“Huh?” That question just kind of confounded her in the moment. She had expected a few possible questions here, even quite a few rather difficult ones. But instead of delving further into what she did not really want to talk about, Jo instead asked about something that no one had ever cared much about. ‘What can I do for you?’ was a question that Megan had asked maybe a thousand times over the years. But not only had she never meant it this way, she herself had not been asked that, ever.

It took a good few dozen seconds for her to remotely come to grips with it. “I…I don’t quite want to acknowledge the possibility of being stuck here for much longer, if I am being honest,” she replied first, as if she still needed a bit more time to figure the other part out. Looking down, there was a bit to work through until she could actually offer the honesty that Jo deserved.
“I…I guess I don’t need anything too fancy. Just stay with me, alright? I probably should just take you up on the other and move in here…”

Johanna waited patiently. Megan needed time to consider the question.

Johanna gave Megan a small empathetic nod as the young woman began to speak. She accepted the words being given even if she had a feeling there was more to it.

But the words that did come after surprised her. But that did not stop her from acting. She reached for Megan’s hand, intent on giving it a reassuring squeeze as she said. “You definitely should.” She stated, but continued before Megan could say something. “But don’t worry Meg, whether you do or not, I am not going anywhere. I will stay here with you.”

That was…all she could ask for, right? On multiple levels, really. More could not be expected anyway in this situation. And really….this should be enough, right? Megan was not a greedy person. And she could tell that the offer was genuine. It felt warm, in a way, the kind of warmth she had not felt since moving out of home back in the day. It reminded her of a warm autumn breeze for some reason…

She found herself blushing and scratching the back of her head again. “Thank you. I mean it. But look at me, being such a wreck and everything.” In her usual way, she tried to laugh it all off. Did not quite work this time, though. It was rare for someone to put up with her at her lowest. Even rarer for someone to genuinely care about her.
She exhaled deeply. “I kind of feel like I am imposing on you in a way. Yes, I know I am not. But if there is anything I can do for you in return, please tell me.”
