sootopolis smells really bad, mostly after it rains. it's different than slateport. something about being in a giant dome with what's basically standing water at the center evidently makes for a stinky city. or maybe she's just sensitive to it and looking for something to be upset about.

Naomi Sato loves this guy apparently. trusts him. promises parker they'll get along just peachy. nomi, who thinks a bowl of sentient alphabet soup are cuddle-buddies rather than cretins, is not to be trusted with this sort of thing. but parker adores her and zev is, at the end of the day, her superior, so it's not like she can say no to being back-up on this mission.

from what she's heard, he doesn't really need her though.

more and more, she's feeling extraneous. her whole bodyguard shtick from nomi feels laughable. what's she gonna do? punch god in the face if he tries to show her the 'wonders of the universe' again? absolutely not.

she's outside the bar, arms crossed, looking up when he approaches.

"ayo, beastie. 'sup?"

Zev stared at the woman who addressed him. parker jones. He recalled her from August's meeting at the Cave of Origin; she'd been selected to guard the entrance. She'd done the bare minimum that day, he supposed.[break][break]

"Jones," he said by way of greeting, his cold tone a sharp contrast to her casual one. "Let's finish this quickly."[break][break]

They made their way toward the docks, where smuggling ships waited. Zev did not often oversee these operations, but with the recent conflict on Route 105 having depleted a portion of Team Rocket's resources, replenishing their stores was imperative. Being a Beast did not exempt him from ensuring the syndicate's success.[break][break]

A pungent, sickly smell like GASTRO ACID filled Zev's nose as they reached the harbor. He could ignore it, but not the voice hissing sibilant whispers from the narrow alley they were passing.[break][break]

"Psst. Pssssst. Red or blue?"[break][break]

Zev stopped and frowned. "Did you say something, Jones?"

straight and to the point. fantastic. no, really. fantastic. the best jobs are always with an efficient, no-nonsense partner. parker can run her mouth, but when it's time to nut up and shut up, she can at least do the latter.

salty seamen wander about. it's too late into the night for anyone with a proper handle on their life to be out and about. they're able to steer clear of a puddle of rank vomit dripping through the slats in the docks, creating an interesting whorl of color on the gentle waves below.

parker nearly walks right into him when he stops suddenly. had she been humming? or singing? without thinking about it?

no, because she doesn't do that.

"uh, nah? maybe mr pisspants back there said somethin'?" she says and shoots a thumb over her shoulder. mr pisspants gives a gurgle in response, nothing more, and slumps back into his shitty dinghy.

"these jobs still goin' haywire? heard of some galarian shipment that got absolutely shat on a few months back."

Zev's eyes narrowed as he regarded the homeless man, slumped and snoring in the shelter of his tiny boat. Zev shook his head, turning to look at Parker. The voice hadn't been hers, either.[break][break]

He chose to answer her question instead, though he kept his senses alert for anyone else in the area.[break][break]

"Some of them. Our routes have become increasingly risky with Nautica patrolling the waters on behalf of the League," Zev said, resuming his walk toward the correct dock. "We'll see what the smugglers have to say tonight."[break][break]

An OMINOUS WIND blew through the harbor, howling like the soul of something damned. Tucked into the sound was the voice again, this time whispering in Parker's ear: "Red or blue?"

ah, right. nautica. the joint venture of parker's sea witch - who still, quite honestly, vexes her and those feelings are kind of hard to untangle so she doesn't - and her rat-faced, granola-stealing husband. the displeasure on her face, at least, covers up the confusing knot in her chest.

zev is focused on the mission. parker is focused on - well, she's not focused on anything, at the moment, except following diligently and being a Good Little Rocket - so she hears the voice loud 'n clear in her ear.

and she thinks of avery jones's hair, curling under her hat, that piece of her finally back after missing for so long and, without skipping a beat, says,

"blue?"

The ring appeared so quickly and suddenly that it caught Zev off guard. At once, his hand snapped to his belt for a Pokéball, but the sudden swarm of Vivillon spat out from thin air gave him pause. The chaotic flapping of their wings kicked up a HURRICANE, forcing Zev to brace against the high winds.[break][break]

"What the fuck is this?" he demanded, annoyance evident in his tone as he finished summoning a Pokémon.[break][break]

His Illumina Chandelure emerged amidst the gale, the flames of his body whipping around in a frenzy.[break][break]

"Get rid of these!" Zev ordered. The Chandelure chimed obediently and, turning to the bugs, aimed an INFERNO at one of them. Instinctively, the other Vivillon surrounding it shrank from the flames that consumed its body.

"fuck!?" is what she manages when the ring appears and a flurry of insects blows out from it. parker's dealt with her fair share of crazy at this point so she's, at the very least, quick on the draw.

amulius pops out as zev irately echoes parker's confused sentiments and the beast handles the bugs quite easily with his fiery chandelier. amulius swings at a couple though and parker finds herself fishing a ball out of her pocket.

'cause she knows someone who likes these things.

wait, does she? but the red light's already sucked one into a ball.

the rest of them flutter off or burn to a crisp at their feet. amulius nudges one with his yellow feathery foot and then shrugs.

"are we being haunted by a ghost that hates primary colors? d'you hear that too?"

Unlike Parker, Zev did not bother to capture one of the Vivillon. The few that were not burned to a crisp flew away on the night breeze. He watched their diminishing forms before turning back to the woman.[break][break]

"I heard it," he confirmed. He'd never experienced anything like it before. "No Ghost Pokémon that I know has this ability to summon other Pokémon."[break][break]

Had it been a Pokémon that caused this commotion? Or something else?[break][break]

"But I doubt an organization like the DRK Triad would resort to something so small and petty as this kind of prank, either," Zev mused aloud. For that's what the encounter had seemed like: a stupid prank.

she'd meant it mostly as a joke. but zev does not seem like the kind of person to get that parker meant it mostly as a joke. but now she's kinda sorta wondering if there is a pokemon out there that can just fuckin' summon other pokemon.

"i'unno, if i had mind-warping, brain-blasting dumb powers, it'd be kinda funny to fuck with my enemies."

she would love the power to yeet a bunch of angry krabby at angelo vestri, for instance.

"anyway, flying bugs aside, we still got a job to do. let's-a-go?"

Zev gave Parker a look that clearly expressed what he thought about that, then turned and started back down the street. "Let's go."[break][break]

Unlike the strange and brief incident with the Vivillon, the job completed without event. The smuggling ships brought the promised supplies from abroad. By the end of the night, the goods were stored safely in the appropriate harborside warehouses.[break][break]

On the way back into Sootopolis proper, Zev kept his eyes open and ears honed in for any sign of the hoop—or of the person or Pokémon that controlled it. But nothing interrupted his walk back through the city.
