his teeth are already stained with blood. it slakes his throat, running in rivulets down the front of his armored chest. tamer and dragon rest for some time, a protocol freya is begrudgingly practicing this time around. but she can't afford brazen anger to carry her through these long days.

they failed last time. and if she'd played her cards differently, maybe she could have made more of a difference.

fingers slip under her pauldrons, rubbing thoughtfully against the knotted flesh just above her collarbone. are you sure you weren't meant to be a rocket? the rocket admin's words haunt her still, though for different reasons this time around. she knows her place. she tells herself that she knows her place.

a representative of hoenn's people. this is where she belongs.

the blood is a flaking copper stain when they rise again. his scales shimmer with the spray of a few hyper potions. rested and hungry for blood, they ascend towards their newest trespasser.

An armored woman with golden hair, astride the back of a Salamence. Reports from past conflicts allowed Zev to identify her instantly as freya morningstar, twice-Councilwoman. He flew straight at her on the back of his Charizard.[break][break]

While his Pokémon unleashed a SMOKESCREEN to cloud the skies around them, Zev opened a Pokéball to release his Xatu. The bird cut silently through the haze, using his psychic powers to locate the League representative and her dragon.[break][break]

As soon as he found them, he unleashed a PSYCHIC in their direction.

the seas below them roil with blood, but no sharpedo circle its surface. scales shimmer and when the smokescreen rolls out, lyune's hiss makes waves roll.

darkness wraps around them and freya reaches behind her, wrapping her cape around her mouth and her nose. her eyes sting, reddening, and without the means to see through the smoke, she flattens herself against lyune's neck and closes her eyes.

a psychic attack meets resistance. xatu will no doubt feel the light screen fractals shivering over the dragon's large body, tethered by strings of light in the ocean. a dragonair crests the surf, her tail aglow.

she draws on the reins and lyune's wings thwump heavily, dragging them up and out of the cloud of smokescreen. he circles above and upon a scratchy growl from freya, blindly unleashes a pulse of draconic light below.

A loud, pained squawk filled the air as the DRAGON PULSE collided with the Xatu in the smoke. The Pokémon plummeted through the dark haze, recovering just before he hit the waves.[break][break]

Several flaps of his wings redirected his course, bringing him closer to the Dragonite that had emerged. As soon as he drew close enough, he blasted a CONFUSE RAY in her direction.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Zev's Charizard carried them skyward, in the direction of the Salamence's attack. As they emerged out of the smoke, tendrils clinging to leathery wings, Charizard unleashed a DRAGON BREATH at the councilwoman and her mount.

the xatu falls out of the cloud and freya's gaze flickers away from it, attention turning back to the smokescreen. down below her dragonair wait. aeris' gaze, locked on the air, goes cross-eyed and blurry as a confusion blankets her mind. the concentration is broken and those spun ribbons of light fade.

above, lyune loses his protective shield.

but from under the surface of the water, dodging a lashing of her confused sister's tail, comes sypha. she breaches, maw frosted with ice, and a thin beam aims to clip the xatu's wings.

and up above, as the ribbons unravel and half of lyune's side is exposed, the rider emerges. the charizard's dragon breath encroaches on them and lyune snarls. he tucks one wing and roll and the heat spreads over his back, swathing freya's cape in blue.

the sync stone twined in a braid sparks and her sygna suit hums to life. RAGE knifes through her and she snarls as lyune's barrel roll turns into a tucked dive, claws outstretched to swipe at their attacker.

The ICE BEAM came out of nowhere—or so it seemed. It struck Xatu squarely, coating fragile feathers in rime and frost. The bird plummeted a second time, this time crashing into the surging waves where Freya's dragons waited.[break][break]

Water boiled and frothed, turned red with slaked bloodthirst. White-and-green feathers floated to the surface, soiled with crimson.[break][break]

Zev did not notice, so focused was he on the Salamence that came bearing down upon him and his Charizard. The DRAGON CLAW landed, tearing a gash across his Pokémon's hide.[break][break]

Charizard roared from the agony and flapped her wings hard to put distance between herself and her attacker. She followed up with a FLAMETHROWER spouted in the Salamence's direction.[break][break]

By then, the smoke had all but dispersed upon the wind.

into the waiting jaws of a dozen hungry dragons does the xatu go. in seconds, a horde of dragonair are upon it, latching onto flesh with their needlelike teeth. the surface of the water is a mess of writhing snakes, froth turning red, until only feathers are left coating the surface.

the smoke clears and through its last stringent tendrils comes a golden-scaled dragon. thalia, an unruly dragon, raised from hatchling to the beast she is now, bellows as the flamethrower curls against freya's side.

her cape protects most of her, but the metal workings along lyune's wings burn white hot and he snarls as the leathery membrane sizzles.

a fog lifts from the sea, a tempest spurred by thalia's anger. thunder cracks as one illuminated fist aims to smash down on the charizard's rider.

The THUNDER PUNCH came out of nowhere, sending currents of white-hot electricity flowing through Zev's Charizard. The Beast himself did not put up his armor in time, so he screamed with rage and agony as the sizzling energy coursed through him, too.[break][break]

His shout would have been chilling enough, but the voice changer in his mask distorted it, turning human sounds into a terrible, nightmarish howl.[break][break]

Even wracked with electricity, Zev's Charizard took advantage of the Dragonite's proximity. Twisting her long neck, she opened her maw and fired a point-blank DRAGON BREATH into her enemy's face.[break][break]

Zev clung on to the back of his Pokémon, desperate not to slip into the horde of ravenous dragons below. But just in case, he summoned his armor, the black crystals spreading across skin beneath his clothes.[break][break]

One hand reached down and drew his knife from its sheath. He slashed with the dark steel, trying to sink its blade into the Dragonite's flesh, seeking a weak point for a fatal blow.

metal bends and warps, cooling in a position that bends lyune's wing. freya swears under her breath and careens away, thankful for thalia's assistance. skithiryx emerges from her hip and lyune struggles not to snap at the black-scaled charizard as it uses flame and claw to loosen the device's skeleton.

below, thalia is engulfed in dragon fire. her pained howls turn into enraged screeches. wings flutter and claws scrabble for purchase on the charizard's hide. the rider is exposed now and she's so close.

scales burn and scatter in the wind, but she ignores it, eyes narrowed. her pupils warble and then she strikes, jaw darting in close to rip the life from his throat.

she bites with the force to rip through bone and she startles when pain explodes in her face as all of her teeth shatter simultaneously. blood pours down her front. she panics, lurching to the side, raw, pinkish flesh exposed from the charizard's earlier attack.

zev's knife slips into the wound and rips it apart. her intestines spill through, falling alongside her as shock and blood loss take their toll. her body falls lifelessly into the water. the writhing on the surface stops.

and then from above, freya screams.
