To say that Summer Atreides was not feeling herself was probably the understatement of the year. Ever since her argument with Gunner Graves after their encounter with the wild SKELEDIRGE, their communication with each other had lessened to hardly even messaging each other.[break][break]

Of course they'd check in on one another. But part of her was just wondering if he was doing so because of their circumstances. Perhaps their time together was over now. He claimed it was because he was busy with work...[break][break]

Was it really the case? Gunner had always made time for her before.[break][break]

Summer sighed, running her fingers through her hair before she looked down at her phone. She decided that she needed to get out, to stop thinking about what was going on and work, and to let loose. So she had texted Callan Young.[break][break]

Because he was always there to comfort her in her times of need before. Maybe she could get some advice from him while catching up.[break][break]

She sat at the beachside, her bare feet kicking the sand as she scrolled through her messages. No new notifications, or at least ones she cared about. Summer held back a heaving sigh, until she looked up and spotted the familiar swath of light hair heading her way.[break][break]

"It took you long enough to show up," she teased him, standing up as she offered a teasing smile. "It's good to see you, Callan."

Taking Summer's teasing jab in stride, Callan's red eyes sparkled with mischievous delight, his smirk unflappable.

"Fashionably late is a style. You've tried it before." he shot back, the playful banter that they were once so familiar with coming back to him effortlessly.

Standing before her, remnants of their shared, heated history charged the air subtly. He stretched, his movements long and deliberate, a physical shedding of the residual heartbreak that clung to him.

His posture, assertive and familiar, seemed to punctuate the silence around them, the subtle tremors in his stance betraying a vulnerability he'd rather leave unspoken - a silent homage to the void Elinor Anderson's departure had carved within him.

"Good to see you too, Summer," he returned, the cool, steady timbre of his voice slicing through the tension. His gaze held hers, his scarlet eyes twinkling with an understanding that needed no words.

His hand swept through his stark white hair, an idle gesture that seemed to ripple with unvoiced thoughts. His chuckle, soft and warm, broke the silence. "We've known each other long enough for pretenses to drop, Summer," he voiced, leaning closer, his tone dipping to a level of intimacy only they knew. "If you're here to get a rise out of Gunner Graves, I'm not your man."

Her gaze remained locked with his, his words left hanging in the air, a silent testament to their history. "But if it's a genuine catch-up you're after, or an old friend's shoulder, then I'm all in." His gaze softened at his own words, the sharp, assertive edges melting away to reveal a gentler, more familiar warmth.

Summer let out a laugh, feeling genuine mirth as their usual teasing sprang forth. ”It makes for a dramatic entrance. I say it fits both our styles.”[break][break]

She’d missed him. When had the CEO and the rockstar last seen one another? They had both been caught up in their own little worlds, and somehow, she felt comforted having her friend agree to see her again.[break][break]

Summer’s eyebrow rose as he leaned closer, listening to his words. For a moment, when he spoke Gunner Graves’s name, Summer’s heart fluttered. Then it sank, remembering just how she felt she messed everything up with her defensive tone. The short messages, the inability to see each other now… maybe it was all her fault.[break][break]

”That’s not why I asked you to come here, Callan,” Summer stated plainly. ”I know you know the Summer of the past… and sort of now. The brat, the attention whore. But I wouldn’t do anything to hurt him. Not intentionally.”[break][break]

Her gaze fell for a moment, a moment of weakness before looking back to Callan.[break][break]

”And that’s what I want. I’d like to catch up with you, spend time with you. Perhaps not like the old days… but maybe in a new way.”

He settles back, the warmth of the wind seeping through the fabric of his clothes. He throws an arm over the back of the bench, his body turning slightly towards her.

"Alright, I'll bite. What's this 'new way' you're proposing, Summer?" His gaze stays fixed on her, expectant and genuinely intrigued.

Summer cracked a smile, comforted that he was willing to take this chance with her. To try something new. Not the usual one night stand and drunken splendor. She reached for his hand, taking it gently and leading him to the table where she had been sitting moments before he arrived.[break][break]

Callan followed her lead, settling into a seat across the table. As they walk, he gently runs his thumb against the back of her hand before they seat themselves down.

The menu laid before him remained untouched for now, the ocean and its rhythmic waves stealing his attention instead as he stares at the sundown.

A grin tugged at his lips as she spoke. His fingers drummed a rhythm on the table, an echo of the resounding waves. His free hand found hers, a cool contrast to the warmth of the evening.

"Sounds like a plan," he said, the corners of his eyes crinkled in amusement. He leaned back in his chair, the setting sun casting long shadows across his face. "Let's talk."

His hand released hers, reaching instead for the menu. His gaze flicked down, skimming over the list of dishes, though he didn't truly see them. His focus was on her.

"I won't say no," he added, closing the menu and pushing it aside. His eyes found hers again, a spark of challenge in his gaze. "But next time I'm paying." He chuckled.

A silence spread across the two as he considers his options, he calls a waiter over and orders the predetermined set. Steak was fine, as was the recommended red wine. He was uncomplicated in this regard.

"I heard you're a mother now." Callan began, as he began to nurse his red wine. "A big step, how are you feeling?"

A part of her missed it. The touch, the affection. Not necessarily from Callan, but from her own lover. She wondered when the next time he'd come to her home. Or he'd let her walk into his doors and accept her into his arms.[break][break]

Summer smiled at Callan, allowing him to hold her hand. It was cool, a striking difference from the warm air and sand beneath her feet.[break][break]

"Hmm, I suppose I'll allow that. As long as we agree to switch it each time."[break][break]

Summer, in turn, ordered sautéed vegetables over a bed of rice, her drink of choice simply water. It was boring in comparison to Callan's wine, which she stared at enviously.[break][break]

A small blush crawled over her cheeks, though she offered him a smile in response. "Physically, just tired and nauseous. Though I suppose that comes with the package." She laughed.[break][break]

"Emotionally? I'm a nervous wreck. I'm hoping everything goes smoothly this time. And that I'm a good mother. Everything happened so fast. Gunner and I weren't prepared at all, but he's been very supportive."[break][break]

Though she paused, her gaze flicking to the side hesitantly. Summer decided to push the thought away, instead addressing Callan. "How are things on your end? Are you working on any music at the moment?"

The corners of his mouth curved upward as her fingers twined with his.

"Sounds like a plan." he responded, his voice layered with an easy charm, a subtle nod to their playful banter.

His gaze, however, was focused on her face, observing the faint blush that spread across her cheeks, the sparkle in her eyes.

The words flowed from Summer's lips, painting a vivid picture of anticipation and hope. He knew it too well, the fear and terror, the light of a distant star yet to come.

"No one's ever a good parent. The best you can do is try to be," he murmured, his gaze shifting to the horizon, as if lost in the echo of a distant memory.

"When I first had Lio, my entire life changed. You see the world in their eyes, the universe. Then every time you look at another kid, you see the same reflection."

His gaze returned to Summer, his eyes hinting at an unspoken understanding. She had always been about herself, her ambitions, her dreams. And he wouldn't be the one to point out the inevitable change that came with motherhood.

His gaze shifted back to his plate as he began to cut into his steak. "I've made some music, but not much. Mostly tracks for myself, or people I'm close with," he replied, as if discussing the weather.

"Some productions, some ghostwriting." He paused, a fleeting shadow crossing his face. "I have my problems, but they'll be fine," he added. That one was best kept silent until it wasn't a problem anymore.

His thoughts briefly lifted, gaze refocusing on Summer. "So, what prompted the change? I thought we were both happy the way things were before." His tone was tinged with genuine curiosity, the unspoken question lingering in the silence.

Summer's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, her hand gripping a bit tighter to betray that emotion. But as Callan explained, it made sense to her.[break][break]

She knew there was no way in the world she'd be a perfect mother. Hell, she may not even be a good mother. But she'd be damned if she didn't try for this little one. She was going to try her hardest.[break][break]

"You're right. I suppose I'm more afraid of turning out to be like my father. I never grew up with a mother figure in my life. I had maids and ladies in my home, but they weren't mothers. So what I fear is I won't be able to be an actual mother, since it's been... I don't know twenty plus years since mine left my life."[break][break]

It was a known fact that Mrs. Prescott had died after knox prescott was born. But the circumstances of her true death weren't known to the public.[break][break]

Summer paused to sip her water and bite into her rice dish, swallowing a bit. It felt good, to get some of this off of her chest. She continued to eat, though she made eye contact with Callan as he talked about his production and music. She smiled, nodding. "I look forward to hearing anything new."[break][break]

Though she didn't press about the problems he claimed were fine. If he didn't wish to speak on them, it wasn't Summer's place to force him.[break][break]

She set her utensils down, wiping her mouth delicately before she spoke. "I am happy with how things were before. And, should things ever change... I wouldn't mind having it that way again. I don't plan on my future changing at the moment, but I want to clarify."[break][break]

Summer tilted her head, gathering the right words before she spoke. "I didn't want anyone to get the wrong impression. I've been seen as an attention whore much of my life. Settling down with someone, it hadn't been my style. Relationships, feelings... I've always found them fleeting." It made her think of Casey, when he had disappeared for months on end without word and how she couldn't bare to do that again.[break][break]

"I suppose I wanted to ensure that everything was clear and not taken out of context. Because I didn't want you to believe I was using you to get back at Gunner for something he didn't do. I genuinely want your friendship tonight. Your advice and your shoulder to lean on. Or even just to laugh and spend time with over the stupidest things we can talk about. You're someone I hold onto dearly, Callan, and I want you to know in more than just a physical way."

As Summer spoke Callan watched, observing her with a hawk-like focus as he took in every word, every gesture, every small detail.

When she was done, Callan's chest rose slightly. His exhale was silent. His hands, resting on the table, curled lightly into fists.

"All right..." He began, solemnity creeping into his voice. His gaze, unwavering, remained locked onto hers.

"I'm uncomfortable with an emotional connection. And now that you're with someone who you have a child with, I'm concerned that even a physical one is going to hurt not just you, but Gunner, and the child you're going to bring to the world."

His eyes didn't falter, didn't waver, holding hers with an unyielding firmness. His face betrayed no hint of the emotions that may have been stirring beneath the surface. "You're a mother now. And that means whatever you need to do, you no longer can consider just your own interests. Consider what's the best environment for raising your child with."

A pause, his eyes briefly dropping to the table as he gathered his thoughts. The quiet was filled with the clink of cutlery and the low hum of conversation from the other patrons, but within their little bubble, the silence was almost deafening.

His gaze flickered back up, meeting hers once again. "Does Gunner know you're having this dinner with me?" He began, a trace of concern lacing his words.

"I don't know what your relationship is with him. But now that you hold his child, aren't you someone that's special to him?" His words hung in the air, the question lingering like a shadow over their conversation.

Summer listened to him with furrowed brows. Of course, she understood that Callan would be uncomfortable stepping beyond something that they'd once had. But, at least in her mind, things between them hadn't changed much with what she asked for. Unless her judgement was clouded by something else she didn't realize was there.[break][break]

But what really struck a chord in her was his questioning of Gunner. Was he assuming that she was here against his back, to bring some sort of rise out of him?[break][break]

In the past, Summer would do that sort of thing for attention. But in a devoted relationship, and certainly one with Gunner, she wouldn't ever hurt him like that. No secret was held against him.[break][break]

Except the biggest one of all: her allegiance to team Rocket.[break][break]

"I don't know if I was clear or not when I spoke. I'm not asking for much to change, Callan. All I want is a friend right now," she reiterated plainly without added words or floral details.[break][break]

"As for Gunner, I don't lie to him." A lie. She's been lying the entire time. "I told him the truth. I was meeting you to catch up. He's an important person to me, and I wouldn't do anything to hurt him." On purpose.[break][break]

Summer sighed, taking her hand that had been stretched out and raking both of them through her hair. Suddenly, her drive to eat was gone. Maybe she'd just get the food to go. "I just wanted to see how you were and talk, Callan. There's nothing behind the scenes going on. I'm sorry for complicating things."

Callan absorbed Summer's words, nodding as he does.

Finally, he inhaled deeply, his chest expanding against the tightness. He knew it was a difficult conversation. Yet, it was an authentic one.

"I understand," Callan responded, "You can always count on my friendship, Summer."

He worked on his steak, cutting a cube and forking one into his mouth, but his focus was not on the food.

"It's alright," Callan's mouth tugged upwards in a smile. "I'm not upset, or offended."

His eyes, now softer, returned to his meal.

"If you wanna leave, I can handle the bill. I know this wasn't exactly what you expected." His fingers gently nudged the knife and fork together.

Summer could feel herself oozing stress. Whether it was from the conversation or her lack of seeing Gunner from work, or even hormones from her growing child, she did not know. But it was all consuming, threatening to push her over the edge. However, something in the turbulent sea of emotion seemed to calm after he spoke.[break][break]

She brought her gaze back to him, seeing his lips curled into a smile. The waters in her heart were still choppy, but somehow she didn't feel like she was going to drown like she had a moment ago. There was still weight pushing her down, but it was a bit lighter now.[break][break]

"Thank you, Callan."[break][break]

The truth was, Summer didn't want to leave. Leaving meant she had to sit in her thoughts again, alone and waiting. She shook her head, waving a server over and asking to pack her own things in a to go box for later.[break][break]

"No. I already said I'm covering tonight. But, do you want to take a walk when you're done?"

Stress was a tangible force, a disquiet that seemed to swirl around Summer. Her words, her gratitude, were a small relief that chipped away at that barrier, pulling a wider smile onto his face. "Of course, Summer."

Her proposition for a walk caught him off guard. His surprise momentarily broke through, before it was rapidly swept away by a genuine smile. "I’d like that," he replied, his tone warm, matching his expression. "A walk sounds perfect." He got his leftovers packed up alongside hers.

As he accepted the plastic bag, a notification from the encrypted League chat blinked on his device. His breath hitched, and he swiftly silenced it. It would have to wait.

"Let's head to the pier," he suggested, as they began their walk. Silence draped over them, a comfortable quiet as they moved side by side. Callan broke the silence, his voice holding a hint of vulnerability, "I've been having some trouble, lately. I'm sorry if I've seemed crass or blunt."
