Back home in Snowbelle City, Julien enjoyed no greater pleasure than the hunt: the anticipation of what one might find deep in the woods, the chorus of baying dogs, the power of his Rapidash between his legs. And nothing tasted sweeter than the conquest at the end of a long endeavor.[break][break]

Pokémon catching was not dissimilar. While he did not have all his family's resources at his disposal, he'd brought his personal collection, at least. And he did not need much more than that for this short trip to Route 111.[break][break]

Julien rode his Rapidash, Caesar, through the tall grass bordering the road. His Fletchinder, Severa, perched on his shoulder, her keen eyes seeking prey. But what they did not expect to find was another traveler.[break][break]

He did not raise his voice to shout a greeting. Instead, he waited until Caesar drew near to the stranger, a man Julien did not yet recognize.[break][break]

"Good morning," he said in greeting, his tone polite but otherwise aloof. He fully intended to continue past, as well, but something about the other man seemed familiar — something he couldn't quite place.

Astride his GLASTRIER and accompanied by an airborne, unusually-colored TALONFLAME, Barnaby approached Julien Demassieux with an equally indifferent countenance.[break][break]

"Good morning." A mirrored exchange as the two men rode past one another. In any other circumstance, that would have been the end of it.[break][break]

Much the same as the other rider, BARNABY FINCH wasn't looking for paltry conversation so far off the beaten path. He came to places like this for solitude and respite, away from the myriad duties of his everyday life.[break][break]

However, something about the stranger caught his eye. [break][break]

"Wait a moment," He beckoned, reining his mount back around toward Julien.[break][break]

Barnaby never forgot a face. Doing so could have dire consequences in his line of work. But a name... well, in this instance, it was escaping him.[break][break]

"You look quite familiar to me."

Julien pulled on the reins of his Rapidash to bring her to a stop. Confused, he turned in his saddle to look back at the other man, an eyebrow arched in his direction. "Do I now?"[break][break]

The other man looked familiar, too, but Julien couldn't place it. The ways his nose, mouth, and eyes were shaped all reminded him of another person he had recently encountered, but the answer remained outside Julien's grasp.[break][break]

"There's something familiar about you too," he said, his Kalosian accent an obvious indication of his origin. "Have you been to Lumiose City?"[break][break]

Severa took wing at that moment, honing in on a target Julien could not see. With a precise QUICK ATTACK, she dragged a Litleo out from a patch of tall grass. Julien threw a Pokéball to capture the startled cat.

That narrowed his options considerably. Given the man's approximate age — mid-thirties? — and his more posh-sounding accent, Barnaby surmised that they likely traveled in similar circles back home.[break][break]

"I was born there, actually." Already a hazy memory of a smoky Gentlemen's Club was resurfacing in Barnaby's mind. Cigars, bourbon, billiards, cards, women. All these things juxtaposed against the stranger's face made him more and more uncannily familiar.[break][break]

"Are you a member of the Chevalier family, perhaps?"

Julien suppressed the urge to frown with disdain at the mention of the Chevalier family. Instead, he focused his attention on collecting the Pokéball that his Fletchinder had retrieved for him.[break][break]

Still, the fact that the stranger knew the Chevalier family meant he had indeed walked in the same social circles as Julien.[break][break]

"No, I'm a member of the Demassieux family. My name is Julien," he said to the blonde-haired man. "I've spent a great deal of time in Lumiose, myself, though I wasn't born there."[break][break]

Any member of Kalos' nobility should know the Demassieuxes hailed from Snowbelle City. They had ruled over the duchy there for hundreds of years.[break][break]

Severa flew from Julien's shoulder again, this time using STEEL WING on a wild Roggenrola. It was enough to catch the Rock-type off guard, allowing Julien to capture it.

"Barnaby L'oiseau. I'd say it's a pleasure to meet you, but I think we've already been acquainted." Too far to shake hands, the admin instead bowed his head in a show of diplomacy.[break][break]

"Still, it's been quite some time. I hope you've been well, Julien."[break][break]

Without interrupting the flow of her master's conversation, Colombe dove from her perch on a nearby tree and landed a harsh blow to a NUMEL that had wandered too close.

As soon as the man introduced himself, recognition entered Julien's face. He inclined his head as well.[break][break]

"Barnaby. What a surprise, meeting you today like this," Julien said.[break][break]

Two younger sons of noble families addressing each other by their first names did not make their relationship as familiar as the custom would make them seem.[break][break]

"I had heard of your transfer. Are you still working in television, then?" The life of an ambassador provided little opportunity to watch morning talk shows.[break][break]

A Volcarona fluttered into view. A sudden AERIAL ACE from Severa brought the moth crashing to the ground. Julien threw a Pokéball to capture it.

It was a surprise indeed, though Hoenn had a certain serendipity about it that seemed to encourage these sorts of coincidental meetings. [break][break]

"Not as much now, no." Barnaby lied. There was no reason for Julien Demassieux to delve into the details of his public persona. [break][break]

"I'm preoccupied with other facets of the organization." Which he would know to be ROCKET.[break][break]

GLASTRIER exhaled a deep wicker just then, announcing it was ready to move on. Perhaps it sensed Barnaby's desire to conclude the conversation as well; he wanted to be back home and retire in front of his warm HEARTH.[break][break]

"Well, it was a pleasure seeing you again, Julien, but I must be off. Now that I know you're in Hoenn I'll be sure to be in touch."[break][break]

As he reined his GLASTRIER to pass, Colombe swooped down one last time to pluck a small ARCHEN from a nearby tree. Barnaby captured both it and the NUMEL before riding back toward his stable.
