Unlike prior trips to the Safari Zone, today BARNABY FINCH had a more pressing purpose than just simply catching Pokémon.[break][break]

Joining him was his newly-created TYPE: NULL, courtesy of Naomi Sato's hard work in deciphering and crafting the android from documents obtained in the Ultra Wilds. The beast was an unusual thing. Barnaby hadn't spent much time with it yet, but what they had shared was... telling.[break][break]

It was such an anomaly. So different from how most captured Pokémon acted. Hostile, apprehensive, cautious to a fault.[break][break]

The thing would need to be heavily trained if it were to be of any use.

Sat on a boulder near the border where forest met meadow, Barnaby watched as his TYPE: NULL sauntered around the open, grassy space. There were several things he took note of, like the curious metal mask the creature wore, or the way its body didn't seem to quite fit.[break][break]

It was an amalgamation of differing things, spliced together to make an unsettling chimera.[break][break]

New life. [break][break]

Yet it didn't seem so happy with its newfound sentience.

It was angry. Bitter. Confused, perhaps? [break][break]

Pokémon were born with instincts. They had innate desires, a primal connection to the world around them. They belonged, inherently, in a way that this TYPE: NULL did not.[break][break]

What it must feel like, to be in such an unknown space in a slapdash, unfamiliar body.[break][break]

It did not surprise Barnaby when the creature spotted and subsequently attacked a lone ZIGZAGOON, who'd been waddling carelessly in the brush. For whatever reason, the mere presence of another Pokémon set off the TYPE: NULL.[break][break]

A well-aimed X-SCISSOR about split the thing in two. Barnaby threw a Safari Ball before anymore damage could be done.

The TYPE: NULL turned its attention to BARNABY FINCH, incensed that the current focal point for its anger had been taken away.[break][break][break]

How dare a human interrupt it so?

... was the vibe Barnaby was getting, given the way its beady eyes narrowed and its dark fur prickled in outage.[break][break]

"Calm, now, little golem." With most Pokémon, Barnaby would have offered a sweet treat to ingratiate himself right about now. But with that mask, did the TYPE: NULL even require nourishment? [break][break]

It wasn't composed completely of biological components, after all. He knew, from what Naomi Sato explained, that cybernetics were a part of the blueprint as well.[break][break]

"I'm not the one you should be taking your anger out on. Let's go find a more appropriate outlet..."[break][break]

Scanning his surroundings, Barnaby saw a basking CLAMPERL at the edge of a nearby pond.[break][break]

Surprisingly enough, the beast listened to his instructions. Without even knowing what hit it, the CLAMPERL was mercilessly subdued, with even its tough outer shell cracking under the intensity of the TYPE: NULL's attacks.[break][break]

Again, Barnaby threw a Safari Ball before the injuries became too grievous. [break][break]

After a second time of this happening, the TYPE: NULL appeared less angry. Was it learning? Did it realize Barnaby's intentions? The only way to know was to continue.[break][break]

Luckily, a LEDYBA happened to fly nearby at just that moment.[break][break]

"Try that one next. Temper yourself, though. Killing is not always the end goal."

The LEDYBA barely escaped with its life. The poor thing's limbs had practically been ripped from its body, its antennae were bent in haphazard, unnatural ways, its elytra couldn't close over the inner set of wings...[break][break]

But it was alive. And moreover, the TYPE: NULL had stopped itself from executing the killing blow.[break][break]

A rustling from the forest's edge alerted the TYPE: NULL to it's next potential target. Barnaby heard the noise, too, and upon turning to face its origin saw a CHARCADET cautiously stepping into the meadow.[break][break]

What luck — a Pokémon he actually wanted! [break][break]

"Careful, now. That one's a little more challenging." [break][break]

To Barnaby's surprise, the beast uttered a shallow growl, signaling that it was apparently up for the challenge.[break][break]

"I want this one alive and relatively unharmed." He instructed, gesturing to the CHARCADET that was now staring at them warily. "Strike with precision and end your battles quickly."[break][break]

With that in mind, the TYPE: NULL lunged forward to attack.
