He was fucking terrified of the deep. He’d only ever been to the Crater, but only because of proximity, and… he’d heard rumors about what happened if one stayed too long in this particular place.

Of mutations and whatever else shit came crawling out of the woodwork…

“Let’s… let’s get this done as fast as we can,” he hissed as he swallowed his panic and quickly got to work.

Why was it the longer they lingered around here, the more the ‘heebie jeebies’ continued to bother him in the worst way possible…?

Josh wasn't exactly comfortable going into the Ultra Sea himself, though he didn't have a choice in the matter. He eventually had to come back for the one Ultra Beast that looked remotely mountable: a Naganadel. As dangerous was it was, having a ride Pokémon like that would be valuable when he was next conscripted into battle. By virtue of being a Gym Leader, he was expected to fight on the front lines.

"You're not the only one who wants to make this quick," he reiterated to Alex, Saber barking as the SYNC STONE began to hum. "Stand strong!" The Master of Faster raised a STATUS SHIELD around the Fortree Leader and himself, recalling it was effective at deflecting the brunt of the radiation.

His ‘g-dar’ was going off in all the worst ways, however he was in the presence of someone he trusted on the same level as miss Elinor Anderson so he felt alright to just drop the ball and—

Summoned the Wandering Stormbringer himself, Tornadus, to throw up a wall of pressurized air around them to serve as a ‘barricade’ of sorts while they got working.

Another click summoned his Kleavor, who then got to work hacking away at the rock with their axe-like ‘arms’, breaking apart heavy stone in the process.

Ugh. Why did this place feel… creepily alive?!

“I hate this place. It feels… weirdly… alive,” he trailed off as he felt another ripple of fear shake him.

The Stormbringer's presence was a welcome sight, the Tornadus' fierce winds blowing back the Ultra Beasts while Josh's STATUS SHIELD kept them safe from the atmosphere and the psychological attacks the horde of Nihilego subject them to. That shield wouldn't hold up forever, though! He trusted the Kleavor to keep up with the extraction, wishing he had brought his Garchomp with him. Alphamax would have torn through this easily.

"You're not the only one," Josh replied, sounding stressed from maintaining the STATUS SHIELD. "I'm dreading having to come here after I finish up my work at The Border and the Ultra Plant. But it's what the League wants. They want to learn as much about the rifts as possible."

Unfortunately for Alex, the horrendous form was both a trauma and an amalgamation of Pokémon Josh was not prepared to handle. At first, the Mauville Leader thought it was merely an Arcanine, commanding Saber to utilize a DISCHARGE attack to handle it. Just before the expanding hemisphere of electricity engulfed the attacking foe, the Arcanine's fur stood on end like quills of a Jolteon.

With the combination of FLASH FIRE and VOLT ABSORB, Josh's primary offensive elements were rendered useless. Its EXTREME SPEED let it outrun even Josh's Pokémon, the rider through over his mount's head as the hybrid Fire and Electric Pokémon went from charging the suited rider and Manectric to ramming them from behind faster than even he could see. Thrown from the saddle, there was little the prone man could do to evade the retaliatory DISCHARGE that threatened to engulf even the Wandering Stormbringer.

This was bad. Really bad.

“Go!” was all he could yell—not at the Tornadus, but at the Kleavor who saw what was about to happen—

Despite being slower than a Scyther, said Kleavor flung himself as close to the burst of electricity as possible, using his ‘arm blades’ to deflect most of the damage while he himself raced over to little Josh and helped him up.

“A-are you okay?! L-let’s get the hell out of here!” he continued, while the Tornadus used Dragon Hammer to slam himself into the seemingly normal-looking… ‘Arcanine’ while they made their getaway.

It sucked having to leave behind some of what they’d mined, though…
