Guard duty was far from the most glamorous duty to get forced into, but it was the one Hideo was given. It didn't feel fit for a Gym Leader - he should be on the front lines, exploring the island and uncovering what mysteries it may hold.

He knew that's what Uxie wanted him to do. In fact, it'd even gone into the island itself, looking around on its own. It promised him that it'd be discrete, though he still had the underlying anxiety that it'd get spotted.

For now, he walked along the beach, Orbeetle floating above him. The Pokemon served as his eyes as he patrolled around, keeping watch for any Rockets that might be trying to infiltrate the island; he had his Iron Valiant on him for the actual fighting, if any were to be found. All he had to do was fend them off until they went back - or didn't have any Pokemon to fight back with.

after abandoning the last ship she’d been on, she was taking a break on a stretch of beach when she saw him: perhaps the most unmistakable gym leader of them all. talented as hideo kino was, it baffled her how the league could send a child to war.[break][break]

then again, there was the case of Eris Halla , who knew war like the back of her small hand. this was just the hoenn way.[break][break]

eyeing the orbeetle in hideo's company, lulu kept walking, wondering if she could simply slip past peacefully without drawing their attention. the poipole over her shoulder watched curiously as well.[break]

Hideo's Orbeetle notified him of a woman approaching from the opposite side of the beach. "Do you recognize her?" he asked, hoping she might've just been a League member they'd come to the island with, or encountered at one of the League basecamps.

He received a dis-confirmation from his Orbeetle - it didn't recognize her.

That didn't automatically mean she was Rocket - she could've just been a civilian that wanted to wander the island. He knew he would've if he hadn't been deployed with the League - and he'd been accosted more than enough times prior to being a Gym Leader. And this woman hadn't immediately attacked him, unlike many Rockets he'd encountered.

But rules were rules: if they weren't deployed by League, they had to be escorted to a League Camp so they could be sent back to the mainland.

"Excuse me!" he interrupted, his attention on the lady, "There's active battling between League and Rocket on this island. You can't be here right now, Miss."

Arceus, it felt awkward being on this side of this conversation.

"Sorry, I'm gonna have to escort you to where League can help you safely leave."

a bluff. her party had been considerably weakened at that point. she was no in shape for a battle, but there they were. he’d noticed her from afar.[break][break]

she eyed the familiar telepathic bug-type in his company knowingly. how clever.[break][break]

”you should move on. i won't be leaving with you.”[break][break]

but she had a strong feeling they weren’t just going to let her walk on by. an escape flew high in the air, but it was a last resort for a ride home. better to at least try to get a little further on foot before calling it a day.[break][break]

Hideo was past being surprised when people he didn't know knew who he was; such was the result of being a public figure. The casual dismissal that went with it did sting a bit, even if that'd been something he'd been long used to without his newfound authority.

The Orbeetle watched over the woman as well, keeping an eye on both her and her Poipole. Looking for any sudden or suspicious movements from either.

And it noticed her reaching for something, immediately warning Hideo with its Telepathy - even if it was clear by her words that she wasn't going along with him.

"Miss," Hideo said, reaching for his own Pokeball, "I'm…gonna have to ask you to come with me."

He did his best to sound calm, but there was still a fine tremor on his arm, the grip on his Pokeball tighter than it needed to be. He still didn't know if this lady was just some civilian that went sightseeing at a bad time, or a secret Rocket here to cause havoc - and Hideo was rarely the one to start a fight in either case.

But it was hard to ignore that a fight was going to break out.

And he had to assume anyone he encountered was at full strength, and ready to put that strength against his own.

she gave a deep sigh. this was not going to go the way she wanted it to. might as well get it over with.[break][break]

the gym leader would not be given a warning. the orbeetle in his company was surely plenty capable of alerting him as she tossed out her klinklang’s ball. as it appeared, its gears spun faster and faster.[break][break]

”go on, penrose. you too. show me what you can do.”[break][break]

the ultra beast gladly obliged, floating forward and making a face at hideo’s orbeetle. when the klinklang decided to start off with a metal sound, the poipole offered a helping hand by screeching just as loudly. lulu winced, regretting her decision.

Hideo didn't know what Pokemon the woman was about to let out; it could be something as small as a Pichu, or as threatening as an Arcanine - and he had to assume it was going to be the latter. The moment she threw her ball out, Hideo's Orbeetle told him such - and he responded in kind.

His Iron Valiant was out, and it was ready to fight - though it didn't act just yet, merely standing even as the Klinklang's Metal Sound rang out (along with the Poipole's imitation), its only reaction being a small distortion on its screen-like eyes.

A reaction was far more evident from the Orbeetle, and more-so from Hideo. The Pokemon held its hands to its head, but Hideo was left reeling from the noise, hands to his ears. A small set of profanities came out the boy's mouth.

He could only manage to get his focus on the battle for a moment, after his Orbeetle told him to order the paradox Pokemon. "Don't let it make anymore noise!" he shouted - so he could actually hear himself speak.

The Iron Valiant finally went into action, a glaive growing in one of its hands. It went for a downward swing on the Klinklang, a Night Slash aiming to silence the loud Pokemon.

lulu watched as the iron valiant stepped into battle. she was fairly certain the paradox pokémon would easily best her own, but this would be a good study. she could compare its techniques to the notes she’d made on Navy ’s own iron valiant.[break][break]

”impressive paradox pokémon. where did you find it?”[break][break]

the glaive met metal, and though there was no give on the surface, night slash’s dark energy cut straight through the klinklang. it shook in the air, seeming riled, before levitating back to create some distance. its gears turned faster and faster before two were launched in quick succession at the paradox—a gear grind.[break][break]

meanwhile, the poipole levitated around, watching and considering openings for an attack.[break][break]

The ringing was still going on in Hideo's ears - but at least he could hear what the woman said to him. Not that he was eager to talk to her. "That's none of your business," he answered, still speaking loudly so he could hear himself.

The less information he gave this person, the better.

The Gear Grind flew at the Iron Valiant, who had just enough autonomy to at least deflect one of the gears with its glaive - while lacking the autonomy to try evading the other one. Gear grinded against its metallic body; it was a good hit, but the Iron Valiant didn't budge much from it.

It would continue with its previous order - but faced with a super-effect attack, it would use one of its own: it'd get in close to the Klinklang, engaging in some Close Combat, a series of heavy slashes aimed for the Klinklang.

the ultra beast fired off a dragon pulse, just as unaware as lulu of its ineffectiveness on the iron valiant. though she’d done her research, she had not yet remembered every detail.[break][break]

The Dragon Pulse hit the Iron Valiant dead-on - and it didn't even make the Pokemon budge. There wasn't even any sign of (additional) harm to its body, and it didn't even turn to acknowledge the Poipole that fired it, its attention squarely on the Klinklang.

Hideo, meanwhile, got over the ringing ears well enough to hear how the battle was going - and it seemed to be going in his favor. "Arceus, I don't want it making that sound again," he said, intending to only mutter that.

His Iron Valiant heard it loud and clear - and went about solving it the one way it knew how: it went for another Night Slash on the Klinklang, bringing down its glaive on the metallic mon.

lulu’s eyes went wider with surprise as the dragon pulse failed to have any effect on the iron valiant. its typing was different, like others she’d seen and researched by now.[break][break]

”no more of that, penrose. it won’t do any good, evidently. try something else.”[break][break]

the klinklang continued taking hits, unable to charge another attack quick enough before its gears were inevitably stopped by the paradox pokemon’s swinging glaive, time and time again. once more, lulu’s poipole tried to save its partner offensively, vomiting a venom drench onto the battle. though it also drenched the klinklang, the poison ran off its steel gears and left it unharmed.[break][break]

Hideo's Orbeetle pulled him away, to avoid the boy getting any of that Venom Drench on him. Not that it would've done any harm to the unpoisoned boy, but that stuff was rank. He could even smell it on the ground - it was his nose's turn to suffer.

His Iron Valiant wasn't as fortunate, getting drenched with the foul-smelling venom - but easily shook it off; there was no poison in its system to exploit.

But the threat was noted, and Hideo informed of such. "Ugh, knock out whatever Pokemon is spewing that stuff," he ordered, pinching his nose shut. A direct order - and with more specific parameters.

The Iron Valiant went for a swing at the Poipole, aiming a Spirit Break at the baby Beast.

the spirit break hit true, sparkling pink rays stabbing through the poipole’s very motivation to keep going. the ultra beast fell to the ground, woozy and miserable–but not fully down just yet.[break][break]

”brush it off. you’ve got more in you,” lulu encouraged, and penrose sat up with a strange wail of protest. ”up,” she commanded with more force.[break][break]

the poipole lifted into the air again, a bright blue frown now arced across its face. the ultra beast, having exhausted nearly all of its aggressive tactics, simply flew forward in a charge to plainly headbutt the iron valiant. it was no special move or power. it simply was what it was, delivered with all the force of a frustrated toddler.[break][break]
