Teleporting from Dewford Town to Slateport City occurred in the span of a heartbeat, but Zev's Xatu knew better than to bring them both directly to the man's apartment. Instead, they materialized several blocks away, in an alley behind a Kantonese restaurant.[break][break]

He had left the more incriminating equipment of his combat gear back at the evacuation station outside Dewford; other agents of Team Rocket might put it to good use. All that remained on his person were black and gray clothing that let him blend into the shadows drawn by twilight, his combat knife, and his pistol in a concealed holster.[break][break]

After recalling his Pokémon, Zev walked the rest of the way home. Each step was agony. The painkillers he'd taken did little to numb the pain of the stab wound, nonfatal as it was.[break][break]

More terrible than the physical pain, though, was the emotional turmoil that roiled within him. Caleb Harcourt's betrayal was a yawning wound that could not be stitched up and bandaged over. Could not be anesthetized with pills.[break][break]

The rage induced by the mere memory brought Zev to the brink of destructive urges. It took all of his focus to keep his composure, meaning he couldn't mask with ease like usual. With his hood up over his head, he kept his eyes forward and his expression set to calm neutrality.[break][break]

Eventually, Zev made it home. He took the elevator to his apartment and, his movements sluggish, walked through his front door. The excited barking of his Lycanroc greeted him moments before she nearly bowled him over.[break][break]

"Not now," he snapped. Luna fell silent at once and retreated into the kitchen…[break][break]

…to join Nenet's side.[break][break]

Zev stared, taken aback. Not because the sight of his girlfriend in his kitchen was unusual; no, she used it for baking and cooking whenever she spent the night, so he had gotten used to her presence. But they hadn't made plans for her to visit that night.[break][break]

"Nenet. What are you doing here?" he asked, trying to soften the edge in his voice, too exhausted to succeed.

Nenet had only just popped in the Kantonese egg tarts and set the nearby timer when the front door opened and in stepped Zev. His voice was surprisingly sharp and she arched a single eyebrow at the man when he finally noticed her presence in the apartment.

Slowly setting the oven mittens back on the counter, as if expecting the man before her to balk or dart off with any sudden movement, Nenet answers, "Making you breakfast for in the morning." The oven mittens released, and she crosses her arms over her chest, her hip resting against the counter's edge; Luna leans against her knees, and after a moment she lets one hand drop to gently scratch behind the wolf's ears.

"I thought you were working tonight," she states. It isn't a question, simply an observation.

Her golden eyes flicker over Zev's ruffled appearance, and she hazards with uncertainty, "Have you been mugged?" It sounds as preposterous as she expected it to, but at the moment that's the only thing she can think of that would result in this ruffled of appearance.

A quick scan of the counter behind Nenet confirmed that she was, indeed, making food for him. Zev had caught a glimpse of her closing the oven door, but it was too early to tell what was baking; the apartment didn't smell strongly of food yet.[break][break]

He made a vexed noise when she commented about his work. Under normal circumstances, a lie would have entered his mind at once, spoken into reality by an amoral tongue. But too much anger, shock, and bitterness distracted Zev at that moment; all he could muster was a half-truth.[break][break]

"I was at work," he said, turning away from Nenet and stripping off his jacket. His sore body protested every small movement.[break][break]

After kicking off his shoes, he trudged down the hallway toward the bathroom, ignoring her second question. Slowly, he peeled his torn and bloody T-shirt off his body, discarding it onto the white tiled floor. He'd have to incinerate it, probably. Destroy the evidence.[break][break]

His sheathed knife came off next, then the concealed holster with his pistol still inside it. Muscle memory kicked in. Without thinking clearly, he placed them on a low shelf near the shower. Just in case he needed them.[break][break]

The rest of Zev's clothes joined his shirt on the floor. Fully naked, he turned on the shower and waited for the water to turn hot, then stepped inside. A sharp hiss escaped between his teeth as the water drummed against his bandaged wound and other, lesser cuts. New bruises darkened his skin all over.[break][break]

Carefully, he unwound the bandage fabric from around his lower abdomen, exposing the freshly stitched stab wound to the air and water. He threw the soiled bandage into the trash can, then closed his eyes and leaned his weight against the shower wall. Finally, he could start to relax.

Nenet blinks once at Zev's answer he has been at work. Her jaw sets stubbornly when he moves pass her towards the bathroom without so much as a glance.

"Zev," she says a touch sharply, following after him into the bathroom where she stands at the threshold, her tone demanding explanation.

"You have to talk to me."
[break][break]
The woman falls silent as Zev begins to strip, first his shirt, which proves bloody, and then comes the weapons. Golden eyes a touch wide, her eyes flit from the weapons to Zev as she tries to parse this new, albeit silent, information.

"Zev," she calls quietly, as if trying not to startle a rabid animal. "What's happened?" As she speaks she crosses the bathroom, making sure to avoid the soiled clothing, and slowly slides open the glass door separating him from her.

Zev opened his eyes, alarmed, at the sound of Nenet's voice. If he could hear it over the rush of water from the showerhead, then she was in the bathroom with him. The soft rumble of the glass door sliding open confirmed this observation.[break][break]

Blue eyes met gold. The lines of his face tensed with apprehension as his gaze flitted to the weapons he'd placed on the shelf, then back to meet her stare. The wound in his side faced her, as obvious as sunlight during daytime.[break][break]

And Nenet was too clever to ignore it. He was trapped.[break][break]

Still, his first instinct was to talk his way out of it.[break][break]

"I got into a fight," Zev explained with half-truths as he nonchalantly squeezed shampoo from a bottle into the palm of his hand. "I'm fine, though. It looks worse than it is. And I filed a police report."[break][break]

That part was a lie.

Nenet does not miss Zev's gaze flitting past her, towards the weapons, though her own never wavers; she intently watches the wound at Zev's side, not believing his story for a moment.

"Did you," she asks, casually and without an ounce of belief in her voice. Her gaze flits back up as he begins to lather with the shampoo. "Was that before or after you stopped by the hospital?" Arms crossed, Nenet drums one of her fingers against her bicep as she waits for Zev's continued story.

Behind her she can hear Luna shuffling about, and for a brief moment the wolf pokemon sticks her head into the room and upon sensing the tension thick enough to cut with a knife, promptly fucks off to the living room.

She then requests, her voice barely above the water striking the tile, "Talk to me."

Zev could tell from the tone of Nenet's voice that she wasn't buying his story. In fact, the smart comment about the hospital just drove the nail in deeper, wedging apart his fabrication further.[break][break]

"Look, it's nothing that concerns you," he snapped, whirling toward her. He must have looked ridiculous, standing naked in the shower with shampoo in his hair. Whatever anger gathered in his face lost its bite as he stood facing her.[break][break]

Taking a deep breath, Zev struggled to calm down. Nenet was not at fault for his bad mood.[break][break]

"I got into a fight, but I'm fine," he repeated, trying to force a reassuring tone of voice. Whether he succeeded or failed was determined by her reaction. "That's all you need to know."

Nenet sharply arches an eyebrow as Zev snaps at her, the expression on her face wholly unimpressed. "Excuse you?" she answers icily. "You are not fine you have been stabbed."

"Furthermore," the woman bites out, not even caring as she enters the shower fully dressed to grab Zev's chin and force him to look at her, "You are my partner and I care about you." She glares as she speaks, her fingers pressing into his skin.

Water soaks Nenet's clothing as she stands adjacent to the spray.

Zev was wholly unsurprised that Nenet had pieced two and two together. That did not lessen his annoyance with her, especially when she continued to defy him. He'd always known her as a strong-willed woman, but they had never clashed. Not until that moment.[break][break]

He turned away to rinse the shampoo out of his hair, but her hand grasped his chin. The strength in her arm caught him off guard; he glowered at her, ready to snap again, but she spoke first.[break][break]

"You are my partner and I care about you."[break][break]

Zev grew still. He could not recall the last time anyone had said those words. His parents had claimed to love him, but their idiocy and negligence proved otherwise. Caleb Harcourt claimed to care for him, but the traitor had just stabbed him mere hours ago.[break][break]

Nenet could very well betray him, too. But the thought she could be manipulating him never crossed Zev's mind. Her bluntness over the past several months was unusual for most people, but he found that she liked that about her. She made her priorities clear, was easy to predict, and never got in his way.[break][break]

She was the ideal girlfriend. And now she'd confessed that she cared about him.[break][break]

In another circumstance, Zev might have talked his way out of this confrontation. But Nenet was standing with him in the shower, getting her expensive clothes wet and not giving a damn about it. She had seen through his lies yet still insisted she'd listen to his truth.[break][break]

And the man in agony over the loss of his only family found himself swayed.[break][break]

"My brother stabbed me," Zev admitted, meeting Nenet's gaze. Though the tension in his voice remained, his tone was softer now, hurt and vulnerable.[break][break]

Gently, he wrapped his fingers around her wrist and tried to push her hand away. "I'll tell you more after my shower. Water's getting all over the floor."

There was a subtle change in Zev's expression, one Nenet could never hope to place as he stood with his thoughts. Her grip looses enough at the admission which follows, her eyes a touch wide as they flit between his face, to said stab wound, and back again.

She hums at the suggestion to leave, mouth setting into a determined line. "Fine, but I'm dressing it when you get out." She steps back out of the shower and then begins to strip her clothing without care - it's nothing Zev hasn't seen before - and hangs the soggy mess from one of the towel racks.

She can filch an shirt from Zev's closet when the leave the bathroom.
[break][break]
"Zev," Nenet calls over the din of the shower, "do you have some sort of gauze?" She rummages through his cabinets as she speaks, already pulling out an antibiotic cream for use and sets it on the counter.

A fraction of tension eased from Zev's body when Nenet finally relented. He slid the door closed and resumed his shower.[break][break]

"It's in the bottom cabinet in a plastic bin, with my other medical supplies," he said over the noise of the rushing water. In the large bin, she would find everything one might expect from a standard first aid kit.[break][break]

Zev finished showering and toweled himself dry. Knowing Nenet would follow, he trudged into his bedroom, pulled on fresh underwear, and collapsed onto his bed, boneless with exhaustion and pain. He closed his eyes, exhaling deeply.[break][break]

Eventually, he felt the mattress dip as Nenet joined him on the bed. Without opening his eyes, he said, "Caleb has always been difficult and unpredictable. One day a few years ago, he disappeared from our apartment. I searched everywhere for him, only to find out he'd come here."[break][break]

Zev had never had so much reason to lie to her before, but that did not stop him now. The half-truths and embellishments came easily, spurred by the desire to keep her by his side. His voice as he spoke was soft, weary.[break][break]

"He's never said why. I've been trying to talk some sense into him, to get him to understand, but we fight and fight. We fought again today."

"Thank you," Nenet huffs under her breath. She opens the cabinet and pulls out the supplies as Zev steps from the shower, only to follow him into the bedroom. As he collapses there she goes to his close and pulls out a simple t-shirt pulled from its depths before joining him on the bed where she settles her supplies.

Pulling on the shirt, her head tilts as she listens to him speak. Herr hand coming to rest on his thigh, Nenet gently thumbs at the skin there in a soothing motion.

"That skinny little boy I met at the Gardens?" she asks in turn, a touch bemused as she tries to slot in a knife into Caleb's repertoire and comes up empty.

Her head shaking, Nenet she warns Zev without looking to his face, "This is going to be either painful or cold. Or both." With that, the antibacterial ointment is slathered over the wound via a fold of gauze.

"I don't understand why he stabbed you," she murmurs lowly as she works, doing her best to be as gentle as possible. "What did you argue about?"

Zev grimaced as the antibacterial ointment brushed against his stitched wound, but he made no noise, no hiss of pain. In fact, Nenet's touch was gentle. Soothing.[break][break]

"That same boy," he confirmed. "It might be hard to believe, but he was a policeman back in Kanto. He's had training."[break][break]

Zev considered revealing Caleb's ties to Team Rocket, but decided it was unnecessary. The more important piece of information to share was what answered Nenet's question.[break][break]

"He hates me." If only that were the whole truth. But Zev was not a man who understood the emotional nuance of Caleb's feelings. "Do you remember how mistrustful and cagey he was during the gala? It's because he doesn't want me here. Or at all."[break][break]

Zev's hand drifted thoughtfully toward the stab wound, but he did not touch it, knowing Nenet would slap him away.

Nenet purses her lips at Zev speaks, a little hum of acknowledgement sounding from her throat at the following question. "Yes, I remember," she muses before pulling her hands away to inspect her work. He hadn't exactly endeared himself then, and certainly hasn't now. There's a beat of silence, and then she murmurs, "I'm sorry it's like this." Her own relationship with her sisters is quite comfortable and always has been in contrast to whatever mess Zev has found himself in.

She briefly entertains the idea that Zev hasn't filed any reports due to his brother's presumed and continued police connections; instead she settles for the idea that Zev would likely cauterize the stump of his own arm before seeking medical attention. Taking up the pack of gauze she carefully unfolds pieces to lay across the wound.

The topic abruptly changes when she asks, "Do you have someone to prescribe you antibiotics or do I need to call an old girlfriend? The last thing you need is an anaerobic infection." They will have time enough for more questions once she's certain his health is no longer in danger.

Satisfied with her pile of gauze covering the wound, Nenet packs down a padded bandage atop it and then places Zev's hovering hand over the bandage to keep it in place. She tears pieces of medical tape to place over its edges to finish her work.
