and yet... he doesn't cut through skin. he simply stops.

her eyes are owlish when they turn upon him, confusion blinking through angry haze like the faint beacon of a lighthouse on a foggy night.

"what... are you doing?"

clarity doesn't come at once. it's bits and pieces, sunshine peaking through a cloudy day. she sees faint hints of reality shimmering in and water begins to fade away from his body. he is more flesh than water now and the honedge in her grasp falters.

"i -"

what is she doing? what's happening here?

"you're letting me go?"

her gyarados snarls beneath her and she wants to take the out... she wants to run. the urge has never felt so strong before.

He said as he pocketed his knife, and turned on the spot; turning away from Illiana to walk back onto his dragon, his head turned over his shoulder as he waved her off; he didn’t have much to say, but he did have some.

”I just don’t like killing people I don’t know, can’t remember someone if I do that.” One of the arbitrary rules that he made so he could justify such an action to himself. ”Don’t need ya name, but mine’s Kouji. Sea Salt is bad for your hair, so you should get the hell out of here.”

But he didn’t count on that, no-one who arrived on this island just left; he was one of them. Every battle survived meant another battle to run into.

her gyarados takes the opportunity to place some distance between them, as if waiting for the other shoe to drop...

and it never quite comes. instead, only a misplaced gratitude for the man who's allowing her to run.

"um, thank you."

it won't do her any good, she knows, yet it's a kindness all the same - rare for this scenario, for who she is and what she has become.

"my name's illeana."

she doesn't owe it to him, he said as much, but it feels odd to know his name and to not offer her own.

and with that, her gyarados turns and begins to swim off into the steadily gathering mist until they're nothing more than fading figures in the night.
