A strange visual aura came over Robin for a moment. She flinched, rubbing her temple as she tried to make sense of what she was witnessing. She turned away from the support tents she had been assisting at to help trade out pokemon for fellow Rangers who needed more terrain support in the fight. "Gah... what is that?" She stumbled a few steps forward before she was brought to her knees. The aura transformed from something abstract filling her vision to something more surrealist.

The terrain around her blended away from the camps and blurred into focus as a pink, goopy landscape. Small specks of visuals scattered throughout the land. She found it hard to see clearly, but she caught glimpses of herself and her pokemon throughout the area, flickering in and out of sight sporadically. "What is this?"

The sky was a deep purple, but the world seemed mostly desolate besides the random, gooey environment that seemed to slowly be shifting. Parts of the goo seemed to levitate or brush up against other parts, much like a lava lamp. "Is this a psychic attack?" She felt strangely stiff, rising to her feet without any sense of direction.

he sees it from afar, recognizing the pink smog from the ultra deep sea. from the shapes that he'd seen with annalise henderson.

[break][break] "wait - "

[break][break] he pops his head out of the tent, squinting as the mist unfurls from the landscape. bubbles of color glimmer against the glare of the sun.

[break][break] "wait! robin!"

[break][break] the head ranger sprints out of the tent without a second thought. it doesn't matter how much he knows about robin coello - they could be enemies, acquaintances, it doesn't matter. she's a ranger, so she's automatically one of them.

[break][break] he leaps for her, just as the terrain around them warbles and blends away. his body covers her, for just a moment, as they blur into pink, goopy lava. "it's - " he swallows, standing up as he squints at their surroundings. "it's the mist."

[break][break] 'it's not going to happen like last time. i won't let it.'

[break][break] "they had this at the ultra deep sea front - were you there? it's - it's just a dream. it's not real." he glances back at her, standing protectively in front of her. "stay close to me, okay?"

Thank the stars she isn't alone. Ollie's support takes the edge of the foreignness of the situation. She doesn't know a lot of people all too well with her travelling and new status as a Ranger, but she knows when she's around someone she can trust. Not that she can necessarily understand those she trusts, though. "The mist," she echoes. She shakes her head at his question. "A dream? A shared dream?" She has a sleepwalking problem, but she's never wandered into a group dream with this level of cognizance before.

"When you say dream... nothing that happens here will be real?" The alien landscape felt scarier with that knowledge. Why would it exist if it didn't impact reality? "What pokemon can create such a thing as this?" It was psychedelic, almost. But she didn't think there were any pokemon around that could do such a thing, at least not with the visual aura she had seen. It certainly wasn't some grass/poison type monstrosity they were facing; of that much, she was sure.

"How do we leave?"

[break][break] an uncertain look rises to ollie's face, before he forces it down. how was he supposed to explain all of these things without giving rise to the feelings dwelling inside?

[break][break] "the mist - it takes all the stuff you have buried deep inside, and kind of brings them to the surface. but it's not real. it's just - a dream. a hallucination."

[break][break] ollie takes a breath, steadying himself as he looks at the expanse of pink-orange-purple that stretches out ahead of them in empty waves. it seems like there's no end to anything.

[break][break] "it's not a pokemon," he corrects her. "it's the rifts."

[break][break] the ones that had opened up after the meteor struck hoenn during the mt. pyre front. it was supernatural things well-beyond ollie's means of explaining. he suddenly wished that Eva Morales was here.

[break][break] "we don't. well, we can't. we just. we have to wait it out." he looks to her, flashing her a smile. "but we can do that, right? it's just me and you here."

Robin wanted to feel comforted, but Ollie's explanation just made her feel more uneasy. She liked the idea of their situation being caused by a rift even less than it being a psychic attack from a pokemon. "Just wait it out," she echoed with hesitation. "Okay. We can do that. She looked around the horizon, shapeless and shifting. It was uncomfortable to look at, but she couldn't help but feel like there was something around them...

There.

"Look! Let's follow it!" A shiny Duskull appeared around a mound of sunset-colored goop. Robin scurried to her feet and chased after it with abandon. "I saw one of these years ago in a dream. It's good luck!" She didn't elaborate any further as she followed the ghost which was always just a little out of reach. She found herself working through a maze of stacked-high goop as she pursued it around bends and corners, but it didn't worry her.

Not until she got to a clearing. No Duskull in sight. Instead, some strange creature she had never seen before stood before her, almost like a pokemon she knew, but not quite.

the mist warps and shifts, making complicated emotions rise up in him. but ollie forces to tamp it down, focusing on the person next to him.

[break][break] it is easier to think about things other than himself, especially in moments like these.

[break][break] it is easier but that doesn't make it better.

[break][break] he breathes in.

[break][break] "look!"

[break][break] he blinks.

[break][break] a shiny duskull stands before them, floating amicably along the path. robin coello seems far more excited than him, but her enthusiasm is infectious. "oh - okay! yeah! let's do it!"

[break][break] he scrambles after her, keeping up easily. they leap and jump and skirt around goop that slides along the pavement, the sight of the shiny duskull bleeding in with the pink and orange mist.

[break][break] it nearly fades away into the sunrise.

[break][break] they run straight into a clearing, and ollie almost runs straight into her.

[break][break] "huh - what - "

[break][break] 'is that - ?'

[break][break] he recognized them. in the lab, with GIDEON GRAVES.

a great tusk. it roared infinitely, aiming to swallow the duskull in it's tracks.

[break][break] "hey! we have to save it! c'mon!"

[break][break] his bouffalant HEAD CHARGED towards the beast, who rocked the earth with a STOMPING TANTRUM.

The Duskull led them into the jaws of danger -- a goliath of a pokemon stood before them, nearly stomping on the ghost type. She forced herself into action at Ollie's beckoning, but as she got close, the tusks of the pokemon swung dangerously in her direction, and she forced herself to dive to the ground instead, covering her head in case it stomped on her. "W-why is a hallucination bringing in pokemon I've never seen before? How does this mist make this seem so real?"

She didn't want to look like a coward, but this entire league versus rocket battle was shaking her to her core, and this oddity was not helping her nerves. It was especially disorienting to see the symbol of good luck from her dreams appear. Seeing it in danger felt foreboding, but she couldn't get close enough to save it from the tusked pokemon.

It moved towards her to avoid further assault from the Bouffalant, and she quickly rose to her feet to scurry away. "I won't be hurt in real life if this thing crushes me, right?"

concern flashes in his emerald gaze as he throws himself to the ground too, avoiding a roar and tusks meant to cleave his head in two.

[break][break] "i- we don't really know. they say the mist draws in from your inner emotions and makes it into reality."

[break][break] even if there are things they would have never seen before. even if there are things that they wouldn't have expected in a million years.

[break][break] maybe robin cared so much about that duskull that the mist wanted to get rid of it. or maybe she cared so much about it that she worried that she would lose it to some other force before she could get to it again.

[break][break] either way:

[break][break] "come on," he urges, reaching over to point towards an alcove. "we need to get to cover!"

[break][break] he didn't want to answer her question, because even he was afraid of the answer. they weren't in the dream. the dream had just come to life in their reality.

[break][break] as the head ranger sprinted towards cover, his boufallant attempted to defend them. with another roar, it attempted a THROAT CHOP to cleave one of those dangerous tusks.

Robin followed Ollie's lead, noting his own uncertainty. The dream-mist needed more study, and it would be a great area of exploration for Rangers to undertake, but Robin had no interest in being a cautionary tale. She tucked herself into the alcove with him, turning to watch his pokemon assault the tusked beast.

As the bouffalant fought valiantly, Robin felt a presence behind her that wasn't Ollie. She turned to see the shiny Duskull there, waiting patiently as if he had not just been in danger of becoming a footprint on the ground. "Duskull?" Robin reached out and grabbed him, holding him tight to her chest as if they were long bonded allies rather than a girl and an illusion. "Are you ok?"

As she asked the question, the pink environment seemed to flicker, then wash away. A dizzy spell hit her hard and she released the Duskull, holding onto the ground to brace herself as the mist subsided. She gagged, fighting the urge to hurl. Still, she was grateful to feel the actual ground instead of an abstract pink abyss. "Oh Arceus, that exit is disorienting...."
