Unlike her first gym challenge in the nostalgic city of Mauville, Desiree didn't have to travel too far to make her appointment at this one; it was just a simple and clean walk over from her treehouse apartment, the perfect late-morning cigarette journey. It was a bit ironic that she'd only challenged gyms that had those undertones of reminiscence to them. Josh Devlin's was in the city that took its aesthetics all the way to her home region of Kalos, and this one just so happened to be on her list before she'd taken her one-way ticket over. The Fortree Rescue and Treatment Sanctuary was what prompted her mother to suggest moving to Hoenn, after all, considering she'd owned a similar sanctuary back in Lumiose. How blissfully ironic.[break][break]

Accompanied by her party of four, two of whom would simply be spectating the upcoming match, the pinkette would be quickly met by an attendant and would be off to where she'd have the chance to reacquaint with Alexei after confirming her appointment. She was ever-so excited as she was the tiniest bit intimidated- this would be her first real, true pokemon battle against a fellow trainer. Not even having practiced with her sisters when she was living in Kalos due to a rather demanding record contract, she couldn't help but wonder just what the outcome of this new experience would be.[break][break]

It would be better to be optimistic rather than anxious, especially because this was one of her new friends! Sitting off to the side when they would enter, the dazzling Florges would sit the sleepy Skitty down in her lap for the show. Desiree thought it would be cute to bring the Delcatty plush alongside the familiar feline, as it was now the normal type's most prized possession.[break][break]

"Bonjour~! ♡ Hope you've been well, how big of a dent have you made in all those jellybeans you got? ♡" She'd giggle, reaching her jewel-ridden hand out for a formal shake.

Oh, djinni.

Ever since the Funtasia Faire had ended, he was… he was still working on the large jar of six hundred and ninety jellybeans. To his mild surprise, he realized that said jellybeans in the jar were a mix of all the nice flavors a certain brand sold.

So yay for him!

(Though, the gay ~~Spanish~~ Paldean panic he got from Guillermo Marceliño when he brought home the jar was… hilarious to say the least.)

It wouldn’t take long for the man of the hour himself to arrive—and him actually having to send Claire off for some errands (thanks lovely receptionist) so he could escort the guest of honor herself to the back.

“Bonjour, mademoiselle,” he greeted back with his curling ~~Russian~~ Unovan accent, cheeky grin on his face as he even reached for her hand and gave it all the proper ~~French~~ Kalosian flair and ooh-la-la greeting.

“I’ve been doing great, and… well, you guessed it. My partner almost had an aneurysm at the sight of the jar of jelly beans! He asked me where the hell I got it from so I just pointed him to the Funtasia,” he added with a cackle once he straightened up—

Aww! The giant Delcatty plushie was travelling with them!

“Meow-meow busy making biscuits with the Delcatty I see,” he cracked a few moments later.

Grasping his hand and giving a soft, gentle shake, her silver and crystalline jewelry would shimmer in resonance with her excited smile; Desiree found solace in the fact that she would be facing off against a friend in such a setting, but especially due to Alexei's infectious grins and laughs. It also didn't help that his Unovan accent was quite prominent in his reiteration of the common Kalosian greeting, which was hilarious every time she'd heard those that put emphasis on that 'r'- do just that- and girl, was that hella common here in Hoenn. "Well, if you need help digging in, I'm feeling a jelly bean craving coming on ♡~" She'd giggle, placing a hand on the forehead of her big pink pokemon beside her and giving a couple of encouraging pats.[break][break]

Both of their gazes met the adorable feline, her body fully encompassed with the giant Delcatty plushy; it was like one of those memes where a kid was wearing a backpack seven or eight times the size of their body, it was just so big! But Meowmeow loved to snuggle up on it like she did with her mama, curled up beside her underside. "I think it reminds her of when she was a newborn, thank you again for it! ♡ It hasn't left her side since you gave it to us." Gushing at the cute sight, she'd clasp her hands together and smile ear to ear- hopefully, the upcoming battle would be just as wholesome, though Desiree had no doubts knowing Alexei.[break][break]

"Gotta admit, I'm kiinda testing the waters a bit here today," she'd twirl her hair, eyes meeting the rotating meteor of a pokemon that would float beside her secluded within its rocks, ".. my pokemon have battled against wild pokemon, but I've never truly participated in a trainer against trainer pokemon battle. We've been practicing, though~ I've started keeping a little diary with the moves they are capable of, I gave them cute lil' names too! Figured a friend's gym would be a good place for such a new experience ♡."[break][break]

Maybe she was rambling a bit, but Desiree figured that honesty was important when it came to what was soon to unfold! She hoped he'd understand, everyone's gotta start somewhere, after all. But she had anything but fear when it came to her pokemon and their abilities in battle- they had fought against strange beasts in the Ultra Deep Sea and the Mechanical Kingdom, so there was still confidence in all of her inexperience.

The Minior had his attention, oh definitely.

“I know quite a few people who collect Minior,” he mused as he remembered Zac Ramsay. Great guy who loved nature and all that.

“They do the collecting because. You’ve seen the inside of a Minior after they shed their rocky shells, right?”

(The bonus here was that his Minior was a shiny one so it was literally like holding space in the pam of your hand… if you could carry a meteor that was several times heavier than a sack of rice!)

“Come, come, follow me. We ain’t fighting in here at the reception area!” he chuckled as he then led the way to the right-hand side door (there were two; the one on the left led to the Sanctuary proper as well as the medical facilities and the right led to the outdoor arena) and held it open for her.

“To be honest, you’re… you’re going to see why out of every single Gym Leader in Hoenn, I’m the so-called ‘easiest’ to get a badge from once we’re out on the battlefield.”

While on the way over, he would give her a handful of said jelly beans to munch on.

Though residing behind its hard shell, the curious Minior would smile as its pink eyes swirled within, hidden from sight. "Ooh, yes I have~! ♡ They are so pretty when that happens; Starburst, we're talking about you!" Desiree delicately patted its rotating amalgamation of rock formations, prompting the rock type to trill with a stellar call. "Starburst's color is so pretty and vibrant, but you'll have to find out later so I don't ruin the surprise~! ♡" She grinned, picking up the sleepy eepy Skitty to cradle her all the way to the battle's destination. If Alexei looked just hard enough at the cosmic pokemon he'd be able to see the little sparkles emanating from his glowing pink body, but the true beauty took its claim when the shield was down.[break][break]

Following his kind words and directions, the trio of three pokemon behind her floated behind her, amping each other up for what was yet to unfold. It was indeed wise not to fight in the reception area; Desiree couldn't help but laugh at the idea. Her sharp acrylic nails clinging against an ornately decorated antique bowl that rested within her purse, she'd pull it out at his offer of the jellybeans and let Alexei fill it up to as much as his heart desired! They were his well-earned treats, after all, not hers.[break][break]

"I doubt that's true, Alexei~! ♡ You've still got a one up on me though, hehe~" She smiled, placing the bowl of jellybeans into the hands of the Florges that floated a bit behind her- Meowmeow still resting in her arms. Given the nature of such an organized battle, the pinkette figured there would be no harm in holding onto the feline baby within her grasp while it took place. The normal type was a trooper despite her tiny size, so she'd probably get a kick out of it too once she conquered her sleepiness.[break][break]

Stroking the pink fur softly, she smiled as her eyes met the birddad's. "Don't go easy on Fuschia and Starburst now, they are looking forward to a touch match~! ♡" Encouragement took root amidst the normal and rock-type mons' approach to her front, popping a few of the jellybeans ever so generously provided into her mouth. All she was waiting for was his call and presentation of his gladiators, Desiree was ready and feeling the vibes!

No, no, he had to resist the cute charms of the pink Pokémon in front of him!

He knew just how much of a problem Blissey were on the battlefield, so he would definitely have to think outside of the box for this one—and then, an idea clicked into his head.

“Let’s get this started, can’t keep you waiting too long now!” he chirped as he crossed the open-air arena and plucked two Pokéballs from his pocket, revealing a Hawlucha and one of his two Gliscor (no it wasn’t the shiny one today, this would be Scorpio’s time to shine) once he took position on the other side of the field.

“You get first move!” he added as he popped a few more jellybeans into his mouth, the Hawlucha tensing themselves; while the Gliscor snapped their pincers in anticipation.

Gliscor and Hawlucha are out on the field!

The soft kitten that rested in her arms purred as her trainer got ready for battle, nodding in excitement when Alexei said she would get the first move. "Got it~!" Fuschia, Starburst, get on up there~! ♡" Desiree exclaimed with her posh attitude, continuing to stroke the feline with all the love in the world. The two pokemon that the Gym Leader would be battling with looked quite tough, macho types of pokemon; she had never seen either of them prior, so today was full of new experiences and new sights indeed![break][break]

If there was one thing that was key to Desiree's style of battling and commanding her pokemon, which was not the most common as of late, it was set up and status moves. There was a bit of strategy in that, and she wished for that to be able to blossom with her vantage of being able to go first. Though she was not quite in the know as to the pokemon that she was facing and their quirks, such as typing advantages and disadvantages, she definitely had a hunch that both of them were flying types. But what else would she have been able to expect when facing off in such a gym like this one?[break][break]

"Starburst, scatter the gems~! Fuschia, give the smaller bird a Teravolt Kiss~!" She commanded, causing the eyes of the Skitty to open in curiosity due to the loud, bubbly tone of voice. Twisting within its rocky shell, the Minior channeled its energy through its shell and caused STEALTH ROCKS to rain down from the skies, scattering sharp stones around the field. Following up after such a glimmering array of stones, the Blissey raised a hand up to her lips and kissed outward, sending a cloud of TOXIC purple haze to float toward the Hawlucha in an attempt to poison it.

Thankfully, the moment the opening salvo had been launched, the Hawlucha was quick to get to work.

The landbound dual-type then began sauntering across the battlefield and lashing out at the Blissey with a Low Kick attack; while the Gliscor flew low, weaving through the noxious wave before lashing out with a Night Slash in retaliation.

All this and he didn’t even have to say a single word to the two companions he had out on the battlefield!

“Over time, you’ll get used to letting them do their own thing without telling them explicitly what to do,” he advised from his side of the battlefield.

“For now, though, you can direct them with simple commands until they get used to doing what they do best when they’re fighting for you.”

Gliscor and Hawlucha are out on the field!

Hawlucha closed the distance towards Blissey with a Low Kick attack; while Gliscor flew through the Toxic cloud and lashed at the Minior with Night Slash!

The two opposing birds inflicted their slashes and kicks effectively, and while they were able to dish out the first of the offensive strikes, that was expected with her commands of setting up the terrain. Both flinging backward, especially Starburst the Minior, they had taken the hits head-on- but there was determination in both of their eyes to continue, even if one of them had been shielded with its rocky shell.[break][break]

It was sweet that Alexei was advising her during their match, proving to her that there was indeed an educational objective tucked within the battle. "Then I'll do just that~! ♡ I'm excited for the day they won't need assistance in their execution, for I hope that may come soon, mes fleurs~! ♡" She exclaimed, stroking the hair of Meowmeow within her arms. Now all she figured she had to do was find out the best strategy at taking these two assumed-to-be flying types down, hoping to not have to resort to stalling with Fuschia's effervescent healing abilities.[break][break]

"Fuschia, show the little bird your fairy song~! ♡ And Starburst, pink diamond!" Desiree commanded the two, their reception marked by their channeling of special energies. Humming and holding her hands outward, Blissey's voice manifested clouds of pink energies directed toward the inbound Hawlucha, attempting to inflict damage with a DISARMING VOICE. Amidst that song of the fairies, taught to her by the many that had floated around her treehouse, Minior summoned an array of glistening pink gemstones. Launching them toward the Gliscor, glistening with energies found deep within the caves of the earth, it attempted to strike with its POWER GEM.

He was here to give his friend a nudge in the right direction, after all—maybe it was a good thing she came by his Gym first! Get settled down with battling and all that.

He popped a jelly bean into his mouth and let it sit there for a while as he watched the battle unfolding out on the arena. While the Hawlucha was surprised at the sudden shockwave of noise that caught him unaware (which resulted in a hit), he shook his head before suddenly taking a leap into the sky, before coming down on the Blissey with a Flying Press attack… kind of like how a wrestler would dive from the top rope!

His Gliscor, on the other hand, shook his head and frowned a little bit… wasn’t he supposed to be protected from the Toxic sludge or something like that, or was that…?

Either way, the purple Pokémon would leer at the incoming rocks; before suddenly weaving his way through the Power Gem attack and then once he was close enough, attempting to lash back at the Minior with a Poison Jab attack!

“Oh, before I forget,” he suddenly remembered.

“Since I can see you’re already telling them to use attacks with different commands, have you tried to use non-verbal signals to communicate with them for their attacks? Or maybe soft whistling, anything like that?”

Gliscor and Hawlucha are out on the field!

Hawlucha took the Disarming Voice attack head-on; before taking a running start and leaping into a flying Press on the Blissey! Gliscor, however, is poisoned; yet shakes off the effects for now and danced through the Power Gem attack before attempting to lash out a close-range Poison Jab at the Minior!

Stroking the soft fur of Meowmeow that politely rested within her arms, kneading small loaves upon her limbs graced by tattoos, Desiree watched as the battle continued to unfold. These birds that Alexei commanded were fast, quite the juxtaposition to the Blissey that peered up at them and tried her best to dodge; but Fuschia happened to fail every single time, unable to carry out any snazzy moves. Hit by the flying press, much like Starburst the Minior had been with the Poison Jab, the two made their respective grunts of temporary physical discordance and continual determination.[break][break]

As Starburst flew backward, however, its stone shell broke into fragments and released the secret color that Desiree had alluded to earlier; but it was a deep rose, a predictable, stylish, and coincidental option. "Surprise, they are pink~!" She exclaimed, taking a few steps back at the sight of her companions faltering. Now that the shields of Starburst had fallen, it would be able to flutter around with a big smile on its face, becoming much more capable in battle due to its lightweight.[break][break]

The advising of Alexei was additionally a coincidence, being that her next commanding of style and technique to her pokemon would involve such a way of whistling and noise. "That's funny you ask, yes~!" She said with a smile, raising one of her hands to meet her right ear as her lips divided.[break][break]

Desiree released an extremely high-pitched whistle tone, synonymous with the one that was known to lull dolphins into glimmering delight. With this, the two pokemon had moves that resonated with the same command, though entirely different. Matching the singing with some of her own, Blissey the Fuschia used SOFT BOILED, the egg on her stomach glistening. As for the Minior, it rapidly fluttered around the combat zone and released arrays of SWIFT stars, matching the colors of its freshly revealed body.

“Coming from you, I am not surprised you chose the pink core,” he continued with this knowing smirk on his face. He was then reminded of another individual in the region who liked the color pink, above all things.

(Yes, it was Miss Luka.)

“Have you met Miss luka chêne? You both share a similar aesthetic,” he teased. How would he put this… ‘fairycore’? Or something like that.

(He was more than certain his own ‘aesthetic’ bordered between ‘crazy’ and ‘birdcore’, if there was even such a ‘core’!)

And then… it came.

The high-pitched whistling noise very nearly sent him to his knees in a fit of irreverent laughter.

“Oh my god, it’s like those Primal of Starlight jokes I’ve been seeing in this online game I watch streamers play,” he wheezed. Good grief. Was the spirit of the holidays really in the air at this point?

It definitely seemed that way!

While his Gliscor had been bombarded with the Swift attack, he shook off the lingering effects of the poison before trying to lash back at the pink-colored Minior with a Night Slash attack coming from the snip-snapping pincers!

Meanwhile, the Hawlucha was taking measure of the Blissey, before switching to Low Kick while the other pink Pokémon was in the middle of healing. Looks like it was going to be a whittling game, now!

Gliscor and Hawlucha are out on the field!

Hawlucha contemplates on the next move, before trying to catch the Chansey by surprise with Low Kick! Gliscor, meanwhile, is hanging on like a champion; taking the Swift attack in stride while retaliating with a close-range Night Slash attack on the pink-colored Minior!

It was so delightful, I did feel kind of bad knocking her out to get to the finals, though." Reminiscing on the recent past, the guilt of advancing in competitions like that was the one con to having a competitive nature. But hers brought her all the way to take the crown of plentiful bounce, the first thing she had truly won in her series of contest challenges.[break][break]

A laugh met the smile on her cheeks, as Alexei's giggles at her high note were more than infectious. Plopping a couple more of the jellybeans between her lips, she could not help but wonder what Primal of Starlight alluded to. Was that what people were calling that beloved singer these days, casting out her stars when she unthawed every winter? And better yet, did she get a video game cameo? The pinkette needed to write that idea down in her mental sketchbook, for sure. Making soundtracks didn't bring as much success as she initially thought.[break][break]

Flinging back some more at the successful attacks of the Gym Leader's pokemon, the two would attempt to take the attacks head on in pursuit of their training targets. Running with hands reaching out toward its lips, the Blissey channeled another DISARMING VOICE in the direction of the Hawlucha, strangely mimicking the whistle tone provided much earlier. It was initially taken by surprise, but time was on the glowing egg that made it feel full of life. As for the Minior, it would twist through the air and launch another POWER GEM at the Gliscor, pink gems fluttering!

“Look, a contest is a contest—everyone’s out for fame, or glory. Or both,” he nodded her way; the moment the other explained where they’d met Miss Luka previously.

“All’s fair in love, war, and contests, right?” he added with this grin on his face; looking over to what his Pokémon were doing right now.

While the Hawlucha had managed to score a direct hit on the Blissey, the sudden noise coming from the pink egg Pokémon threw him off-balance; because holy shit what was that noise?! Why was his head starting to spin?!

“Snap out of it!” he whistled in the Hawlucha’s direction; while the Gliscor got pummeled full in the face (and body) by the Power Gem attack; before closing the distance and attempting to smash into the Minior with an X-Scissor attack coming from the pincers!

(Never mind that the Gliscor was starting to feel woozy right about now; aftereffects of being poisoned.)

Once the Hawlucha had shaken his head to clear out the ringing in his ears, he would then close the distance and attempt to land a Drain Punch on the Blissey—seeing as they’d healed themselves up; why not try to flip the tables on them again?

“You’re doing a great job so far!” he called out from his side of the field.

“My Hawlucha’s actually forced to think now, all things considered! Plus—bringing a Blissey to a fight will swing the odds in your favor when you time things right.”

Gliscor and Hawlucha are out on the field!

Hawlucha is caught off-guard by the Disarming Voice, getting disoriented as the attack sinks in! Gliscor, on the other hand, is hanging on like a champ however the effects of being poisoned is starting to sink in—

Hawlucha then used Drain Punch on the Blissey; while Gliscor used X-Scissor on the Minior!
