Rangers and officers of the League’s military alike gather in the base he has built under the sea. A kaleidoscope of shimmering light streams down through a natural skylight in the center, shifting in color depending on the sea’s whims.[break][break]
Building this base was hard. Cultivating soil here so vegetables would grow proved even harder. Yet the seeds eventually took, and with them grew safe harbor from the horrors waiting outside. Now that the League has finally decided it’s time to take action, the Sheriff’s humble little base has been converted into a FOB for extraction excursions.[break][break]
When Caleb Harcourt is presented to him, billed as the latest ranger to join him on an extraction run, Navy’s first thought is concern. The man may be a few years older than him, but paternal concern kicks in. Whatever he’s been through must have been rough. When his peers disperse, returning to the hundred different jobs demanded of them, Navy makes no secret of voicing his concern.[break][break]
“You sure you’re up for this, man?” Naked concern steeps the words. Before even hearing the older man’s answer, he’s making for his PC. Just in case there’s need of a healer, he switches a few Pokemon out.

Was it too soon to go back to work? Some might say so, but Caleb needed the distraction. Left to his own devices, his mind wandered, lingering on the horrors he'd faced in Sootopolis: not the torture - he'd been tortured before - but the thing that Zev Harcourt had transformed into...what the hell were they supposed to do about that?[break][break]
Black crystals sharp as knives haunted his dreams, pierced him through a thousand different ways, hissing that he was no brother of theirs.[break][break]
Someone was speaking to him - the guy assigned to play babysitter, Caleb supposed. He didn't know Navy, but had heard good things about the man. Good things didn't mean shit, though. Just another League "hero" who didn't come for me, he thought bitterly. He still hadn't received a good answer from anyone about his capture, and why the League had failed to do anything about it. Sure, Elinor Anderson had been a councilwoman when she'd been rescued from Rocket's clutches, which he supposed outranked him...and yet.[break][break]
And yet.[break][break]
It's because I'm a Rocket defector, he suspected.[break][break]
The rhythmic thumping of the Ultra Deep Sea beckoned them. Caleb strapped on his tactical gear, ready to face whatever abominations lived down there - paradoxes, he remembered, born of dream mist.[break][break]
You first met BARNABY FINCH here, a voice in the back of his mind realized.[break][break]
"I'm fine," he replied coldly to the gym leader, tone clipped. He didn't much care for the pitying look this Navy fellow was giving him. "Let's go."

“Alright.” The matter rests there. If the rangers upstairs think he’s good to be here, so be it. With eyes that cold and wounded, the sheriff sees no point in arguing. Instead, he assembles his team, dons his sygna suit, heads for the edge of camp.[break][break]
“Got a long ride ahead of us. We’re making for Eternatus’s core, way off…” A gloved finger traces a path before settling in the northwest, “…that way. We ride. If you need a ride, you’re welcome to my Arcanine. Voyager’s a friendly guy.”[break][break]
Whether or not the offer is accepted, they plunge into the depths of the sea. Above them is the siren song of angels. Eternatus’s chorus sings beautiful songs for their Lord in a language only He can understand. Poisoned dragons rule the sky. Their journey is slow going.[break][break]
They surf through veins of viscous blood, hide within the wreckage of long-destroyed spacecraft, and clash with dead things. Pokemon ambush them with sightless eyes. Where sockets should be, barnacles grow. Where fur once was, coral grows. Navy’s chrome warrior, Roland, makes short work of them. The Iron Valiant’s gaze always seems to linger on Caleb before returning to his pokeball.[break][break]
“Won’t be much longer now.” Navy eventually says, breaking the pattern of easy silence. “League’s sending two people when they should be sending an army.” Beyond those words, bitterness seeps in. This sea pulls out emotion like old clothes from a closet.[break][break]
“We should be killing this thing, not harvesting it for parts.”

Caleb let out an inaudible sigh of relief when Navy didn't fight him on whether or not he was in good enough shape to tackle this particular mission. Appreciative of the man's acceptance, Caleb waited in patient silence as the gym leader made his final preparations before entering the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]
Eternatus...considering he'd read basically none of the reports ahead of this mission (angelo vestri would probably find that amusing: after all these years as a Ranger, and Caleb was still neglecting the before and after paperwork), the name ought to have been unfamiliar to Caleb. And yet, it struck a chord somewhere inside of him - like a sudden wave of deja vu. It didn't help that the terrain they had begun traversing through was primarily comprised of crystals the sickly purple color of toxic sludge...which also reminded him of something. No, somewhere. A poisoned land from a dream of long ago.[break][break]
He turned down the offer of a ride, instead releasing Lyra from her Pokeball and hopping up onto her broad shell. The Lapras trilled softly in encouragement and Caleb patted her neck. I'm allright, his gesture communicated. She'd been worried about him, too. He had a feeling she felt some measure of guilt about his capture, even though there had been nothing she could have done to prevent it.[break][break]
Navy cleared the path, his team of Pokémon as disciplined and efficient as he seemed to be. Lyra helped by briefly fending off an abomination that drifted just a little too close for comfort. In the end, they met little resistance they could not contend with.[break][break]
"So maybe we should kill it," Caleb offered dryly, in response to Navy's comment. The threads of resentment and acidity that roiled through the waves around them didn't mean much to an already bitter man.[break][break]
Something pulsed ahead: rhythmic, beckoning. Ultraviolent light pierced through the haze, nearly blinding them. Caleb instinctively shielded his eyes, but thought he saw a beam of energy coalescing to the right of Navy. In one swift motion, he leapt from Lyra's back and launched himself at the other man, pulling him to the ground, kicking up a puff of seafloor sediment.[break][break]

When the Lapras emerges, the sheriff spends a long moment studying the creature. He’s always had a high opinion of this particular species. Every Pokemon species is different. People sometimes underestimate the agency of such creatures. Lapras, in his experience, do not lightly make friends. Such kindhearted creatures are very particular about the people they stay with.[break][break]
It’s an endorsement of character. Seeing Lyra softens Navy, reinforces that the tone of his partner comes from a place of pain. Pain is something he knows all too well. He won’t push. They’re forced along on this expedition together.[break][break]
Caleb’s comment pulls a dry laugh out of the sheriff. Lighting up a cigar, his face is cast in a magenta light. A tight smile is perched on his lips. Front teeth hold the cigar in place.[break][break]
“Got a god hanging in one of those balls, ranger?” He thinks nothing of how that might be taken. “Killing this thing’s damn hard. We go about it the wrong way, we risk waking it up. That happens, Dewford’s probably wiped off the map. Can’t speak to other gym leaders, but I take my job seriously. Dewford’s not going anywhere on my watch.”[break][break]
He speaks these words while they march to the core. They’re in the heart chamber now. Here there be monsters. Poisoned purple crystals line the room. In their reflection, Navy sees himself. He sees a Pale Rider. Sometimes, he sees the boy he once was – lost, alone, angry.[break][break]
“Smart play’s this: one of us goes up and mines. The other shores up defenses. Ugly bastard up there with his heart gets upset when we start mining. Nihilego and Naganadel are gonna filter in. Worse yet’s when the fog rolls in. I’ve got a sygna suit. Doesn’t hurt quite as bad as it could. If you wanna come too, I won’t stop you.” Hurt as this man seems to be, inside and out, Navy knows babying him won’t help.[break][break]
“Arceus knows it hurts when I go by myself.”[break][break]
Another Pokemon flies free. Olivier sways in his elegant white gown. Greeting Caleb with a bow, the Gardevoir stands aside and focuses his sights on the future.[break][break]
“Either way, let’s get to work.” Getting out his pick, Geiger counter, and designated container, he gets to work. They’ve a long, excruciating task ahead of them. At least Caleb’s taking it seriously enough to be packing tactical gear.

They began to mine, and Caleb found his already weakened mind - bogged down by the effects of the radiation he'd endured - weakening further. Without a sygna suit, he didn't have quite the same level of protection as the gym leader accompanying him. Intrusive thoughts began to worm their way into his mind, memories of his recent torture: the pain, shame, and anger weighed him down as he tried to pry haphazardly through rock and rubble to find something useful amidst the hellscape that was the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]
Lyra trilled softly, and Caleb glanced over at her. The Lapras was glaring intently at a sinister-looking Nihilego that had ventured just a little too close for comfort. Caleb inched backwards, wary of the creature - their toxins were rumored to be quite deadly, capable of something akin to mind control.[break][break]
"Give us a boost," he requested of Lyra. She nodded, showering Caleb and Navy in shimmering, energizing LIFE DEW. All of a sudden, Caleb's heart didn't feel quite so heavy, adrenaline pumping through his veins as he began to dig faster.[break][break]
"What exactly are we looking for, anyway?" He muttered, loud enough for his companion to hear.[break][break]

“Cheese.” The sheriff says. “Cheese in a maze. That’s what we’re looking for.” His pick breaks through rock. Amidst the stone is a glint of magenta pink. Pay dirt. His counter goes crazy. Navy’s Geiger counter hums. The sight drives what lurks behind them crazy.[break][break]
With a careless backwards flick of his wrist, he sends out Vortigern. His black dragon roars. With him on the field, the sygna suit can fully activate. Anticipating another pulse of the organ above, Navy throws up a shield. The world outside their little bubble is painted in dark blue. Esoteric attacks, like radiation or the pulse of a god’s organ, are dampened.[break][break]
“I guess I’m not supposed to say, but it’s for the League’s latest pet project.” Caleb’s injuries tell a story. They mark him as a man on his own. Somehow, he doubts the man will leak anything he’s told to Rocket. “…sorry.” The organ’s getting to him. It doesn’t take much to make him doubt the League.[break][break]
Behind them, outside the shield, Vortigern wages his own private war. He’s been fighting Naganadel and Nihilego for months now. He knows all the right spots to chew. He knows their attack patterns. He knows they die the same as any normal Pokemon. They’re safe, for now.[break][break]
“I complain too much, but I spend more time down here in this damn sea than I do in the town they told me to protect.”

Caleb barked out a laugh.[break][break]
"Sounds about right," he commented, doing nothing to hide the bitterness in his tone. He eyed the other man with a sudden scrutiny. "Ever consider saying no? Choosing your people over them?"[break][break]
Them being the League, of course. The government that had abandoned Caleb to torture and death. The government that treated Rocket defectors as second-class citizens. The government that was all too eager to lie to the citizenry about the real dangers the region faced.[break][break]
As if responding to his volatile emotions, the sickly purple Tera crystals began to glow, and from the depths of the Deep Sea emerged a horrible creature - some sort of fusion between several different Pokemon - the jutting bones of a Marowak, the gaping maw of a Mawile, the claws of a Scyther...it exuded the same toxic light as the crystals, poisonous and rancid, and Caleb backed up hastily to put distance between himself and the monster.[break][break]
"Lyra!" he called, but the Lapras was already charging an ICE BEAM. Caleb turned to Navy expectantly, mouth twisted in a pained grimace.[break][break]
"This place is a goddamn nightmare."[break][break]

Listening to Caleb, the sheriff wonders, not for the first time, what exactly this man has been through. Having never met the man before today, he could not fathom what the man has been through, or what Isaac Merlo went through to pull him out of that hell. All he knows is what he sees: they share forbidden knowledge. Distant monoliths little care for the people of a sleepy seaside town.[break][break]
“Yeah.” He finally answers. “It really is.” His eyes fall upon the monster. Through the purple haze surrounding the core, he sees more lurking. They wait for their turn to strike. Vortigern charges, trying to wrestle the many-bladed monster into the path of the ice beam.[break][break]
“And you wanna know the worst part? They’re letting civilians come down here.” Disgust seeps through his words. “Civilians. Rocket convicts. They’re working people to the bone.” Hand on his pocket, he spares a glance to the core.[break][break]
“Those are my people. If the higher ups wanna come down here and get themselves killed, that’s their business.” His black dragon’s outrage leaves him bloody against the claws of their monster.[break][break]
“When the mist breaks, let’s get the hell out of here. We’ll drop a little stone on the way back so the Nihilego don’t follow us.”

Still, through these translucent barriers, you catch a glimpse of a nearby planet. One that looks suspiciously like the one you all live in—except that a large portion of it seems covered in land.[break][break]

You must escape with your gathered material. Your ally or allies may be incapacitated by the paranoia settling in their psyches, or perhaps, the eldritch mutations beginning to metamorphose their body or bodies.[break][break]

Depending on how much your characters have mined, you may need to lessen your extracted load to ensure successful escape from this wretched place. After all, the horrors that reside here may make chase.

Caleb no longer fully understood what the fuck was happening around them. Ice collided with the horrific abomination, shattering it more easily than Caleb would have expected (it was just an illusion, all of this is just a nightmare made manifest), but in its place, throbbing pink eyes - grotesque - coalesced, surrounding Navy and Caleb as if hoping to capture them.[break][break]
And all the while, Caleb could not help but...stare blankly at Navy, taken aback by the sudden vehemence in the man's tone of voice - his own anger with the League.[break][break]
"But aren't you a League higher-up?" He asked, confused. "You're a gym leader, aren't you? Don't you have some sway over what the League government does?"[break][break]
Caleb was just a Ranger, a nobody. A Rocket defector, worst of all. Nobody would listen to him, even if he agreed with Navy's sentiment. Nobody should be allowed to walk into this madness without the proper training. Hell, he wasn't even sure the Rangers had the skillset to deal with everything this place might throw at them.[break][break]
Lyra sent a DRAGON PULSE at the eyes, causing them to scatter. As they did, Caleb noticed something else ahead - within the pulsing core. A refection of their own planet? It looked like a map...except there was way too much land and not enough ocean. A different world entirely or - ?[break][break]
Anguish filled Caleb as the eyes re-formed, obscuring the planet, only this time they were an angry red. Amongst them, he thought he saw the eyes of a sinister Gengar...a familiar Gengar. Smoke? Zev Harcourt's companion? Why would he be here?[break][break]
"We need to leave," Caleb demanded of Navy, turning to flee. He gathered up as much of their mined materials as he could.[break][break]
"Get me out of here alive, and I'll buy you a drink."
