This carnival business isn’t all bad. A local band’s putting on a musical number. From his booth at the ‘meet your hero’ part of the carnival, he has a nice view. Navy hums along to the sound of the music. Smiling, he bobs his head back and forth. It’s not a bad day.[break][break]
Of course, it’s never a bad day before trouble strikes. Limited though his vantage point might be, he’s watching. Waiting. Searching. There’s a crowd. Crowds mean trouble. The people of Dewford love and support their sheriff. Many a starry-eyed trainer’s started their journey since the battle in April.[break][break]
They think it’s just like the movies or the old stories. A plucky trainer sets off with his six buddies. He collects some badges. He becomes the champion. It’s the same fantasy that spurred the ghostly albatross around his neck into action.[break][break]
Life isn’t a story. As a local rockstar shreds his guitar, that’s what Navy thinks. Life’s not a party. Life’s hard. Times are hard. They’re at war.[break][break]
Yet, when he’s approached by the next trainer, he smiles.[break][break]
“Yo, nice to meetcha. Call me Navy, alright? Everybody does.”

Part of the reason Noel came to this carnival was because he had heard that Dewford's gym leader would be here. He wanted nothing more than to challenge him to a battle even in the middle of a crowd like this. To Noel he was nothing but a stepping stone to prove his worth as the best trainer out there. He had only heard the rumors about Navy through the locals about his gym challenge and how no one really knows what goes on inside. But today was the day Noel wanted to make a name for himself and search out for Navy. [break][break]

It took some time wading through the crowd in order to find this person Noel so longingly wanted to battle. Not until he took note of a certain crowd with the man himself at the center. Noel's mind began to focus on just one thing, the need to fight this man that could change his life forever. He pushed through everyone until he finally was face to face against Navy. He took a long look into Navy's eyes and once he heard his greeting, Noel replied.[break][break]

"My name is Noel and I wish to have a battle with you."[break][break]

Straight and to the point, Noel spared no time in asking the question he so desired. He would try and get what he wanted now even if he had to force Navy.[break][break]

His voice catches in his throat.[break][break]
Looking Noel, it feels like the clock has turned back a few years. He’s straightforward. His eyes burn with fire. He wants to fight. He wants to be the best. It’s all there, written on his face. It’s the incessant drive, the urge, the burning need of every Pokemon Trainer.[break][break]
“Mmm.” He considers that, chews over the challenge. Weighs it with due consideration. People start whispering to one another. They point. Locals that know them both note the resemblance, both in character and appearance.[break][break]
“Before that, I’m gonna ask you a question.” His tone, as always, is even. Measured. His eyes are the eyes of a man that’s been battered. One who has stared death in the face and will continue to do so. There is no disrespect or dismissal. He meets Noel’s eyes.[break][break]
“Why do you wanna be a trainer?”

Noel took a moment to reflect on himself. Why did he want to become a trainer? The idea of being the best at battles was what he thought to be the sole reason for it. But perhaps there was something much more than that, in any case he pushed those thoughts into the back of his mind and gave what he thought to be a satisfactory answer to Navy.[break][break]

"I want to be the best. It has been my dream to claim the top for myself and hold the title for my own. And I won't stop until I make that dream come true and I won't let anyone get in the way. Not even you."[break][break]

He stared deep into Navy's eyes. A look so fierce and passionate it would make any normal person uncomfortable with fear. A huge crowd had now formed around the two, uncertain of what was going to happen. Many of them eager to see what would happen next. But to Noel this audience didn't matter, in his view there was only one thing right in front of his eyes.[break][break]

Oh how a man walking the warrior’s road chants those words. They’re a mantra, a battle cry, a call to action. Men beat themselves bloody, drag themselves up the mountain until their fingers are nothing but nubs on the end of their hands.[break][break]
“Yeah, the best?” He asks the question like he’s never heard the words before. By now, people are whispering in the crowd. People know them both. There are some aghast at the notion of Noel picking a fight with the Sheriff. Others act like it’s the inevitable result of two such people existing within the same atmosphere.[break][break]
“Well…alright.” He puts his hand on the counter, jumps it. Points at the crowd and they part like a wave for him. People aren’t paying the carnival any mind. They follow Navy down to the beach. There, with the swagger of a warrior, he turns once more to face Noel.[break][break]
“And why, warrior, do you wanna be the best? Tell me.” He speaks like a command, his hand thumbing the six pokeballs at his belt. Six. A full team. Even in moments of rest and peace, he carries a full retinue.

Noel surveys the area around them. What a better setting than the beach he so frequently visited and trained at. With all eyes around them Noel takes one of his pokeballs from his belt and nonchalantly bounces it up into the air and catches it over and over again while looking straight into Navy's eyes. He knew this would be no easy task laid before him but he would give it all he's got.[break][break]

"To defeat people like you, and claim the top as my one and only spot. In my life this has been all I've ever thought about and I'd have no meaning otherwise."[break][break]

He then finally catches the pokeball one last time and thrusts his arm forward with ball in hand pointed at Navy.[break][break]

"Now is talking all you want us to do or are we going to battle?"[break][break]

There was arrogance in his voice. He didn't know what the outcome of this fight would be nor what would happen afterwards. Yet he knew this is what had to be done or else he'd never let down this moment. His heart was racing and his head was filled on thoughts of the battle to come.[break][break]

Giving the young man due consideration, Navy ruminates on that. It’s empty. Hollow. Unmotivated. A weak will like that won’t do somewhere like Hoenn. With a sigh, Navy thumbs his Pokeball. At his belt is a black and yellow ultra ball. Across the center is stamped the head of a roaring dragon. Inside sleeps a monster.[break][break]
A stone hanging around Navy’s thread begins to glow. It synchronizes him with that monster’s heart. The sheriff tosses his ball. In a trail of blazing red light, the dragon emerges. His very steps make the ground quake. His golden eyes trace down to the young opponent now facing them.[break][break]
It is the apex of all Garchomps. Bigger than it has any right to be. Scars cross his body, forming a story that words alone could never convey. Across his back, the fin is torn. This is no human-bred prince. It is a king of the wild. Drool drips down to the floor below. Vortigern, the black dragon, stands ready to strike.[break][break]
“Alright. Bring out all of your Pokemon.” The Sheriff’s eyes go to the younger man’s belt. “You’ve got four, yeah? Good odds.”[break][break]
The crowd whispers among themselves.[break][break]
“That’s…Vortigern. Sheriff’s never used him before.”[break]
“Sheriff’s really mad at this kid…”[break]
“Hope Noel will be okay.”[break][break]
“Your words are empty. Plenty of monsters wanna tear out the Champ’s throat. If you can’t even beat this one, you don’t stand a chance.”

Navy's taunt only infuriated Noel. How could he only bring out one Pokemon, it was like Navy was mocking the rookie trainer and Noel had had enough. He takes out each of his Pokeballs, 2 in each hand and tosses them out into the field. Out comes his Druddigon, Frogadier, Eevee and Rowlet. While not the most intimidating bunch they were still his companions that would accompany him on his journey.[break][break]

"I'll show you what I'm made of, don't underestimate me or you'll regret it."[break][break]

With a swift forward motion, his Pokemon immediately understood that now was the time to advance. They all charge forward, surrounding the battle-hardened Garchomp. Druddigon was to his front, Eevee on its left, Rowlet to its right and Frogadier on the rear. They all carefully observed the Garchomp, awaiting its next movement.

And in him kindles the rage of a dragon.[break][break]
Rage at himself. Rage at a boy who thinks he is a man. Rage at the Rockets that would kill him and rightfully say the boy drove himself into his own grave. Rage at the very world, for making it so he could not have a quiet, ideal journey.[break][break]
The Black Dragon roars.[break][break]
His roar makes the very earth tremble. It summons an earthquake, splitting the earth all around them. It’s violent, uncaring, cruel. Like nature itself. Civilians back away, realizing what’s happening. Navy is all business. The sync stone around his neck heightens the emotions of both trainer and dragon. They are united in purpose. When Navy speaks, it is with that dragon’s rage.[break][break]
“I do not underestimate you!” It is part Navy’s voice and part something else. “I estimate you. Tell me, Parker, what do you want me to tell your parents? At the funeral? After Rocket kills you? That their son died thinking he was a hero?”[break][break]
The earthquake rumbles. It is a miracle that Navy can stand amidst the violent uproar.

The sheer power of just one of Navy's pokemon amazed Noel, struck by awe, he had lost focus just for a moment and returned to his senses. The magnitude of this quake caused his feet to lose balance, bending one knee down to catch himself and then slowly but surely standing back up although it was no easy task. His pokemon all also struggled to keep up with the Garchomp's relentless assault on the land. Each and every one of them falling down and trying their best to keep up with the beast's tempo. [break][break]

"Tch... You don't know anything! I will be strong... I have to be or else what more is there for me![break][break]

He yells out in anger, losing himself to the fury building up inside him. He looks to his pokemon and thinks quickly. Turning to his Rowlet and shouting.[break][break]

"Go Rowlet, fly up high as high as you can!"[break][break]

Even though he knew his pokemon might not be a match for Navy's Garchomp, he had to give anything that could possibly give him a win a try. Rowlet looks to his trainer with uncertainty yet it had no choice. It gets onto its feet and begins to soar up into the sky. Flapping its wings with desperation so high up that most couldn't see it anymore. It wasn't until a few seconds later that an object started falling the sky. What looked like a meteor crashing into the earth was actually this pokemon's means of attack. This Brave Bird would give everything in its power with this attack. Flying straight down and aiming for the monster Garchomp's head.[break][break]

The black dragon turns his eyes heavensward. Vortigern has no need for words. That’s the responsibility of his other half. He watches. He waits. He pays the babies circling around him the consideration due a caterpie.[break][break]
“Strength without purpose is pointless. You think all the greats of this region fight just ‘cause they want to? Everyone’s lost somethin’. Everyone’s fighting to save the world.” An astute observer might note that the way Navy and Vortigern pace along the battlefield is eerily in sync.[break][break]
“freya morningstar and Melody Miro lost their homes. Callan Young’s got someone to protect. I can go on and on and on. You wanna be strong, find out why you wanna be that way.”[break][break]
Rowlett flies down towards the black dragon. He’s a meteor cast against a clear blue sky. Vortigern clenches his claw. The black dragon’s jet boosters ignite. With a great leap, he launches himself skyward. The black dragon catches the meteor in his hand. It hurts, but it hurts the other just as much. To attack the dragon, a toll must be paid.[break][break]
Vortigern grunts, but that is the only acknowledgment of the pain. Whether or not it considers the attack a passing grade, who can say? His rough skin tears into the bird. Winding up, gaining momentum, he chucks the owl like a beach ball towards the ground, following after him and landing back in the center of the pitch.[break][break]
He looks at the other Pokemon as if to ask who’s next.

Noel stared wide-eyed at the collision that was happening in the air. He couldn't believe what he was seeing, he thought that it wasn't possible for one pokemon to be able to have this much power. He quickly gets a hold of himself and looks at his Rowlet, plummeting towards the ground. He shouts "No!" and begins rushing into the battlefield, hoping to catch it in time from hitting against the ground. But he was too late, by the time he was halfway there the small and wounded Rowlet had already hit the ground with a blow so fierce, sand blasted around them. Noel finally reaches his companion and kneels down to hold it in his arms, looking all over it dazed and confused on what to do. All while the gargantuan Garchomp towered over the both of them, a presence so fierce it would stop anybody in their tracks. Noel then looks over to Navy in fury, a hatred burning in his eyes.[break][break]

"You!... This isn't over yet! We can still fight! Don't think you've won with this!"[break][break]

The words felt hollow from his own mouth, inside he was shaking with fear, he couldn't afford to lose anyone of his pokemon, it would just break his heart and leave him in despair. The rest of his pokemon all stared back and forth between their owner and the Garchomp, unsure of what to do without any orders and with doubt in their minds. They all knew this was a hopeless battle at this point.[break][break]

“Heh. We’re pretty similar, at the end of the day.” Vortigern turns. His connection to the warrior affords him insight into the man’s next actions. He turns in time to see the pokeball. Vortigern disappears. And like that, the battle is over.[break][break]
“Listen. I’m on your side. It’d make me happier than hell to see you become Champ. You’ve got a warrior’s spirit. You gotta understand somethin’, though. What I showed you? That’s just a taste. Haven’t you seen the news? There’s plenty of strong people out there. Not a lot of ‘em are the sort of people who’ll call off their monsters.”[break][break]
A small pause. All around him, people are whispering. This is the first taste most of them have seen of their Sheriff when he’s having a serious fight. An exhibition match is one that, but that…[break][break]
…Well, it puts some hearts at ease and makes others worried. The crowd starts to disperse. Doubtless, the whole town will hear about it soon.[break][break]
“Parker…” He considers his next words carefully. “Let’s say Rocket attacked the town again. Say League sets up a barricade and says stay away. What would you do?”

So many thoughts were racing throughout Noel's now fractured mind. After a moment of silence, he gives back a hot-headed reply.[break][break]
