His words made sense. They filled the emptied spots flawlessly, spilling seals in cracks she'd almost left forgotten.

The more he spoke of it, spinning a tale she held no ability of disproving, the more she leaned into his words. They came with sudden spurts of electricity through her veins. A thrum of encroaching ensorcellment.

"I think so, yeah," she nodded in agreeance, "I always had a strange feeling about Chi-yu during our trips to the borders. Like I was being pulled toward it, sometimes without realizing it."

Memories of their frequent trips flashed across her mind. One of which had nearly caused her death.

"After we fell off the charizard, I remember us talking."

About the jade, if she recalled correctly.

"I don't know about what. My memory is still a bit hazy then onwards."

She paused, thinking to herself with noticeable difficulty. It rose in the way her body curled inward, shielding herself, and the tune of which her following words spilled out. Loosened by the drawl of hope, of better tomorrows shared under similarly beautiful night skies and quiet beaches, they came with rare showing of forthright candor.

A quality she bathed with thick showings of vulnerabilities only expressed between the safeties of their conversation.

Matias was an enigmatic force; a bundle of honeyed lies, twisted truths, and promises entangled with glimmers of hope. Enough of it that, despite all that happened and all that you know, a part of you reaches out for it, ignorant to the capricious dangers lurking beyond the horizon.

The tale he spun was a believable one. If it had been crafted, Penelope wouldn't be able to tell.

A quiet astonishment overcame the councilwoman. Her head looked to be reeling, not quite sure what to make of the revelations he presented to her, nor the implications each one bared. Like individual fangs, their truths tore into her skin, one by one, until blood bathed her expression in hues of mourning regret.

Her gaze searched for answers in the licking flames. None came.

Despite the suspicion that threatened to leak through her gaze, Penelope kept herself still, allowing his explanations to sink in and act as a live experiment to prod and dissect.

"I don't know what to say to that." Admission breathed out disbelief. Slowly, instinctually, her fingers found themselves tangled in the scarlet ribbons of her hair. Raveling and unraveling strains, as she has always done when nervous.

A similarly dry chuckle echoed off her lips, a mirror to the deepening sadness he felt.

A brisk breeze combed through her scarlet hair, pushing away its swaying thread from her eyes. She tucked one piece behind her ear.

The admission came as a muffled shock. Reeling from the dizzy spills that threatened to swim, the councilwoman allowed herself to smile, the brightness of it's flash marking the genuine nature of her reaction.

For all that has happened, she never grew tired of hearing those simple words.

Her mouth opened, as if to breathe life into words that were never fully formed.

If she could replay the words he spun over and over again, she would. For as godly as Chi-yu's powers made her out to be, the councilwoman still fell victim to the same human follies that riddle tragic plays and pieces of literature. She was absolutely enthralled by her own poison.

Locking their fingers into an entanglement of twisted dreams and ignored uncertainties, her eyes traced the licking shadows trailing down his chin. The others - if they were still there - would be far too distracted to make notice of such small intimacies. So, for once, she allowed herself to indulge in this rare night of delicate sweetness kept between them.

The question was riddled with issues. Mainly, the fact that Penelope had no way of discovering the beginnings of her answer. Far too much of that thread had been muddled in confusing pangs of emotions.
