Three against one’s terrible odds. Navy watches from his observation deck, arms still crossed. His face is a mask, betraying little of the approval beneath. To be hopelessly out numbered yet still fight is noble. It’s an exercise in the inevitable at this point. There’s still a lesson to be learned.[break][break]
“Hattori, code-x.” Navy announces. Hattori, who has been clinging to Steelix’s revolving steel body, disappears. The boomburst blasts Steelix, but the steel snake remains standing strong.[break][break]
Grugni and Steelix both seem to stand there for now. The former chases Egg around, his stall tactic working wonders. The runic ghost is far too slow to win this game of cat and mouse. Hattori’s the only hope of winning that game, and he has business elsewhere…[break][break]
…with a shadowy kunai pressed into Lam’s throat. He places no pressure on the neck. The lesson’s there all the same. Hattori’s shadow sneak let him jump into Lam’s shadow. There he lingers, the blade formed out of that selfsame shadow.[break][break]
“Here’s another test for you, then.” Navy announces. “A test for Egg and you both. Assume Hattori’s a Rocket. What do you both do? He’s got your master held hostage.” Navy’s tone when addressing the Togekiss is stern.[break][break]
“Balls in your court, you two.”

[attr="class","text"] Little as he likes it, he knows that these stacked odds are no more than pushing back against a futile effort. An exercise in defeat at its best. But it’s also a challenge. If this is now a matter of fighting to the last, it’s more important to not lose his head in the process. Learn from those prior mistakes in the field. Will he spiral out, or accept the turn in tide gracefully, and with dignity? He’d prefer the latter to the former.[break][break]

Lam frowns though at the directive issued soon after. What does that mean? Code-x? His attention tracks the movement of each opposing pokemon as they follow Egg, who’s still glowing with charged energy– just waiting for the go signal to let loose.[break][break]

But despite his best efforts, he loses track of Hattori as the twist and turn of the Steelix’s massive body takes the forefront.[break][break]

Until, of course, he feels the press of a blade against his thread. Not close enough to cut, but just enough to feel its presence. Without Navy on the pitch, Lam listens to his disembodied voice, hands slowly raising even as the greninja’s arm remains looped in poised position. “Didn’t realize this gym was so, ah, cut throat,” he jokes weakly in turn, but the spike in his pulse is there. The erratic jump that this reminds him exactly of the moment he was held back from staying with his companion.[break][break]

He’s already played out a moment like this in real time.[break][break]

He let his quaquaval continue to fight for them. The cost had been her life.[break][break]

“Power down, Egg.” Despite the uneven canter of his heart, he swallows and then speaks even and clear. The look he shoots her is poorly received, the togekiss clearly reluctant to let go of the attack she’s stored up for this moment. But his stare remains fixed on her. He talks like this isn’t a gym match–but that’s all part of the song and dance. “Looks like we should get out of here. The quicker the better.”[break][break]

The greenish glow from her unused SOLAR BEAM fades immediately as she moves from her own cue. Twisting away from the two and charging at her trainer and his captor at an EXTREME SPEED. But she peels off and pulls upward just before the moment of impact.[break][break]

A bluffing game in the hope that the flinch of an expected hit will give enough room for Lam to push away so that they can both retreat without a greater loss.

All three Pokemon break character at the pun. They give their foe a flat stare. Somewhere far away, Navy laughs. Lam’s really in for it.[break][break]
“Hahaha, man, you’re lucky the League doesn’t let me actually hurt anyone. I’d smack you for that.” Despite their present circumstances, Navy’s voice is light. With a harsh cough, he tries to get things back on track.[break][break]
Hattori’s caught off guard by the burst of extremespeed. Flying back, his sticky long fingers latch onto a rock and hold there. Lam and Egg are on the lam. Making their escape. Finding better footing. There will be no retreat. For those who walk the warrior’s road, there is nothing but omnipresent peril.[break][break]
Steelix sinks down with another ice fang. Grugni flies around, lumbering into a pincer maneuver. The shadow claw tries to strike hard, strike fast, and strike true.[break][break]
While the two big Pokemon are busy playing their roles, Hattori grunts. Poison courses through his body. If left untreated, this might cause issues down the road. Thinking the other two have this in the bag, he retreats into the darkness. Knowing this battlefield like the back of his own hand, he moves back to Navy.[break][break]
There, he’s given an antidote.[break][break]
“You’ve done your part.” Navy assures him. “Let those two lunks handle the rest.”

[attr="class","text"] Despite the twists and turns the match has taken, and the shadowy knife pressed to his throat, Lam barks out a laugh. “Levity is a helluva tool,” he remarks in turn, a shoulder lifting. It’s not a true distraction, but it helps the moment before Egg bursts forward and forces the greninja’s hand.[break][break]
The ice fangs sink down into one wing as the togekiss attempts to angle away from the steelix, pulling at egg’s speed enough to allow the drag of shadow claws. The double attack is a hefty blow, but she tears loose. Life dew soothes over injury and strengthens her resolve.[break][break]
It is that revitalization, minimal as it is, that allows her to dive down again, allowing Lam to hop on her back before she surges upward again. Rising up off the pitch and into air out of reach. It preserves both of their safety and integrities, being able to withdraw as such. Affording them both the chance to escape with their skin, or regroup before diving back in if it comes to it.[break][break]
—From the perspective of real-life scenario, of course. As had been laid out to him moments before.[break][break]
He does not often fly with Egg, but it’s a matter of necessity. Possible, if only because the situation demands it of them. From the air above, he looks down at the steelix and runegrius and gives them a little wave. “Buffet them back with another fairy wind, if they try to lunge up.”

This is starting to push right up on the edge of what’s reasonable and what’s not. A warrior must prove his resolve. Even now, as his partner starts to weaken under the overwhelming might of this assault, Lam does not falter. He moves to regroup. If this battle goes on any longer…[break][break]
…well, best not let these caves claim another soul. They lost too much mere months ago.[break][break]
Navy presses a button. Light floods the arena. The fog turns off. This battlefield turns to a simple field of granite. Looking up at the pair, Navy waves him over.[break][break]
“Alright, alright. You’ve more than proven you’re a warrior. Come on down.” And, with those words, Navy turns and walks towards a quiet corner of the gym.[break][break]
The granite along this high wall has been smoothed. Scratches and black ink stain the pure surface. Words of past contenders within this arena greet them. This is the final part of participating in the Dewford gym.[break][break]
“You’re one helluva guy. You fought even when it was dumb to do so. Just know somethin’. In a real fight, with your back against the wall…there are gonna be people who’ll miss the hell out of you if you don’t come home.”[break][break]
Flicking his hand towards a nearby can of paint and stonecarving tools, he turns his attention back to the granite.[break][break]
“Leave a message for the challengers that come after you.” Opening his jacket, Navy pulls out what appears to be his personal copy of the badge. It sits on the inside of his jacket along with half a dozen other badges. Readying it in his hand, he flicks it in Lam’s direction.

[attr="class","text"] Of the two options, he’d prefer the tactical retreat. It is simply a matter of not ruling out all options that might arise. Lam gives Egg a soothing pat on the back as she keeps them afloat. “Only use the move if it comes to it.” The togekiss coos in response, voicing her understanding. As docile as the creature seems, she is one of his sturdiest and most dependable. To truly lose her in the field would be far more devastating.[break][break]

Luckily, no added tactics or offensive maneuvers are necessary.[break][break]

Lam puffs out a long breath as Navy calls it. The pitch shifts and rises, and Lam coaxes Egg lower when they’re signaled. “Good job,” he murmurs to his companion before hopping off her back to the turf beneath.[break][break]

Despite the ringer he was just put through, an easygoing smile finds its way to his face as he lets one shoulder rise and fall. “The last time I did nothing, it cost me. Thought it would be more worthwhile if I at least tried.” Still, a conceding nod is given, “Yeah, you’re right. You’ve given me a lot to think about, really.”[break][break]

And that was the point after all, wasn’t it? He wasn’t here because he thought he was the best. He was here to improve.[break][break]

“Uh, sure yeah,” he replies, momentarily looking at the tools left for him before he catches the flash of movement in his periphery. Hands out, he catches the badge tossed his way. “Thanks, man!”[break][break]

Recalling Egg to give her a well deserved back, he shuffles over to the wall to carve his phrase into the granite, highlighting the etchings with green paint.[break][break]

Next to a little doodle of a bird pokemon– take it easy, dude. but take it!
