Shalin's smile grew as Maoja agreed to accompany her all the way to the end of Route 115's trail. "Oh, it's a fun one. You'll love it," she assured her traveling partner. Before she started, she heard Maoja's Poké Ball pop, the Cyclizar grabbing Shalin's attention. "They're great for inexperienced riders, and they can put on some real speed! They're so fast that you might get ticketed if you ride one at full speed on Route 110's highway." The dragon-type wasn't quite her style, though; she preferred Pokémon on the more exotic side: a ride Pokémon that would make her truly stand out.

"So you know Shoal Cave, north of Mossdeep?" Shalin asked, resuming her story. "You won't believe it, but there's this ice castle buried beneath the main caves, and that's where I met--"

Shalin heeded Maoja's warning about a Haxorus charging her, the girl diving out of the way. The dragon was unable to halt its forward momentum in time, sliding down a cliff to the level below. While it was reeling, Shalin slid down that same cliff, palmed an empty Poké Ball beneath her right hand, landed on the wild Pokémon's back, and firmly gripped the yellow scales.

The axe-mouthed Pokémon roared loudly, slamming itself into a tree and toppling it in an effort to wrench Shalin off its back. The dinosaur-like dragon, still bearing the girl's weight, dashed into a second tree, this time swerving around it before reversing course with a BREAKING SWIPE that caused the cowgirl to whoop loudly, her knuckles white from how hard she held her mount's scales to avoid being sent flying.

Snorting purple flames, the wild grew mad, bucking and writhing in a potent DRAGON RAGE that made even Shalin yelp from the sheer power it flung its muscular frame about. Yeow, that last thrash hurt! Her thighs thumping, she knew the next thrust would unseat her. Pushing the palmed Poké Ball into the Haxorus, her wild ride disappeared into the capsule, the rodeo girl rolling into the trunk of another tree at great speed.

Haxorus catch!

Maoja hurried over to where Shalin and that Haxorus had run over. The Cyclizar made sure she did not catapult down the cliffside alongside them though. A quick nip of her arm told her to stop, and she gave the creature a quick thankful rub on its nose.

“Shalin! Shalin! What’s going on down there?” She called out anxiously. It was hard to make out with all the distance, but a couple trees shook violently enough for her to notice. Must’ve ridden the thing, and Haxorus were not known for their complacency. Arceus, what was with the wild Pokémon today?

Silence followed. Maoja let out the breath she inadvertently held onto. Quietness meant she won! If the Haxorus had won, then it would not be quiet as it did unspeakable things to her in order to assert dominance! Even thinking about it caused millions of bumps to erupt on her skin. Did they really need to have blades on their face?

“Hold on, I’m coming down!” She stepped back quickly and shimmied onto Ride. Her arms wrapped tightly around its neck as it began the slow descent down. ‘Descent’ was perhaps not the right term. Despite the stability of the creature, she felt the ground dip drastically. At a snails pace, they slid down the side of the cliff.

By the time they arrived, Maoja threw herself off in desperation. Thank goodness, the ground! But more important matters needed to be attended to. She dodged around the wild Milcery and ran over to where Shalin probably was. “Are you ok? I couldn’t see what happened, but that was absolutely insane! Do you have some chemicals on you, that attract Pokémon? There’s a lot more out here than usual!”

Shalin somehow managed to hold onto her new catch despite the impact with the tree. She groaned as she got to a sitting position, then a standing one. Letting Letheia out of her Poké Ball, she climbed onto the arctic fox's back, the cool mist slowly soothing her bruises from the dragon-type's powerful bucking. "I... I should be okay. Just a bit shaken up. Absolutely worth it, though!" she answered with a weak grin. "Just... yeow, Haxorus can buck hard!" Admittedly, it was the first time she had tried riding a wild dragon Pokémon. Perhaps that was too much even for the so-called wildest Pokémon rider in the region.

Shalin could only speculate as to why there were so many aggressive Pokémon. "I don't know. Could have to do with the recent volcanic explosion near Meteor Falls."

Volcanic explosion? Maoja really needed to start getting that daily newspaper again. When the heck did that volcano explode? Maybe it was while I was at work, or that one night out on the town, or…

Focus, Maoja! Now wasn’t the time to wonder when the heck that happened. Now was the time to make sure they didn’t get attacked by any more Pokémon. “Hey, Shalin, listen, I’m not sure we should do that trip to Meteor Falls anymore. With that Haxorus and the Turtonator and Graveler, and apparently that volcano explosion…”

“Maybe let’s just head back? Re-schedule for some other time?” Maoja suggested. A small tang in her heart made the words painful to say, but their safety should come before a fun trip into the wilderness. Man, it sucked being responsible. To be young and reckless like the good ol’ days.

Well, not her good ol’ days. Craziest she’s been so far is anytime Ride does whatever it wants without her input. Terrifying.

Shalin was excited to get to work developing a bond with the new Haxorus she had captured. That dragon, unlike many of her other ride Pokémon, challenged her in a different way. Rather than agility or speed, the yellow-scaled dragon had sheer muscle power. It was enough power to fling her off if she wasn't on top of her game, yet not so much power that she would dislocate something if she absorbed the force of a full-strength thrash.

"The volcanic explosion was weeks ago and on the other side of Meteor Falls," Shalin explained, trying to convince Maoja to keep going. When she brought up the aggression of wild Pokémon in the area, though, she couldn't get around that. That was a real safety hazard even for younger, more experienced trainers. "You're right, though; you usually don't see Pokémon this strong around here. I'm going to have to file an incident report with Rustboro's current Captain. I wonder if I'll end up processing my own incident report once I take over for them."

Shalin nodded at the idea of rescheduling. "A rain check sounds good to me. Once this incident gets solved, how about we head back here and go riding again? I think you'd have a lot of fun."
