"No way, man. It's on the inside what counts." Howard said pointedly, munching on popcorn as Shirley blinked at the Leafeon, before letting out a yawn that smelled like a mixture of Megalopolian breath and saltine crackers. "You have to be like, really in character for it to be considered cucking. Like, think of yourself as a separate person."

Truly, Howard Slayte and Tempest Quinn were two of Team Rocket's brightest minds. True intellectuals, they were. Howard had had dozens of these conversations back when he was a student. These conversations didn't even faze him, anymore.

"You should test it with Cillian, bro." Howard said as the stampede scene began. "Like, both of you should wear Team Rocket uniforms and document the results like true academics. Write a paper on it. Get that grant money."

Wait, the stampede scene was beginning. Hold on hold on hold on! Howard watched with bated breath as Brycen-Man dodged the heard of various stampeding Pokémon. Howard could feel his heart beating as he leaned forward to watch the scene unfold. "They just don't make actors like they used to, man. I swear to Arceus."

Then, the Roto-TV decided to ruin Howard's life.

Again.

"Wait. What?" Howard blinked in surprise, before looking at Temp. "Shouldn't that be disabled?"

Wait, an AMBULANCE? How the fuck was an ambulance going to get to Sootopolis? If one somehow made it through the Team Rocket blockade, then Howard would have to give the Hoenn healthcare system credit. They did not fuck around with platinum members.

"WAIT, WAIT! STOP! I CAN'T AFFORD THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!" Howard scrambled forward towards the television, as if to stop it from bricking his bank account. Little did he know, however...

His cries had awoken the husband. A few rooms away, Howard's doom stirred...

It wasn't the first time Tempest Quinn had entertained guests while Cillian was sleeping. It wouldn't be the last. It was nigh unavoidable with the erratic sleep schedule of the Rocket underboss; so long as they kept the volume down, Cillian tried his best to be accommodating.[break][break]

But here's the thing: he's a light sleeper.[break][break]

Howard is being very loud.[break][break]

The sirens in the distance are also loud, and it's not as if a man as paranoid as Cillian Quinn can just put in a pair of earplugs because Arceus forbid some wannabe hero tries to break into his house while he's asleep—[break][break]

So, yeah. He wakes up. His head is pounding. His mouth is dry. And for some fucking reason, his phone is alerting him that an ambulance has been called to the address? Squinting irritably at the screen, he calls one of his contacts.[break][break]

"What? My heart's fine. You think I'd bother with an ambulance if— just cancel it. Fuck's sake."[break][break]

He's grumpy by the time he steps out into the hall. Scowling. Shirtless, with a canvas of scars on display. MIASMA follows in his wake. And that's when he lays eyes on the unintentional offender of howard slayte.[break][break]

"I know my husband." The Rocket underboss does not yell. He does not even raise his voice. But there is a threatening undercurrent in the tightness of his tone. "I know he'd have had the sense to tell you to keep it down." Though he speaks of Tempest Quinn, he doesn't look at him. His golden gaze pins his guest. "So what is more important than my restful sleep?"

howard slayte screams. The horror of poverty in his tone.[break][break]

Tempest sits up, a dog yelping as it's thrown off of him. The Growlithe whines, the fire type curling to roll over and ignore them. Popcorn scatters on the floor.[break][break]

"SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Temp grits through his teeth, trying to shush the other, a finger pressed to his lips in some type of warning towards the other.[break][break]

Then Cillian Quinn comes down the hall.[break][break]

Tempest throws himself back on the couch, groaning as he covers his face. It's not howard slayte's safety he's worried about.[break][break]

"Nooooo, he'll never get back to sleep now!" Lamented. Cillian got so little sleep! It was a constant battle of wills and heartfelt pleas and sometimes physical punching to convince the other to lay down.[break][break]

This is when the ROTOTV decided to make things worse.[break][break]

Somehow, in Howard's fumbling to stop the TV from causing his financial ruin, he had cranked the volume up. ALL the way up. And activated the surround sound system. ALL of the around sound system.[break][break]

The Rotom inhabiting the TV blinks at Howard, the wide grin stretching on the screen again.[break][break]

"ROTOTV IS RENTING 'AFFORDE THA' FOR HOWARD SLAYTE. TRANSACTION SUCCESSFUL. LIMITED EDITION DIRECTOR'S CUT EDITION HAS BEEN ADDED TO HOWARD SLAYTE'S BILL! BZZT!"[break][break]

The whole room shook, the screeching from the ROTOTV thumping in the ground. Tempest and many of the dogs yelped, the man covering his ears and gritting his teeth.

"What's more important? OVERDRAFT FEES!" Howard shouted as he mashed at the RotoTV remote with a passion never seen in Sootopolis before. "The Rustboro Credit Union's overdraft fees are RIDICULOUS! I was already in the single digits when I stepped through the door! What do you th-"

Howard turned.

He saw Cillian.

His soul died.

Sorry. I'm very sorry, uh, Mr. Quinn. Sir. I'mgonnagonowBYEEEEEEEE!"

Howard Slayte was gone remarkably fast. It was incredibly impressive to see someone apologize ten times in three seconds. It was an art form that only appeared in the most gruesome of Team Rocket torture methods: being locked in a room with Cillian Quinn. It was comical, watching the man's expression as he turned to see the legendary Cillian staring at him with the same expression that one had when getting the wrong dish from a restaurant.

When faced with such an expression, Howard did the smartest move. He bolted like a Raikou huffing shoe polish.

As Howard scrambled across the living room towards the exit, he dodged everything that came in his way. Dogs, carpets, feral Eeveelutions. His Aerodactyl returned to her ball instantly as he booked it. Howard reached the door. Relaxing, Howard opened the door.

It was locked.

About fourteen times.

"Arceus, I swear..." Howard breathed as he started with the first bolt. His hands were slick with sweat as he attempted to dislodge Cillian's security. Howard was an experienced ruin hunter, he had broken into ruins with nothing but a napkin and a packet of sweetener, but this was something else entirely. This wasn't a ruin. This was his boss's house.

The boss with the Lugia. The boss who could cut his pay. Howard didn't know which was more terrifying.

"C'mon, c'mon... What sort of paranoid mobster has FOUR hatch locks?" Howard muttered to himself as he fumbled with a twelve-digit combination lock, which he began to pick with the tip of a pen he kept in his pocket. Watching the archaeologist work was a marvel, given he broke the lock in three seconds. Howard turned back to watch Cillian glare at him. His blood froze. No, that wasn't Cillian's face staring back at him.

It was Zev Harcourt 's. He remembered the night with the black crystals and murder.

His hands worked faster. Finally, he was left with the final lock: a knob.

Howard turned it, opened the door, and ran down the road, screaming into the distance. Hopefully he would be okay.

Meanwhile, the RotoTV blared at Temp and Cillian. FAILURE TO PROCESS TRANSACTION. A 100 PD OVERCHARGE FEE WILL BE SENT TO THE ATTACHED BILLING ADDRESS. OVERCHARGE FEE CANNOT BE PAID IN TWELVE INSTALLMENTS DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS. ANOTHER OVERCHARGE FEE WILL BE CHARGED.
