The Quaestor Lucis is not the only ship adrift in this sea, it seems. Navy couldn’t believe the report when it first crossed his desk. A passenger liner that sunk over one hundred years ago off the coast of northern Hoenn appeared, with no rhyme or reason, moored within a large cavern of the Ultra Deep Sea. The bottom half of the ship is submerged in a strange green fluid. Day by day, it sinks into this green lake.[break][break]

People want to see what’s inside before it’s gone for good. Navy and a scientist hired by the League, Alba Evovae, are on the case. Two souls prepare to venture deeper into the depths, taking shelter at a base established by Navy, Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, and Colton Boothroyd earlier that month. It’s already proven a sanctuary and safe haven in these strange still waters.[break][break]

The vegetables are growing nicely in the garden, too. Navy takes a few home-grown tomatoes, slices them up, and makes sandwiches for his new colleague and himself. Sliding a small plate down across the wooden table, he takes a seat and sips on a cola.[break][break]

“Man. To think, the Galactic showed back up after all this time.” A fan of history, the prospect excites him. He knows horror waits for them beneath the decks, but they’ll be fine. They’re only scouting it for a bigger team.[break][break]

“You got everything you need, Professor?” It’s amusing to call a younger man by that title. Navy treats the man with due respect. “We’re just scoping it out today – making sure there’s nothing there that’ll kill a bigger team.”[break][break]

There’s something ruthless about this strategy. Send in one highly qualified but ultimately expendable trainer, Navy is no avatar, and one scientist eager to climb the egghead ladder, use them as a canary before the big guns swoop in.[break][break]

“Hope they’re paying you a pretty penny for being here.”

Technically speaking, Alba was a doctor, not a professor. He had been through the rigmarole of education, true, but he'd never actually taught any empty-headed, wide-eyed students, ready to be ground down by the gears of the world. Still, he wasn't going to nitpick the man on academic terminology. A title was a title, especially when he was trying to seem as normal and law-abiding as possible.[break][break]

'Professor' just sounded more… League, somehow. A professor welcomed people to the world of Pokémon, helped young trainers begin the most formative years of their lives. A doctor pored over research documents with a hunchback posture, the light of a computer screen glinting ominously off their glasses into the gloom of their laboratory.[break][break]

In reality, the scientist wasn't either of those things. …Well, he did do research in the dark, if his mind kept him awake at night, but the hunchback posture was a rare occurrence. And he hadn't handed any rare Pokémon to children, but… similar things had happened. Was he both, then? Some transcendent doctor-professor, wielding the best of both worlds?[break][break]

A mystery for another time. There were more pressing things to investigate.[break][break]

"They're paying me enough," Alba replied with a shrug. As he spoke, he finished gathering the tools needed for this trip. He was packing light; they weren't going to be in there for too long. "Though with a job like this, I'm earning more than just money."[break][break]

"A whole century… For one hundred years, this has been just another lost ship among many… only for it to show up light years away from our planet… What do you think about that?"

“Think the world’s getting a little bit crazier every day.” He says with a grimness that will always lurk beneath the cheer. “Guess it’s just another day in Hoenn. Dunno how it ended up here. That’s why we have people like you, huh?” And, once more, he’s right as rain. Rangers have finished outfitting two Pokémon for the journey. One is a Flygon, Tanwyn, Navy’s first dragon type. [break][break]
The other is Ironsides, a Skarmory perpetually too old for this shit. Unfortunately for the iron bird, he has a trainer neck deep in the stuff. It’s always something with Navy. It’s been one thing or another for a decade. If Pokémon could retire, Ironsides would be perpetually 2 days away from retirement. [break][break]
“These two will get us there in one piece. Can’t fly too high or else it’ll piss off the Nihilego. Smell any chalk and we high tail it away. Interdream mist exists in little pockets all over the place.” [break][break]
Just another day. A walk in the park, a little stroll. Navy boards whichever one Dr. Evovae doesn’t want and takes off. [break][break]
“Oh! And word to the wise: this place is hell on your heart. Hope you don’t have a condition.”

"Gives us something to do, at least." He plays it off more nonchalantly than he feels. There's always something down every rabbit hole, even if they wind through the soil and ruin the garden. A few ruined flowerbeds are worth that kind of adventure.[break][break]

This is probably why he's not the law enforcer of the pair. Even if he wasn't part of a vast criminal empire, upholding rules and regulations would never have gone well for him.[break][break]

"I should be fine— it's kept on ticking so far without any problems. I've seen more than you might expect." He's smug about that, in a playful kind of way. Beyond that, the edges of those last few words are tinged with something too big to fit into the life of a man in his twenty-somethings.[break][break]

He chooses the Flygon. It's not a particularly meaningful choice; there just happens to be a melody in its wingbeat that he enjoys.

“Tanwyn, huh? Good choice. Raised her with my brother.” Tanwyn slumps down, allowing the scientist to board her. There’ll need to be minor adjustments made to the saddle, what with the differences in height and build between the two men, but they won’t take long.[break][break]
Ironsides is a tough old bird, for a bird in his middle ages. His eyes forever drift away. He is perpetually too old for this shit, but he answers Navy’s calls. He comes with a roll of his eyes and a disgruntled sigh, but he comes.[break][break]
“She’s a little bumpy, but it should be fine.” Whether or not that proves true depends on Alba. Either way, Navy tosses the man a short range headset and takes off. Without it, talking while riding is almost impossible.[break][break]
“Kinda wonder what you’ve seen. Call me nosey. Where’d the League find you, anyway? Hear you come highly recommended.”

It always feels a little foreign, using someone else’s Pokémon, but they take off just fine. The low hum of Tanwyn’s wings undercuts Alba’s voice as he talks through the radio.[break][break]

“‘Highly recommended’? I didn’t know they liked me that much…” There were people far more prolific than him, making waves bigger than he was, in science and shadier things besides. On the other hand, he wasn’t a complete unknown anymore… maybe someone had put in a good word.[break][break]

“Well, I moved to Hoenn a couple of months before the Battle of Dewford. I'm from Opelucid, over in Unova.” It shows in his voice. The Opelucid accent tinges the Unovan with a kind of timelessness; rural and urban, all at once.[break][break]

“Studied back in my home region, and that was enough to get a job in Mossdeep… It's not all that exciting a story, unless you're interested in reading a few hundred pages on the likelihood of extraterrestrial life. How about you? How did you end up diving for long-lost shipwrecks?”
