He’s still nervous. Even in the middle of his run, the nerves run high. He’s faced down monsters, ravenous Pokemon, and every horror of a poisoned Galar. Even still, Greyson is daunting. Though he might be the newest of the Elite 4, he is no less deserving than his peers. Cracking his knuckles, he readies for the upcoming performance.[break][break]
There’s a media frenzy. Before them is an enraptured audience, ready to spectate a legendary bout. With everything going on in this region, bids for the championship are rare. There’s too many moving parts, too much at stake. It’s hard for challengers and elites alike to find time.[break][break]
But find time they have. The people need their bread and circuses. What use is a Pokemon League that can’t even put on a good show? Bathing in the light, Navy swaggers forward. He gets the sense Greyson isn’t the biggest fan of him, what with that stunt he pulled the last time they met, but the sheriff can’t help but like the man.[break][break]
He fought like hell for someone he loved. He’d have done the same thing in his opponent’s shoes. Some part of him understands Greyson Connors, if only a little.[break][break]
“I’ve been lookin’ forward to this! Tried to come up with a team that synergizes well.” Slamming one fist against his palm, he grins at Greyson.[break][break]
“Say, after we’re done, wanna grab some mead? Hear your stock is damn good.”

Rarely was Greyson afforded an opportunity to test his mettle against someone, in stakes that were not life and death. Thus, his joy at being promoted to Elite Four, while offering a level of prestige, was all the more greater when it came to moments like this.

The crowd, already on the edge of their seats, quiet further. Greyson lets the tension linger, coiling it around his outstretched hand like a marionette. He squeezes as he speaks, beckoning forth the invisible strings that surround the crowd.

"Welcome. You've fought hard to reach this stage. It's only appropriate I rise to that challenge myself."

He chuckles, interrupting the flow of his speech.

"And yes, we can—" a quick scan of the crow showed small, eager children. "—drink responsibly later."

This draws a knowing laugh from spectators, and Greyson gives them a smile.

"You know the stakes, and the rules. As the standing member of the Elite Four, I will release my Pokemon first. Use this wisely. And—"

Two orbs are gripped in either hand, and with a flourish, he tosses both into the sky. Pearlescent beams of light race from their capsules to land near one another, hands outstretched, fingers interlocked. The crowd awess appropriately at the appearance of the Twin Pokemon. Both their cheeks spark into one another, empowering themselves for the upcoming fight.

“Well, well, well…” The sheriff whistles at the sight of his first two opponents. They’re tiny, but not to be underestimated. Seems like Greyson subscribes to kyle lopez’s school of thought. Two home grown children of Hoenn look across the field at him. Not big, nor scary, but deadly in the right hands.[break][break]
Greyson Connors’s hands just so happen to be the right hands.[break][break]
“These two? Damn, they’re cute.” Cute, and built to play off of each other. Throwing out his planned duo against two electric mice would be suicide. Time to do what he does best, improvise.[break][break]
“Alright. Napoleon, Toshinori. You two are up.” Throwing out his own ultra balls, a stream of red signals the beginning of the match.[break][break]
Napoleon’s strategy upon being thrown out is unusual, to say the least. Instead of going on the offensive, his eyes dart between the two electric mice. Sizing them up, he waddles up, pretty as you please. With a smile, a wink, and a wave, he tries to charm them. His kalosian namesake was quite the lady killer. It seems this Empoleon wants to keep his legacy alive.[break][break]
Toshinori and Navy both sigh. He’s just like that, or so they say. Quirky as the Empoleon is, he’s strong. They rescued him together from smugglers just last month with Melody Miro ’s help.[break][break]
The Palafin sighs, swimming through the air to gain momentum. Bouncing about, he jumps to and fro, swimming through the air, trying to take advantage of his partner making himself the center of attention. His acrobatics poise him to strike.[break][break]
“Break left, then right, boy.” So the trainer orders, so the Pokemon obeys. Toshinori bounces on the left mouse, swimming towards the right. For her, he gives a flip turn, bouncing off of them and disappearing into thin air.[break][break]
“He’s a little shy, Connors. Toshinori’ll be back. For now, meet Ta-” While his trainer tries to chew the scenery, something else takes the initiative and bounces out. Tormund is another new addition to the team. A stray cat from Dewford, he adopted him just one week prior to the match.[break][break]
And now, for some reason, he’s here. Had he switched his ball out with the Tauros’s?[break][break]
“Tormund.” Navy lies as easily as he breathes, acting like this is all part of the plan. “Gotta mix it up a little, you know?”[break][break]
“HAR!” The scraggly cat agrees.

Right off the bat the charm elicits a squeeing reaction from the twins, and Greyson knew instantly that any future physical attack would come at some hesitancy. That was fine, after all, that wasn't their speciality.

The Palafin's attack lands on both, including the effective recall, but they bounce harmlessly off the dolls that take their place at the last second.

His eyes survey the two Pokemon that are remaining. Was Michael Navidson's team largely physical? Was there a purpose to the Perrseker that he couldn't see?

He was intimately familiar with Empoleon and its abilities, after all, he owned one himself. The Perrseker was more of an outlier, and one he didn't have intimate knowledge of. That didn't change his strategy at the core, but it left room for doubt to manifest.

Nevertheless.

Already empowered by the PLUS/MINUS, the skill would serve no purpose from here on out. Instead, perhaps the steel-type would have something interesting?

Nothing seems to happen at first. Whatever the girls gained from this ability is not something flashy or self-evident. Tormund continues on as he normally would. The cat knows his role. On an ancient battlefield, he would have been a war chief. Raising his right hand high, he lets loose a cry.[break][break]
“HAAAAAAAAAAAAR!” The crowd edges to the end of their seats. Everyone wants to see what will happen next. Hoenn’s elites tend to have bombastic, larger than life Pokemon. Today’s challenger is known for using dragons, yet he challenges Greyson with a scraggly cat.[break][break]
Nothing seems to happen. Tormund blinks. Once again, he raises his hand.[break][break]
“HAR?”[break][break]
…nothing. At least he can adjust. Bouncing to the side, he tries to gain the attention of the gals. Turning around, he wags his tail at them, making a rude snipping gesture with both hands. The taunt is meant to rouse them. He’s seen the way they swoon at the emperor. With the halo they’ve got around their heads, he’s sure they’ll pay attention to him.[break][break]
An insidious finger goes to the metal coin on his head. Metal meets metal. It shouldn’t be that loud, but even Navy feels a shiver of displeasure run down his spin at the metal sound.[break][break]
“Napo-” Navy opens his mouth to command his Pokemon, but the emperor is already on it. Seizing the initiative, he swerves to the side, lining up the perfect shot. Steel energy gathers in his mouth. He fires a flash cannon at the charmed mice, waving for Tormund to dive out of the way.[break][break]
“Nice!” Navy can’t help himself. Sometimes, two Pokemon just work together well without much trainer input.

Both were moves that pierced his Pokemon's substitute; an unfortunate turn of events. This delayed his strategy, but didn't entirely mark him out— adaptation marked a great trainer from a mediocre one and at this level, you were expected to not just be great, but the best.

A flash cannon follows, oblitering the dolls the twins have been hiding behind. Greyson clicks his tongue, contemplatively. He pushes the crowd's reaction further with his next statement.[break][break]
"Not a bad combination!" He says, canines flashing in excitement. "Let's turn it up!"
[break][break]
A beam of red energy signals the minun's return as a Lapras takes the field next to her short, substituted companion.
[break][break]
"Sing!"
[break][break]
Unaffected by the imposed restriction on non-attack moves, she bellows out a song that's both melodic, and haunting. Most of all, it induces a heavy sleep.

Left with little to do but attack, Plusle's attack is bugled by a sky-splitting crack of thunder as a massive lightning bolt descends onto the Empoleon.

On the surface, he’s smiling. Inside, the sing induces equal parts nervousness and a sensation of tittering on the edge of sleep. Greyson’s pokemon are kind enough to wake him up. Whether it’ll have the same effect on his Pokemon remains to be seen.[break][break]
The sound of thunder rings across the arena. Big things can sometimes come in small packages, or so the platitude goes. Navy’s heard about Greyson through reputation. He’s been there through some of Hoenn’s toughest battles. Unlike his fellows, the champ-in-the-making hasn’t seen Greyson fight much.[break][break]
Damn if he doesn’t know how to make a good first impression. It jogs memories of seeing the man battling across a hellish plain. He cut a striking, heroic figure back in Galar. He’s just as impressive in the waste land called reality.[break][break]
“Holy…” Catching himself, the sheriff knows he must think fast. Momentary anxiety overtakes him as a gloved right hand races to his belt. To onlookers, he looks like a gunslinger going for the draw. His brain is thinking a mile a minute. Mariner or Hattori? Pelipper or Greninja?[break][break]
Hattori. Gotta be. It’s always Hattori. His little frog is second only to the black dragon.[break][break]
Tormund is recalled. In his place emerges…seemingly nothing. A pokeball opens, but nothing seems to jump out of it.[break][break]
From his vantage, the elite 4 can see what’s going on: Alyssa’s shadow bubbles. From it emerges the tiniest Greninja most trainers have ever seen. What he lacks in size he more than makes up for in speed and fury. He jumps up, shadowy kunai in hand, basking in the powers of ghosts. While the one-eyed shinobi knows he won’t be taking his foe out in one blow, he can distract and damage.[break][break]
A shinobi is one who is patient.[break][break]
“Heal up, Napoleon.” Navy urges. Between the fresh threat and the charming sway his empoleon held over the mouse moments before, perhaps he can find a moment to roost. The thunderous hit was enough to make him stumble and nearly fall. One more hit like that and he’s done for.[break][break]
Once more, he thinks of Kyle.[break][break]
“I’m glad Hoenn’s got you, Connors. Just want you to know that. Arceus…this is fun!” His heart’s beating madly. Fighting down those feelings, he looks forward with the fixed gaze of a warrior.

Admittedly, he was glad the Cat was off the field; its abilities made the battle more difficult than he would've liked. Luckily for him, it'd be asleep the next time it took the field too.

Her song over, Lapras pushes her intent into the world around her. She releases another haunting note into the ether as her attention shifts back to the battlefield. At the same time as the Greninja's strike, a HEAVY RAIN starts to drizzle down slowly before finally coming in a downpour.

Lapras cries out in pain, but her shelll armor was not to be underestimated. Whipping her neck back to come face-to-face with her unseen attack, she shoots off a blinding ray of confusion.

On the other side of the field, Greyson's Plusle is watching the Empoleon behind small paws, eyes peaking through the cracks of her fingers. The battle and the spectators were certainly flustering her; but, it wasn't like she was attracted to the Empoleon. She'd just look away. Right. That's all she had to do.

Still under the effect of the previous taunt, she beckons forth another explosive thunder. This one, guided by the rain dance, was sure as hell going to be unpleasant. All the while she's purposefully pulling her attention elsewhere.

"Cherish this feeling!" He laughs, giving the man across from him a cheeky grin to follow. "You'll miss it when they announce me the winner!"

“I’ll cherish it, alright.” In the eye of a hurricane, he sits with that confident smile on his face. When the scales tip, men outside this arena will dissect every move made on both sides. Fortunes will be exchanged today. While this match isn’t one that will determine the fate of the region, it’s just the bread and circus the people of Hoenn need.[break][break]
“I’ll cherish this high. Things look bad…but I believe in the team I’ve built.” Any fool can read the writing on the wall. That bolt of thunder comes for Napoleon. Screeching, his skeletal system flashes for the amusement of the crowd. It’s brilliant. It’s dazzling. The roost was entirely undone by one strike. Hattori flails about in confusion.[break][break]
At least he’s afforded the right to switch in now. Amidst this pouring rain, he hopes to use this field’s strengths against the man with the home field advantage. He was hoping to save this girl for later, but he’ll have to pull her out now.[break][break]
“Mariner, go! Surf! Hattori…trust me!” There’s a stone fixed on top of a broken wristwatch. It serves as a bridge between master and mon. Hattori’s heart race accelerates. He feels the confusion fade away as white light overtakes him. The shinobi launches himself heavensward, watching as the surf tries to push Greyson’s Pokemon together.[break][break]
“Freeze! Freeze! While you can!” While the bird screeches, directing a tidal wave towards the elite’s team, a beam of concentrated ice forms in Hattori’s mouth. Before the battle bond was once more kindled, his world was one of confusion. Up was down. Left was right. Now, spurred by his Lord’s words, there is only focus. A shinobi is one who serves. Ice cascades from his maw, hoping to freeze the Pokemon below solid.[break][break]
“We can do this!” He shouts words of encouragement at his team. “Hattori! I’ve told you from the get-go, you’re my lynchpin!”

Ima keep it real chief i d k whether I get 2 moves or 3 on a k/o switch-in but fuck it we ball. Empoleon faints. In comes Pelipper. Pelipper uses surf to try and push Greyson's 2 Pokemon together. Greninja mega evolves and uses ice beam to try and freeze them. I think mega evo cures confusion.

The field is consumed in the majesty of mega evolution. Greyson, like the spectators, watch with eager, wanting eyes, as the Greninja emerges from its pearlescent shell. It's timed perfectly with the wave that consumes his two Pokemon.

The Plusle is taken like a leaf in the breeze, but the Lapras fights and gives the current enough so that, when the beam of ice comes, only half of the water-type.
[break][break]
It was enough. At least, for the small mouse Pokemon. In a flash of light stained cerulean, the Plusle returns.

"Good teamwork," he says, reaching for another orb. With a gentle toss a Vespiquen takes the field. Her golden carapace slowly begins to shine with the brightness of the sun, though, it's nothing of her doing. In the center of the arena, his Lapras embraces her own mega evolution. Utilizing the distraction, Vespqiuen releases globs of toxic liquid. Even if they miss, they'll saturate the already soaked field, hide in the puddles, and become a hazard to any Pokemon ignorant of their footing.

Meanwhile, the frozen ice shatters as the Lapras emerges. She opens her maw as a torrent of water (hydro pump) rushes after the Greninja.

“Hattori!” Navy thrusts a hand out at his Greninja. His heart is a war drum. It beats in time with Hattori’s. Though no sync stone binds them, their battle bond links their souls. Navy doesn’t need to say anything out loud, but he does it anyway. All for the crowd. All to show them that Greyson and himself are their defenders, and neither will concede lightly.[break][break]
“Substitute!” The hydro pump slams into a life-sized Melody Miro plush. Someone in the crowd must really like her. Hattori flicks through the shadows, snaking his way to an opponent unseen.[break][break]
Mariner shrieks as the poison takes hold. Trembling, she resolves to make the most of her time left on the battlefield. She owes Navy that much.[break][break]
“Mariner, you’re the eye of the hurricane.” And that tells her all she needs to know. Under the weeping sky, she conjures harrowing winds. A hurricane sweeps the battlefield. Navy’s red scarf flicks wildly in the wind. From where Greyson’s standing, perhaps the elite can see the seventh ball hidden there beneath the scarf. That’s not for him. Not today. It’s insurance should Rocket crash their party.[break][break]
“Now!” And that is all Hattori needs to hear. Even queens die. It is not Lapras’s shadow he strikes from, but that of Greyson’s queen. Hattori’s shadow sneak is hidden by the winds, his shadowed kunai striking out at Vespiquen.

The downpour all but ensures the Greninja is able to slip away easily, rising behind the Vespiquen and lancing out with a blow that cracks the carapace of the bug-type. She hisses, a trilling noise that somehow rises above the storm, and mentally sends an attack order to the grubs below.

"Stop that Hurricane!" Greyson yells, voice straining to rise above it all. There was only one thing that could be done, after all. Maw opening, Lapras releases a beautiful, haunting note that settles onto the chests of all those in range. Then, as sudden and deadly as nature could be, a sheer cold permeates outwards. At this tempature, nothing, not even galeforce winds, had a chance.

Recognizing the attack was just as dangerous to herself, Vespiquen recalls the attack order and shifts to a defense order. summoning all her grubs to form a iridescent shield around her. She'd lose valuable resources, but saving them wouldn't matter if she was unconscious.

But not now. That’s another K/O for Greyson. Recalling her to the confines of her pokeball, it falls upon the trainer to keep up momentum. If he stumbles here, he loses.[break][break]
He can’t. Not after all the promises he’s made. Not when the people cheer for them both.[break][break]
Even when times are tough, he has to keep smiling. Drawing another pokeball, he cries out a command.[break][break]
“HATTORI! DROP A SMOKE BOMB!” A shinobi doesn’t question. A shinobi obeys. Hattori draws his smoke bomb and slams it into the ground, drawing up a massive smoke screen in the middle of the field. Red light streams into the smoke.[break][break]
Toshinori is back. Having slipped into his ball to change, he’s ready to bail his trainer out. Victory tastes best when clutched from the jaws of defeat.[break][break]
“Ha HA!” His Palafin laughs, charging straight for the mega evolved Lapras. It serves as a landmark in the smokescreen, something anyone could readily find. Gripping his fist tight, he slams into her with a drain punch!

Pelipper is ~~frozen solid~~ K/O'd! Greninja takes some hits from the attack order and drops a smoke screen after the sheer cold. Navy throws out Palafin, who is now in hero mode. Palafin uses drain punch on Lapras.

The onslaught had clearly taken its toll, evidenced by the Lapras's heavy-breathing. Combined with the tax of Mega Evolution, and the subsequent drain punch, he couldn't rationalize keeping her on the field anymore. Returning her to the ball, Greyson withdraws the water-type from the competition.

The battle was still far from over with, however. Releasing his Togedemaru, Greyson aims to turn the tide of battle once more into his favor.

"Defend yourself!" He urges to the queen, watching as the grubs array in a shield once more around her. It lacked the depth, and width, of before, but it would do. Safe behind the walls, she begins to roost back to full health.
