Josh's match with Callan Young called into question not only his aptitude as a trainer, but his aptitude as a person. Had his homeland's dogma and the League's dogma truly blinded him? It was something that was difficult to let go of. The former rock star's views perhaps came with the intentions to make the Gym Leader more open-minded. That open-mindedness would be a requirement if he wanted to prove himself worthy of the title of Champion.

Stepping into the chambers of Melody Miro once more, Josh's demeanor was considerably different than it was when he entered the femme's chambers for their interview. It was as though the burden of his sin had been lifted. That was a burden the Elite Four member would have been aware of, as she was tagged in the email with the commutation of the Mauville Leader's sentence. "Morning, Melody!" Josh waved. With Twilight still on the mend, his best team couldn't be present, but the Pokémon he brought would have to do. Knowing the format would be doubles, Josh brought with him a slew of electric Pokémon that he used to defeat Johanna Joy .

As Josh devlin walked into her chamber, he'd hear the sounds of someone tickling the ivories of a piano accompanied by the pleasant sound of a water fall. As the chamber doors opened, he'd be able to enter and see the entire layout of her room immediately. [break][break]

It was a barren room, the sole piece of furniture this time was a piano, the reflective waterfall acting as mirrors for the entire room as Melody's reflection is repeatedly endlessly. "Oh! Josh you're here! Good morning!" she says as she stops playing the Piano and moves over to her side of the field. "Are you ready? We're doing a 2 on 2 with four pokemon. You can have the first move if you'd like if you pick your pokemon first. Or vice versa, I send out my mons first but I have first move." she offers with a little wink.

The tones of Melody Miro 's performance were calming for the Gym Leader, assuaging his nerves but not lulling him into a false sense of security. He hadn't seen too much of the Elite Four member's battles, other than that she had Cobalion. With Raikiri having speed comparable to legendary Pokémon, he wasn't too concerned about having a speed disadvantage. This time, he would be playing the opposite game: with his entire team draining electricity, it would enable Josh to strike fast and hard while still being able to fight in the long game. His Lanturn's presence made attacking with ground-types complicated, as well. It was good enough to defeat Johanna Joy pretty decisively. He crossed his fingers that it would hold today.

As Josh took his position in the trainer's box, he rolled the Poké Balls containing his Jolteon and Lanturn toward the arena's nearest body of water, the electric-types' saddles removed. If Melody looked closely, she would be able to notice evidence that Josh rode them regularly. "Hmm, last year's Worlds format with no team preview? Works for me." The Gym Leader's heartbeat accelerated as the scoreboard, including a rather generous match timer, lit up. "As much as we've worked together, I don't think we've seen each other battle much. I think this is going to be a close match."

She corrects him. "Oh! I've watched a lot of your battles!" she says with an unnerving smiley expression. "Whenever I watch someone's journey, I make it a point to be discrete and watch and study them. Their battles, their pokemon, their rhythmn. It's an unhealthy obsession of mine." [break][break]

She grins "You really like electric types, a natural counter to my water types. It'll be a fun match that's for sure." She says as she puts up a finger as she spots his Jolteon and Lanturn. "OOooooo the Jolteon from before? Let's see how much you've grown." she says as Melody looks into the air lost in thought for a moment of who to pick. She then makes her choice. "Alright, I'm ready!" she says as Melody lobs two pokeballs into the air as her choices seemed a bit unexpected. An Alolan Marowak and a Chatot. [break][break]

She snaps her fingers and the piano begins to play. [break][break]

"First move is yours Josh. Show me your progress." she grins as Melody's entire demeanor changes as a passion and determination fills her eyes "I WILL be taking you down josh, your journey ends here!"

The piano piece that accompanied the start of the battle was exactly the kind of music Josh loved listening to: musically intense, weighty, and sounding like whatever event it dramatized was life-altering. A clash of swords for the ages... or in this case, a clash of Pokémon. Callan Young had handed Josh the most humiliating defeat of his tenure as a Gym Leader: a Flawless Victory. Not once had he even managed to land a blow that left a lasting impact. His only hope for getting the rematch with Entei he wanted... was to have the other members of the Elite Four get him into shape to rematch Callan, the Austere.

Josh matched Melody's intensity, remembering the former Lilycove Leader's words. Anger wasn't a bad thing when properly harnessed. It was all about walking that fine line between using it as a rallying mechanism and said anger causing harm to those around him, much like it did to Eris. He still had twenty-one long months to finish his challenge. How hard could it be to win five battles in twenty-one months, after all!

"Call it a lucky read," Josh laughed at Melody's assessment of the Pokémon matchups. "And I fully intend to use that luck to take you down. Keep up with us... if you can." The smaller battle court, this one being regulation size, did put a cap on just how fast the Jolteon could run. He was far more skilled than when he first became Mauville's Leader, but Melody was also on her home turf.

The ghostly Marowak was clearly the problematic Pokémon of the two, rendering most of his team's non-Electric attacks useless. She would likely see a HYDRO PUMP attack on the Alolan Marowak coming, and withdraw the fire-type for a different Pokémon. The past Josh would have fallen for such a trap. Instead, Illumina's natural lantern blinked like a strobe light, attempting to induce delirium in the phantom with her CONFUSE RAY. The Gym Leader wasn't going to drop offense completely, though! Blinky lunged toward the center of the battle court and DISCHARGED a sphere of electricity that expanded in a large area around herself, her battle partner unharmed as she drained the electricity around her.

His pokemon make the first moves and Melody's team jumps right into action, Chatot ducks behind the marowak in a panic as the Alolan pokemon extends his bone club outwards as it's LIGHTNING ROD activates, shielding the pair from the onslaught. However, due to having to shield chatot from the attack the Marowak falls under the influence of the CONFUSE RAY [break][break]

"We're gonna start off strong Chatot!" She calls out as Melody grabs her TERA ORB AND TERASTALIZES CHATOT TO NORMAL TYPE. "Iago Sonata! Marowak duet!" she calls out as alolan marowak TRIES TO USE BONEMERANG (Less than a 33 means that he hits himself in confusion instead. [break][break]

Chatot starts to shine with a grey light as the TERASTALIZE BOOSTS IT USING BOOMBURST Alolan marowak is naturally spared the effects of the ear piercing shriek thanks to it's GHOST TYPING Josh's pokemon, however.

From the word go, Melody Miro had proven why she was a standing member of Hoenn's Elite Four. Not only was her team swift to act, she had the mental skills to out-anticipate the Master of Faster. His lack of familiarity with the species' ghostly variant caused him to make a critical mistake that the she may never let him recover from.

The Gym Leader had been around his friend Shalin Nariya long enough to know what a normal-type Terastallization meant. He instinctively shielded his ears from the painfully loud sonic explosion, the skin of both his Pokémon visibly rippling. Blinky was swept off her feet and nearly past the out-of-bounds line, Illumina beached next to her and a sitting Ducklett for any attack headed her way.

Neither one of them were out of it yet, though! While both of their bodies were dotted with red bruises from their innards being rocked, neither were going to give up. The presence of the electricity-draining Marowak compromised Josh's strategy, which revolved around Discharge and Volt Absorb. Illumina had some versatility about her, but the Jolteon was all-in on the strategy. Instead, she would make a WISH for Illumina's well-being.

As much of a threat as the Terastal squawking bird was, that Marowak was a bigger problem. And if electricity didn't work, he was going to bring the flood. With the water-type being beached, she would only have one shot at it too. Opening her jaws wide, Illumina expelled a beam-like surge of white water toward the Marowak, the HYDRO PUMP Josh originally wanted to order.

The bonemerang goes wide as it completely misses Josh's pokemon and instead hits her own marowak on the head dealing damage to itself. [break][break]

Melody winces but thankfully it seemed like no permanent damage thanks to it's thick boney helmet protecting himself...but it did hit himself pretty hard. The marowak tries to shake it off but a hydro pump that was well timed didn't give it a chance to really recover. [break][break]

The Marowak tries to gather itself as Melody sees jolteon using a wish to try and restore the lanturn's vitality. She had to act quickly " Nice try Josh but it seems like you didn't learn your lesson last time! Chatot! Sonata! Marowak, requiem!"[break][break]

The NORMAL TERA TYPE Chatot uses BOOMBURST again as the sound waves assaulted Josh's team again and Melody's marowak, despite it's low health begins to spin it's fiery bone in a circle as it winds it up and uses SHADOW BONE, launching the attack towards his LANTURN [break][break]

Josh had become quite the strong trainer since Melody battled him at his Gym. He was not without weakness, though, and one of his weaknesses was his predictability. He was so all-in on speed as a weapon that, with how famous he was for it, it was all too simple to counter his battle style if one knew what they were doing. Melody had spent so much time with Josh, battling both against and alongside him. She likely knew the best way to combat a blistering fast team was to use area attacks. Jolteon were fast as lightning, but even the quilled electric-type was not outrunning the speed of sound. Not without a Z-Move, anyway. Blinky was on the short list of Pokémon to be caught his Gym's move.

"Not if I have anything to say about it! Blinky, get under it with a QUICK ATTACK!" Josh retorted, the Jolteon disappearing in an extreme burst of speed. While it would have blinded most trainers, Mauville's speed-crazed Leader was well aware that Melody, too, could follow it. Zipping next to the idol's Chatot, Blinky would attempt to rake at the bird with her claws before being flattened by the small bird's outburst. Illumina, too, suffered a similar fate.

It was clear Josh's usual Doubles strategy was one Melody was prepared for. His focus on the battle shifted away from winning and toward gathering as much information as possible about Melody's Pokémon. They would surely meet again later in the year. He had saved two of his most powerful Pokémon for the end, though: Resheph and Raikiri. Hurling their Poké Balls into the center of the battle court, the Dragonair and Zeraora let out battle cries mimicking their trainer's heated emotions. Not holding anything back, the blue and white serpent's AQUA TAIL covered her body in a liquid veil. She turned herself into a living whip, lashing toward the fire-type.

The alolan marowak braces for impact, already battered and bruised from the earlier attacks he flops onto the floor as the flames on the ends of his weapon go out instantly. Melody nods her head silently, she had expected him to come back with a quick counter attack. [break][break]

"Saw that coming. Come back Marowak." she recalls as chatot uses PARTING SHOT onto the Zeraora to weaken it as Melody grins. "Nice job Josh, you smashed my Rythmn, but like any good artist we roll with it. The show must go on!" she shouts as she tosses out two new pokemon. [break][break]

"A zeraora huh? Well let's see how he handles this then." she says as Melody unleashes one of her own special pokemon, She sends out a Smeargle, who seemed by all accounts...normal? In addition to that she sends out one of her more recognized pokemon, Lapras. "Smeargle, Accelerando." The smeargle takes his paint brush and draws in front of him emitting a paint like texture that envelopes his body and shines as he uses TAKE HEART to boost his STATS.

The Chatot's PARTING SHOT left Josh in big trouble. With only two Pokémon left, Raikiri would not be at full strength for the rest of the battle. The drawback to Josh's battle style was if he didn't land his decisive blow early, the match was liable to slip from his fingers. The longer the battle went, the less likely he was to win. He had to end it now. Well, not end it, but he was making his big move now.

He had done his homework. While not a consistent ace, that Lapras was one of the singer's strongest Pokémon. The Smeargle was scary, given Melody's presence in the AQUA Initiative. The species seemed to be popular with those who had befriended the gods. It was an unknown factor. "Plasma Paws, Raikiri!" Compensating for its lowered strength, Josh ordered his Dragonair to follow up with a strong attack of her own. Lowering her horn, she swished toward the Lapras in a DRAGON RUSH, aiming to gore the adept swimmer.

The lapras was an interesting choice against Josh's team. She knew he favored primarily fast Pokémon who could out maneuver their opponents so it's why she had chosen these Pokémon to face off against him. The attacks both collide with her Lapras and at that very moment, the previous song stops and Lapras's cries fill the empty noise as it tanks the hits head on. The electricity crackles over it's body but Melody was just getting started with her song. [break][break]

In the momentary silence between the pause and the new song starting Melody's Lapras gleams with energy as she starts to power up a counter attack as she MEGA EVOLVES her lapras. [break][break]

SHE BEGINS TO SING HER NEW SONG, FLEETING LULLABY as the lapras grows in size and the beat drops and the lights in the room transform into blacklights. "Fight back! G-MAX RESONANCE." she orders as Lapras creates a massive ball of ice and aims to fire it at the zeraora. [break][break]

Regardless of if it hits zeraora or misses, the ball of ice would shatter upon impact, scattering countless ice crystals into the air creating an AURORA VEIL on Melody's side of the field. Afterwards she'd give an order to her smeargle that was left alone, "Cadenza." she orders smeargle as the pokemon starts to doodle in the air a RED CANNON WITH BLUE DOTS as it unleashes a blast of STEAM towards the Zeraora in an attempt to burn the creature with STEAM ERUPTION. It was clear that she perceived him as the bigger threat at the moment.

RESONANCE was a defensive maneuver Josh was more than familiar with, thanks to his many Ranger excursions with Julia Davis . He was not punching through that with speed alone. He needed raw power, and he had raw power that used the Zeraora's speed as fuel. Though many who owned Zeraora considered Plasma Fists the rare electric-type's ultimate weapon, Raikiri was raised differently.

The STEAM ERUPTION was completely different; it was an attack Josh had never seen before. While he knew Smeargle could use their painted tails to mimic any attack, even the Great One's Sacred Fire, this one caught him off guard. The beams of scalding water vapor flew toward Raikiri. "AGILITY, Raikiri! Resheph, DRAGON DANCE! Start building your speed!" The Gym Leader's timing was too late; by the time Raikiri could react to Josh's command, lunging at speed even his trainer had a hard time following, his rear legs had already been engulfed and singed. It was a glancing blow, but enough to leave him in range of a follow-up if the opportunity presented itself.

Melody's eyesight had been good enough to follow Josh's speed the last time they had met, right when the Gym Leader had opened his facility in Mauville. Since then, his team had become faster. Much faster. That speed would be put to fantastic use, as he had a new weapon that Melody had not yet seen. Instead of confusing her Pokémon with strikes too fast to follow, like he had in their previous meeting, he was aiming to end the battle with one decisive blow. If Melody had access to Josh's team sheet as part of the Elite Four challenge, she would see the impending Electro Ball coming.

His Z-GLOVE's crystal was still glowing, too.

She sucks on her teeth, the move had been mostly avoided, only barely being able to touch the Zeraora's leg. "I see now why so many people look for a zeraora like yours." she comments as his powerful fists and legs had made this battle a bit more difficult for her. [break][break]

Both of his pokemon began to look to increase their speed, agility and dragon dance huh? If only she had chosen her Magearna. "Smeargle! Decelrando! Lapras follow up!" she orders as suddenly the water from the waterfalls in the room begins to freeze, the temperature drops drastically as smeargle uses a stolen power, one unbeknownst to melody that he'd be familiar with, GLACIATE. [break][break]

She pilfered it during her venture to save rayquaza with Eva Morales. In addition to the GLACIATE, Lapras uses FREEZE DRY to assist with the attack as she was looking to make it harder for Josh's pokemon to move as they faced an onslaught of ice and harsh weather.
