Caleb wandered the lower district of Slateport City with little purpose, his direction aimless and his mind distracted. He knew he was looking for somewhere to grab a drink, and so the masochistic part of his brain urged him towards Howling at the Moon, the bar owned by his brother. It wasn't so much that Caleb feared going there: in fact, it was the opposite. He knew Zev would not harm him while acting out his civilian persona, and what Caleb really wanted, deep down, was a second chance at fighting the other man.[break][break]
Except, Zev was a monster and Caleb was nothing. A broken man, at best.[break][break]
I need to get stronger, he thought, for the millionth time since he'd escaped Sootopolis. He had a vague sense of how to go about that, but a part of him rebelled against it. A part of him just wanted to wallow in bitterness, consumed by resentment - of the League, of Zev, but most of all, of himself.[break][break]
Beside him, Nari froze, causing Caleb to look down at the Jolteon in surprise. The electric Pokemon's nose twitched, and he turned his head in the direction of a nearby alley. Caleb followed his gaze, brow creasing. Straining, he could hear a muffled whispering coming from the alley.[break][break]
"Hello?" Caleb called out, moving towards the sound.

Roy was a nomad by nature and that would be his excuse for winding-up the lower district of Slateport City. To be a nomad, you have to know how to adapt. You have to blend in with your surroundings. You have to convince everyone around you that this where you belong. Roy was good at that.

The truth was that he was simply following his ancestor's footsteps. His lineage was complicated, but it was only recently that he discovered that his blood was far more complex than water. Roy certainly didn't appear as a man with close ties to a family, but he also didn't fear his grandmother. He was only looking for answers and he was willing to travel to Slateport City to them.

In the search for these answers, Roy found himself on the same street as the distraught ranger. Balmung, Roy's charizard, was also attracted to the same presence that occupied the dark alley. "What is it?" Roy questioned the ranger from across the street. Balmung's tail-flame provided some sustenance, but it's distance from the alley and overall dimness provided very little as a tool.

A different voice answered, and Caleb turned to find another man approaching the exact same alley, a Charizard at his hip. The dim light from the dragon's tail-flame cast dancing shadows across the ground in front of them. Nari stepped in front of Caleb slightly; they were in the Lower District, after all. One couldn't be too careful down here, where criminals and thugs ruled behind the illusion of civilian normalcy.[break][break]
"I heard a voice back here," Caleb said carefully. "Was it you or - ?"[break][break]
"Red or Blue?"[break][break]
Caleb blinked. "What the - " The question had not come from the man with the Charizard. It had come from within the alley, a low hiss barely audible. He cocked his head, trying to make out anything else.[break][break]
"RED OR BLUE?"[break][break]
The hiss had grown into an insistent howl. Caleb stepped back instinctively, unsettled. Was it some kind of rogue Ghost or Psychic type Pokemon? Or was it a person, attempting to play a strange prank on any given passerby?[break][break]
"Blue, I guess," Caleb answered.[break][break]

The subtle fog and eerie silence presented a scene straight out of a horror movie. It didn't matter that they were downtown. An elaborate pattern of goosebumps had taken over the trainer's forearms. He didn't normally get scared. Not like this. It was all too strange. The ranger gave him nourishment through words, but just enough to keep his thoughts at bay.

Before the tamer could reply, another voice erupted from the empty alleyway. It was faint at first. He didn't have a chance to decipher it before it repeated the same words. It was louder this time and the trainer's mind raced for every other answer except for the question it asked. Any prank or pokemon could be responsible and this made him feel less scared somehow.

"Blue sounds good enough." He took a few steps towards the alleyway.

It happened so fast, Caleb hardly had time to get out of the way.[break][break]
Scrambling backwards, the Ranger watched, stunned, as several glittering Cryogonal burst out of thin air and into the alleyway. All around them, barriers erected, LIGHT SCREENS and REFLECTS that lit up the darkness with their glowing energy. A sinister cackling seemed to emanate from somewhere just behind them, but it faded before Caleb could discern its origin - human or Pokemon, he could not tell.[break][break]
The rogue Cryogonal seemed agitated, twirling about in the air in confusion. Did they travel here on their own or were they...sent? This was the sort of stuff scientists studied, rifts and interdimensional travel and space-time distortions. Caleb had no clue how any of that stuff worked, but he knew one thing: all of it was almost always dangerous.[break][break]
Well, he was a Ranger wasn't he? He was supposed to deal with danger before it could affect the average citizen.[break][break]
"Hey," Caleb called out to the nearby man with the Charizard. "Help me contain these things."[break][break]
With that, he glanced at Nari - but the Jolteon was already one step ahead of him. Summoning a crackling burst of electricity, he pounced onto the nearest Cryogonal and bit down with a THUNDER FANG. Caleb rummaged for a Pokeball, finding one in the pocket of his jacket.

This was unexpected. A barrage of snowflakes suddenly appeared in the scene. They were too far for Roy to make note of the peculiar portal they arrived from. The trainer didn't know what he expected, but it wasn't this. The ice-types summoned a variety of barriers and walls to close off the pair from the rest of the city. They had little time to react.

"Take 'em down."

And that's what Balmung did. Like old Christmas decorations, the charizard took down his targets swiftly as if he was embarrassed for leaving them up. A couple punches empowered by electricity took down two of the creatures while his flame-attuned jaws took down another. The beast's tail pranced around the fog with his body, appearing like candlelight against the darkness.

A plan? Caleb laughed, amused by the irony.[break][break]
"My plan was to grab a drink and forget about the world's horrors for a time."[break][break]
So much for that.[break][break]
Nari continued to assault the rogue Cryogonal. Caleb threw a Pokeball, then another. He had several on him, Ranger-issued, but they would not be enough to capture all of the snowflake-shaped Pokemon.[break][break]
"You got any Pokeballs? If so, start throwing. I'll take them back to the Slateport Ranger headquarters - League scientists will probably want to study them, given they literally appeared out of thin air."[break][break]
Such strange anomalies were becoming regular occurrences these days. Caleb eyed his impromptu companion, wondering just who this man happened to be and whether or not he was just some passing civilian or someone with a less savory history. Rocket was everywhere, hidden amongst the masses. All the same, he didn't seem like a bad guy; intuition murmured to Caleb that he could be trusted.

Returning only a smirk to his ally's remark, Roy kept most of his attention on the horde of hovering snowflakes. Balmung maintained his presence by taking them out in groups. Instead of using a steady stream of fire to take out the threat, the dragon resorted to melee attacks and maneuvers to remedy the situation. His fire-type advantage made lightwork of every cryogonal he could get his hands on.

"Sure. Whatever." He seems offended by the ranger's request.

It's not like Roy was made of money. Poke balls weren't cheap, either. Normally, he would've ignored the man's demands, but he felt an urge to humor him. The draconid wanted to see this through.

Using the ammunition from his pockets, the trainer starts tossing spheres at any cryogonal that doesn't flee.

It didn't take long for Nari and the Charizard to contain the hoard of Cryogonal. The bright energy of capture flashed in bursts, and within a few minutes, eight Pokeballs rolled across the asphalt, the alley quiet once more.[break][break]
Caleb sighed, willing his heart-rate to slow now that the surprise attack (had it even been an attack? Or just mere happenstance?) was over. He looked over at the man beside him, uncertain what to make of his somewhat noncommittal attitude. Well, he'd helped, hadn't he? That was all Caleb had asked for.[break][break]
"Thanks," he said, leaning over to begin picking up the Pokeballs. "If you give me your contact information, I'll have Ranger services compensate you for the trouble." He glanced down at the red and white ball in his hand, then tossed it at the Charizard's owner.[break][break]
"Here, take one for yourself. League doesn't need all eight."[break][break]
He paused, considering. The dark-haired man had a rough, unpolished look about him, sharp-edged and fierce, perhaps even proud...reminded Caleb of something - or maybe someone? - but he couldn't quite place what.[break][break]
"My name's Caleb, by the way. Caleb Harcourt."

Both the dragon and vulpine made lightwork of the snowflake barrage. They were no match for the two trainers. The stragglers were remedied with the poke balls and the rest was history after that. The pair successfully saved the city from another mysterious portal.

Pulling a device from his pocket, the draconid's fingers danced across the touch-screen buttons before revealing the screen to his comrade. "Here." The screen reveals his phone number and contact information. Normally, Roy wasn't one to give this information out to other trainers, but the guy was clearly related to the rangers in some kind of way and compensation sounded nice.

With his other hand, Roy catches the sphere launched at him.

"Thanks." He replies as he nonchalantly stuffed the ball into his pocket.

"The name's Roy." He left the introduction hanging, leaving room for potential collaborations in the future.
