Hm. This one might be a bit much for you," Gideon suggested, placing a finger to his lips in thought. [break][break]

"I can get another Pokémon to help you restrain it?"

It was either that or Ollie somehow horse-whispered it into compliance.

talk about huge.

[break][break] when GIDEON GRAVES explained that the next pokemon they needed samples from would be the paradox mon, the ranger captain hardly expected it to be as large as it was. but behind the walls of it's holding chambers, the great tusk undoubtedly had more than a few inches on it's predecessor.

[break][break] which, of course, presented them with a problem.

[break][break] "no need, boss," ollie said, with a flash of his charismatic grin. "i got it."

[break][break] a soft click sounded before his blissey joined them both. the adorable pink creature smiled up at the league scientist, just as ollie plugged his ears with two fingers.

[break][break] "alright, bubblegum, you got it!"

[break][break] sure enough, a SING unraveled forward and wrapped around the space. it bounced against the wall's of the enclosure, made to subdue the giant donphan for a moment longer.

Conveniently, all three Pokémon succumbed to the BLISSEY's dulcet, lulling song. Gideon himself was feeling a little sleepy, in fact, but he snapped himself out of it with a few small pats to the cheek.[break][break]

While ollie morales worked on the GREAT TUSK, GIDEON GRAVES entered the pen containing the IRON TREADS.[break][break]

"I'm not convinced this creature even has blood to draw out," The professor commented, edging closer to the odd Paradox Pokémon. He hadn't been able to get this close to the thing before.[break][break]

It was almost entirely mechanical in form — from the outside, it looked more robot than sentient, living being. Upon closer inspection, Gideon saw small, intricate tubing weaving into a metal carapace of sorts. He wondered if perhaps the creature's lifeblood was contained within these tubes.[break][break]

"Grab another needle and bring it over once you're done with that one."

[break][break] no blood? what the hell? what kind of pokemon had no blood?

[break][break] 'an alien,' his mind supplied helpfully, but ollie immediately stamped down that train of thought. he didn't like where it was headed. it reminded him too much of the ultra deep sea.

[break][break] where those things came from.

[break][break] anyways.

[break][break] ollie kneeled before the sleeping creature, holding the needle tentatively in his hand as GIDEON GRAVES had taught him to moments before. he winced as the blood was sucked up by the tube, his stomach feeling slightly queasy. he didn't know how Eva Morales did it.

[break][break] usually, the ranger had a strong stomach. growing up on a farm did that to you. but for some reaosn, there was something about the sight of blood in a tube that made him feel a little nauseous.

[break][break] when it was done, ollie grabbed another needle and walked over to the museum director. he handed over the other needle, hands brushing briefly against his friend's.

[break][break] "i think you should do this one, gids," ollie mumbled, eyes glancing at the remaining specimen. a crooked smile cocked his expression, glancing towards gideon. "you're the genius, after all."

Alien wasn't too far off, in all likelihood. [break][break]

These things — the Paradox Pokémon — were entirely foreign to their world. That much was becoming abundantly clear the more GIDEON GRAVES studied these creatures. He was fairly confident these samples gathered here today would serve to confirm his growing suspicions.[break][break]

When ollie morales eventually rejoined him, Gideon couldn't help but give the ranger an incredulous look. One of his arms was still being supported by a sling, after all.[break][break]

"That's a stretch, but if you insist,"[break][break]

He was good, but was he one-handed-blood-draw good?[break][break]

Yes. Yes, he was. GIDEON GRAVES had always been good with his hands. So, after Ollie passed him the needle — the fleeting contact between them noted but not acknowledged — the professor got to work.[break][break]

Seconds later, an odd, glowing substance filled the barrel of the syringe. [break][break]

"...almost certainly not blood." He commented again, shooting an almost too excited look Ollie's way.[break][break]

Arceus, what were these things?[break][break]

Gideon quickly packed all the samples away safely in storage. He'd run them when he was ready. In the meantime, it was time to see his friend out.[break][break]

"That should be everything I need for now." With that, he turned back to the ranger.[break][break]

"Thank you again for the help. I couldn't have done this without you." Not entirely true, but for some reason he felt compelled to stroke Ollie's ego a bit.
