Caleb ran his hands through Barnaby's hair, tightening his grip on the back of the other man's head as his mouth began to work. Closing his eyes, he really could visualize the bed they'd so often shared in Motostoke, feel the breeze from the cracked window tickling his bare skin. Every movement was a memory, a lesson in nostalgia, and he soon lost himself to the pleasure incited by Barnaby's skill - believing, for a time, that they were the men they'd been in that waning dream.[break][break]
"Stop," he growled after a time, voice hoarse, loath to delay the release that had been building, but wanting something far more gratifying. He roughly pulled Barnaby back by the hair, then yanked him up - pleased to see the other man had clearly been enjoying himself nearly as much as Caleb had.[break][break]
For a moment, he brought a hand to Barnaby's mouth, thumbed his swollen bottom lip with a surprising degree of affection. A futile blue-eyed history drifted between them, and Caleb knew with utter certainty that this man would ruin him before he'd ever have a chance to make use of his blackmail.[break][break]
"Bedroom," he ordered, releasing Barnaby. He could take him right there and then, but this was a proper tragedy and act two had its place.

BARNABY FINCH immersed himself in his role. [break][break]

It was easy to pretend. He'd played this game a million times with a million different faces. Men, women, it didn't matter. Learning to mold himself to the whims of others was second nature by now.[break][break]

Caleb Harcourt wasn't special. The way Barnaby looked up into those ocean eyes, feigning love and devotion, was nothing new. The only difference now was that Caleb knew it was fake from the get-go.[break][break]

When he was roughly yanked away and pulled up to his feet, BARNABY FINCH retorted back with an innocent smile, "Mmm, but you were so close..." And when he felt a finger pressing down on his lip he saw it as an invitation, biting down gentling on the tip. [break][break]

Caleb's eventual order for the bedroom was a natural consequence of all that they'd built up and torn down here. [break][break]

Wiping the dribble from his chin, Barnaby took Caleb's hand and led the way. Up the stairs, second door on the right. Centered on the main wall was a decadently decorated bed, the linens already tousled from when he'd abruptly awoken earlier.[break][break]

He guided Caleb Harcourt to the bed and gestured for him to sit on its edge, leaning in between his spread legs to look down into the man's face. [break][break]

A stray thumb found its way to his cheek, stroking the skin there softly, affectionately, as expected of a paramour. [break][break]

"Is this the part where you make love to me?"

It was like looking into fractured panes of glass: a shattered mirror, spider-webbing outwards in a thousand different directions, each one more beautiful than the last. The memories were a heap of broken images - cruelty, tenderness, desire, devotion - and Caleb felt suddenly displaced, unable to ground himself in any one reality. Strong arms guided Barnaby onto his lap, straddled just right, hands splayed along hip and lower back.[break][break]
He'd imagined this countless ways, and every version had been a violent recompense. But this was some alternate path, some improbable probability, a bridge that connected past to present, dreaming to waking, hatred to love. This was something tender, something worth slowing down for, something sweet to the taste.[break][break]
"Yes," Caleb whispered to Barnaby, voice hoarse. "Yes, it is."[break][break]
It was a watercolor wash of deliberate, drawn-out love-making. They moved against one another in high-tide harmonium, ecstasy building until it was, quite literally, to much to bear. The release he'd been seeking came and went, and it was with a heavy-hearted exhaustion that Caleb collapsed onto the bed, drawing Barnaby to him in one graceful motion and holding him close - tangled as they so often had been, in the bed they'd shared for twenty years.[break][break]
This was not that bed, and this was not that Barnaby, but for a moment, it was enough.[break][break]
Enough to reassure Caleb that Barnaby had loved him, once.[break][break]
Enough to kindle the smallest hope that Barnaby loved him still.
