Nomi was on a special mission to find a legendary God, but she was secretly most excited about spending some time with both of the Quinns for once. She'd worked with them separately, of course, but this was their first real mission together as...well, as a family.[break][break]
It was nice having something like a family. Her very own adopted older brothers who treated her with respect, made her feel safe, and sometimes even made her laugh - well, Temp was the best at that, of the two of them.[break][break]
She entered the New Mauville Power Plant with one Quinn on either side of her, a comically short figure in-between two taller ones. In front of her, Alpha floated silently and watchfully. Hopefully, the Unown-A would be able to sense whether or not the mythical Zapdos was actually present somewhere in the depths of its makeshift steel kingdom.[break][break]
It hadn't been hard to gain access to the Power Plant. Nomi had signed up for a Greater Mauville Holdings voluneer program that involved clearing out stray Probopass and Electrode to make space for a construction project. She'd taken the latest shift in the evening for maximum privacy.[break][break]
"Do either of you have any experience with this place?" Nomi asked the two men. The Power Plant was a maze of metal, wiring, and machinery. She'd really only explored it once, with Zev Harcourt, to gather parts and electric Pokémon for a device she was building. She'd barely scratched the surface of what lay dormant beneath its depths. And this time, she would have access to the restricted sections.

The charged air of the Mauville Power Plant raises hair along his arms, the dense population of electric types within clearly reaching problematic levels. That explained why Naomi Sato had been able to secure them a legal means of setting foot in the Plant, doing away with the need for espionage and overcaution.[break][break]

Still, paranoid as he was, Cillian's sharp golden gaze surveys every shadow.[break][break]

It shifts to Nomi as she speaks.[break][break]

"Minimal, but yes."[break][break]

He'd done grunt work here in the past, working under a former Head Scientist. How long ago those days felt, now.[break][break]

"It was far more Oscar's forte," he admits, sighing. "I hope he's enjoying a lovely vacation in Alola right now."[break][break]

The alternative was too grim to consider, for Cillian's grief has already reached capacity. Both Tempest Quinn and Nomi would doubtless sense the melancholy within him; he was quieter than usual, a certain lethargy to him.

"I talked to him last week. Got some hunk of a guy wrapped around his finger." Temp said, idly, as they made their way inside. His tongue prickled uncomfortably with the electricity here.[break][break]

Most of his best trained pokemon would be fairly useless here. Was the price of being a water type specialist. [break][break]

But brown eyes shifted over to Naomi Sato, edges crinkling as he smiled lightly. [break][break]

"Bro. I've never been here, like, ever. I'm relying on you two!" [break][break]

A sudden strike of lighting arcs from deeper in the facility. Hairs raise on his neck and he grits his teeth.

Nomi giggled as Temp smiled at her, his whimsical nature always a reliable source of encouragement. She hoped Oscar was living his best possible life in Alola, and not suffering too much from his mysterious medical condition.[break][break]
As a bolt of lightning momentarily illuminated a distant section of the power plant, Nomi couldn't help but notice the contrast between Cillian's quiet, moody melancholy and Temp's more upbeat optimism. She had always thought of the two men as opposites, and had long been intrigued by their dynamic. It made her curious about their history.[break][break]
After all, the woman she was currently wooing - if her efforts could even be summarized as such - was very much her opposite.[break][break]
"How did you and Cillian meet, anyway?" Nomi asked Temp while steering them in the direction of the lightning - a few more flashes helped her choose the right direction.[break][break]
An actual storm inside of the power plant was more than she would have expected from the run-of-the-mill electric types that could normally be found there. Could it be the sign of something more powerful nesting deeper within?[break][break]
"I've always wanted to know the story," she added, her tone curious.

Flashes of lightning illuminate the Plant's shadowy corners.[break][break]

"Spooky," Cil deadpans, not sounding spooked at all.[break][break]

Tempest Quinn seems far more ill at ease, judging by the set of his jaw. Rather than speak, Cillian squeezes his shoulder in support.[break][break]

Naomi Sato directs her question at his husband, but Cillian's sharp laugh echoes through the facility.[break][break]

"I hated him," the underboss says cheerfully, while allowing Temp to supply the finer details. "Funny how those things work out."[break][break]

As they venture deeper into the Power Plant, Cillian releases a Luxray. The shadow Pokémon yowls, claws digging against metal floors as they flex. A click of his tongue gives her permission to hunt; she's learning. Frost-coated fangs sink deep into prey.

Cillian Quinn recounts of hate. Temp just laughs, deep and loud, startled from his brooding and worry by Naomi Sato's sudden question. A flick of a pokeball as he answers her; a clumsy pawed Luxio follows after her mother. She shines bright- both for her yellow color and for the Illumina energy that brightens the area around her. Yet, she hurls lump of Toxic poison at whoever her mother can't take down fast enough. Weakening them for her fangs. [break][break]

"I wanted to fuck him so bad. We were at some Grunt meeting thing. I had just joined and he got pulled back in under the new boss. Standing by the only grungy window in the place, smoking and being all mysterious and cool. I was the only person without the sense to be afraid of him. Tried to chat him up." Temp grinned and elbowed Nomi lightly as he spoke. A stage whisper, as if he were sharing some secret. But his eyes flicked over to Cillian in mirth. [break][break]

"He only started to like me after he almost broke my jaw. I thought it was hilarious. Think I fell in love right on the spot."

Tempest Quinn's rambling candor in contrast to Cillian Quinn's blunt one-sentence answer amused Nomi, as if proving the entire point of how "opposites attract" their couple origin story was. She giggled when Temp nudged her, grinning as the tale was recounted from his perspective. It gave Nomi some hope regarding her own current crush; parker jones was nothing like her, and yet, a measure of real chemistry seemed to exist between them.[break][break]
"I would have loved to see that," Nomi exclaimed. "The brooding Cillian's reaction to your unabashed attempt to chat him up. Was he awkward?" She glanced at the Rocket underboss, crimson eyes sparkling. He was like a brother to her, so she didn't feel bad teasing him. "A broken jaw doesn't sound fun, though," she mused. Temp sure was a strange one if that's what it took to get him to fall in love.[break][break]
"You two are a good match," she concluded. "Cillian doesn't always show his emotions, but I know he adores you," she added, winking at Temp.[break][break]
Another arc of lightning - thicker this time - caught her attention and she looked up. A small electrical storm did seem to be forming ahead of them. Nomi squinted, trying to make out whether something was up there - something bird-shaped. Her skin prickled from the electric charge, and a small shiver traveled down her spine.[break][break]

Cillian shakes his head, correcting, "Didn't get pulled back in; I never left. Just got mistaken for a grunt, since I was no one special."[break][break]

The bitterness that may once have marked those words is entirely absent, now. He'd come far from the terrified lackey, now an underboss of the same organization that had once dismissed him as irrelevant.[break][break]

"Awkward?" Cil's laugh is sharp. "No. Just an asshole."[break][break]

Hair raises on his arms as electricity builds in the air, and Cillian stops in his tracks.[break][break]

"I do," he agrees, affirming his adoration for his husband, but his gaze is on the storm ahead. It was hard to tell what might be within.

From Naomi Sato's sudden comment to Cillian Quinn's confirmation of it, Temp's cheeks flame up a bright red. He fights the dopey grin from his face, embarrassed and pleased. It's silly! Temp knows that Cillian loves him, just as much as he loves Cillian, but somehow hearing an outside party point it out flustered him.[break][break]

Sadly, he doesn't have too much time to enjoy being a lovestruck little dolt.[break][break]

All at once thunder crashes before them. There is a surge of sparks and electricity that makes long dormant machines flicker onwards with force. They whir and scream in mechanical pain as a bright flash of light aims to blind.[break][break]

Temp has to grit his teeth and raise his arm over his eyes. Whatever was up ahead was... probably pretty fucking strong.[break][break]

The wise thing to do, had they not come in search of this creature to start with, would be to hide or perhaps get away.[break][break]

Temp, instead, take a few steps forward and takes out his phone. Waving it in front of him.[break][break]

And he calls out.[break][break]

"Hey! Zapdos? That you? Do you want to see some pictures Oscar sent me?"

Lightening crackled, temporarily illuminating the chamber they'd entered. Nomi's crimson eyes travelled upwards, and she gasped when she saw the creature roosting atop a massive generator: needle-pointed golden feathers sharp enough to cut through steel, a long and graceful beak, two narrowed beady eyes staring directly at them. All around the bird, an electrical storm raged, sucking energy out of the generator and into the God's body.[break][break]

"Zapdos," she breathed, awed.[break][break]
The humming whine of powerlines thrummed through Nomi, the entire space filled with a vibrating potential energy. The Head Scientist turned to Cillian and Temp, wondering vaguely if Zapdos really did recognize Oscar's name. Did it remember its former companion, a fledgling bond that might have formed into something more solid had Oscar not...? Well, there was no point in dwelling on that.[break][break]
"I think it's...charging," Nomi whispered with genuine fascination. "It's feeding on the electricity of the power plant. That generator is being drained, see?"[break][break]
Every scientist craved discovery; the "eureka moment" their drug of choice. Nomi had never encountered one of the legendary birds before: now was her chance to learn everything she could about it.

He was the vessel for a legend's power. It was not the first time he'd encountered Zapdos. Yet even still, as the air around them charges with electricity and he feels it like a tingle through his skin, Cillian is struck silent by awe.[break][break]

Zapdos was a magnificent creature, powerful and predatory.[break][break]

And they had stepped into what it likely considered its lair, which could prove a death sentence for the unworthy.[break][break]

Carefully, the underboss shows his palms and relaxes his posture.[break][break]

"It fed upon Oscar's generators, before."[break][break]

GMH had been a well-known power company in the region, and electrical power had attracted power of a different kind.[break][break]

"We're not here to ask you to leave," he assures the resplendent bird, who may well have suffered previous attempts to extract it from Mauville's prime power source. Mauville was not their concern. "We wanted to make sure you were all right."[break][break]

Though there were ulterior motives beyond, that much was true.

He sucks in a breath.[break][break]

Temp feels, for the moment, very silly. The hand with his phone almost falters.[break][break]

But Temp helped scrape barnacles off of Lugia's belly and she was far grumpier than this bird! At least, that is how he consoled himself! Chest puffing back up. Zapdos was powerful and mighty and all that, but he was sure it remembered Oscar. What was the point in any of the bonds between people and pokemon, all the talk of how amazing they could be, if this electric bird couldn't even remember that much?[break][break]

So, against his better judgment, Temp starts to pick his way closer. Over debris and other things that had been dislodged from Zapdos' wings.[break][break]

And he holds up his phone, standing on the tips of his toes so it may see.[break][break]

Pictures of Oscar Clayton, sent to Temp in friendship.[break][break]

"He was doing better for a while." A stray bolt, small, connects to Temp's arm. It tingles but he only winces. His phone gives a last buzz as it dies. "I haven't heard from him in a while, though." Temp wonders if Zapdos will mourn with this new knowledge. That Oscar didn't leave it behind for cruelty- he had went somewhere else to die.[break][break]

Since he's not been fried yet, Temp gives a smaller type of smile in offering to the bird.[break][break]

"Cil is telling the truth. We wanted to come check up on you."

Nomi watched, with a measure of apprehension, as Zapdos turned its gaze on Tempest Quinn. Its black eyes, like pinpricks of obsidian, seemed to regard the man and his phone, the electronic device held aloft before the bird like some sort of ritual offering. With a fizzle of static, the phone blinked off, clearly affected by the high voltage surging around them.[break][break]
At the mention of oscar clayton, Nomi thought perhaps the bird's eyes widened ever so slightly. It could have been a trick of the light, a result of the crackling lightening that flashed every few seconds, but Nomi had the distinct feeling that the legendary creature before them was...sad.
