Tempest isn't here right now. Off doing some Rocket nonsense that Chu-e hadn't paid much attention to.[break][break]

It's okay. It gives Chu-e a little time to themself.[break][break]

The dogs are... a lot. Chu-e had always been more a cat person. But that was okay, because Cillian pulling a few strings and their own reputation and hoarded back cash had gotten a nice house. Just some stuff was waiting to be cleared out before actual move-in dates could be arranged.[break][break]

Standing in the kitchen, Chu-e carefully sliced some ox tails they had picked up into smaller pieces. A stove was on the pot, ready to simmer and stew for the next few hours. The least they felt they could do to repay Cillian's kindness was cook dinner for him and his husband.[break][break]

It did give them pause, though.[break][break]

The man wasn't looking well.[break][break]

Though his cheeks are gaunt beneath shadowed eyes, Cillian's spirits have lifted with Lulu Flint's return. He grieves his daughter still, but finds pockets of peace amongst misery in which he can clean the house, take care of the pets, and cook dinner without feeling infinitely drained afterward.[break][break]

He steps into the kitchen with intent, hesitating mid-step with surprise.[break][break]

"Oh, hey."[break][break]

There's a flicker of residual wariness before his shoulders relax and his guard drops. He doesn't smile, but there's nothing hostile in his countenance. His golden gaze flicks to the stove, then back to Chu-e Choi.[break][break]

"What are you making?"[break][break]

His own dinner plans waylaid, Cillian sits at the island and plucks a few grapes from a vine. His Alcremie offers a plump strawberry to chase them down, no doubt having plied Chu-e with the same already.

"Hey, Gav." Chu-e pauses. Frowns, then shakes their head as if loosening old cobwebs. "Cillian. Sorry. Old habits and all."[break][break]

They hum, lifting a wooden spoon from the pot they had been stirring. The smell is warm and rich and thick in a way that's tinged with an odd nostalgia. It seemed that their time in the League's captivity hadn't dulled their cooking skills.[break][break]

"Ox tail soup. It's filling and easy on the stomach." They don't look at Cillian Quinn right away, worming their lip. A sudden tension in their shoulders. They pluck another offered strawberry from Clover's waiting mitts, nibbling on it to stall.[break][break]

Mentally, Chu-e slaps their own cheeks. They had never been one to beat around the bush when it mattered.[break][break]

"Are you sick?"[break][break]

They whirl around on the spot, hair twisting with the force. It comes out half like an accusation- but there is worry in Chu-e's body language. How they twist the spoon in their hands. Their cheeks are pink too; Cillian knew how Chu-e had trouble with expressing genuine care.

Cillian waves a hand as if to dismiss the apology.[break][break]

Then frowns, taking in the tension in Chu-e Choi's shoulders. Wariness returns with a prickling uncertainty. For a brief, paranoid moment, he wonders if Chu-e intends to poison him.[break][break]

He laughs, sudden and sharp.[break][break]

"Sorry," he says quickly, palms up. "I'm not laughing at you."[break][break]

His thoughts settle into more reasonable parameters, and he shakes his head.[break][break]

"Not sick, no." A beat of hesitation. Much like Chu-e wasn't comfortable expressing genuine emotion, Cillian struggled with honesty when it came to his own feelings and struggles. But this was his friend, so... "Just been under a lot of pressure at work. You know how it is."[break][break]

Don't disappoint me. Walsh's presence lingers even in his absence.
