Zev paced across the floor of Cillian's office, his agitation evident in each small movement. A deep frown slashed across his face; his eyebrows knitted together in simmering rage.[break][break]

Only a few days had passed since the efforts at the new island on Route 105 had ended. Team Rocket's scientists were abuzz with the crime syndicate's findings. Several grunts had received promotions for their efforts, while those who'd performed less spectacularly took to training in the practice arenas.[break][break]

Zev, on the other hand, had been nursing Neffatari Nzingha back to health since her fateful encounter with a masked operative. A member of Team Rocket. And that was precisely why he had come to Cillian's office that day.[break][break]

"Are you sure you haven't heard any reports of someone attacking this woman? Someone wearing a mask with a voice changer in it?" Zev asked, gesturing to his phone on Cillian's desk. A photograph of Nenet from the Mossdeep Space Center's staff page had been pulled up on its screen.

Cillian watches Zev pace. In contrast to the other's agitation, the underboss is still. Calm, at least in countenance.[break][break]

Yet all the same, he can understand the distress. Were it Tempest Quinn who'd been injured, he would tear the world apart to seek revenge. He supposes it's fortunate Zev isn't taking it out on his office.[break][break]

"I have no reports with that name," he says, as level as he'd been the first time. "There are plenty who disguise themselves as such; that hardly narrows it down. You understand the chaos this conflict has sown on both sides. I have hundreds of accounts to read through." He takes a drag from his cigarette to keep himself grounded, feeling her influence press upon his exhausted mind. Corruption urges him to anger, but the Sylveon curled in his lap keeps his MIND CALM. "When I look again, I will make note of anything that could fit your description of the scene."[break][break]

The cigarette is balanced delicately on the edge of an ashtray as Cillian leans forward.[break][break]

"But what do you expect will be done about it?" His challenge is not cold, but pragmatic. "Rocket doesn't know this woman's name. Her relation or importance to you. She was present on an active battleground. What did she expect would happen?"[break][break]

This is war, says the steely gaze of the underboss, leveled at the pacing Beast. And in war, there were casualties.

Speaking realistically, Zev understood Cillian's situation.[break][break]

He was right that so many of Team Rocket's operatives disguised themselves in the same mask and voice changer that Zev himself used. And it was true that sifting through reports—a dozen or more per agent—to find mention of one woman would take some time.[break][break]

"Fine," he said begrudgingly. There wasn't anything else to say.[break][break]

And Cillian was right on another point, too. No one in Team Rocket knew who Nenet was, or her relationship to Zev. That had been on purpose, at her request.[break][break]

"She was supposed to stay out of the way, avoiding the most congested parts of the island. And her Pokémon were supposed to protect her."[break][break]

But Nenet wasn't a trainer, and most of her Pokémon were pets at best. Zev wanted to kill them all and replace them with better tools, but she was so attached to them.[break][break]

He stopped pacing in front of Cillian's desk. "I'll put her on my file," he decided.

Out of respect for their not-quite-friendship, Cillian lets it drop, too.[break][break]

He arches a brow at Zev's explanation, however, unsatisfied.[break][break]

"What was she doing there at all?" he asks. "Civilians shouldn't have been anywhere near that landmass."[break][break]

His question is not sharp, but pointed nevertheless. If she wasn't a civilian, Zev would be stepping into hotter water than he might've expected, coming here. Yet the underboss is still careful not to express anger, lest the other shut up like a clam.[break][break]

He nods at the suggestion to add Nenet to Zev's file.[break][break]

"That would be wise," he agrees.

Civilians shouldn't have been at the landmass, but they had. Zev encountered more than a few on his patrols, lost and scared and totally in over their heads. Cillian's hundreds of reports would reveal that information in time.[break][break]

"She's a researcher for the Space Center," Zev said, forcing himself to adopt a measure of calm. If he said the wrong thing now, Team Rocket might turn their sights upon Nenet, not avoid her. "She told me that the island could be a potential site for a new telescope."[break][break]

Actually, she had not said anything of the sort when she mentioned traveling to the island. In fact, she hadn't known why she was going at all.[break][break]

To add truth to his lie, the Beast continued, "Nenet is the contact I mentioned at the meeting, in the Cave of Origin." A pause, and then the hidden truth: "She's my wife."

Though professional enough not to roll his eyes, Cillian's exasperation presents in the press of his lips. What fool would attempt to build a telescope on a landmass quickly turned warzone?

"Setting aside that it was an incredibly reckless decision," though not without making his opinion clear, "she ought to have understood the risks. This is Hoenn."

Hardly a few months could go by without some new dangerous phenomenon presenting itself; he'd learned quickly after coming here from Kanto that nothing could be treated lightly.

He doesn't bat an eye at the reveal.
[break][break]

"Congratulations," he says, not entirely without sincerity. "With Rocket made aware, any further attacks upon her without authorization will be dealt with accordingly."

Cillian's professionalism saved him from provoking the agitated Rocket Beast further; had he voiced his opinion on Nenet's lack of sense, Zev would have been forced to defend her. He would not have suffered an insult to her in front of his face.[break][break]

Unfortunately, Cillian was right about one thing. Safe in her observatory, Nenet had not fully grasped the very real danger the conflict between the League and Team Rocket presented.[break][break]

Zev had wanted to shield her from it all, but she was an independent woman. She'd never let him hold her back.[break][break]

"She understands now," he ground out, the memory of her broken arm and swollen ankle stoking the fire of his anger.[break][break]

Cililan's congratulations felt shallow and sarcastic, inappropriate for the conversation at hand. Other people's well wishes never mattered to Zev, anyway. He merely ignored it and commented on the rest of the other man's words.[break][break]

"What will you do when you find the one who did it?"

When Zev presses once more the issue of follow-up, the underboss arches a brow. He'd thought that much should've been clear... but, then again, love — or whatever passed for it in Harcourt's world — clouded judgement.

Mindful of such, Cillian retains his patience.

"I will question them as to what occurred," as was to be expected, "and I will inform them of her protected status going forward."

There is an unspoken challenge in Cillian's eyes as he watches Zev. Do you expect something more?

Zev's nostrils flared in silent fury at Cillian's answer, and, hidden beneath his clothing, his skin itched as crystals sprouted from his skin.[break][break]

Question them and inform them? How fucking mild.[break][break]

But Cillian was an underboss, and he was only a Beast; Zev had to defer to the other man's decision. The mere thought grated on Zev. If he were Cillian's equal in the hierarchy of Team Rocket, then the fate of that wretched operative would be in his own hands.[break][break]

The memory of a recent dream swam, unbidden, to the fore of Zev's mind: Hoenn conquered, and him in the seat of power.[break][break]

"Fine," the hitman said again, the single word abrasive and caustic.[break][break]

Then he turned to stomp out of the room.

Amber eyes narrow as the PRESSURE in the room heightens. She feeds on the spike of his anger, just as her own would fuel and debilitate him in equal measure.[break][break]

"Slow down, Harcourt."[break][break]

He did not often pull rank with Zev. He considered the man an ally, though he understood that they were not friends.[break][break]

But here? In his own office?[break][break]

His voice, as always, is quiet. But it sharpens with a cutting edge. "You disapprove. You've made that abundantly clear." On its own, that was not a problem. Plenty of people in Rocket disagreed with the way Cillian did things. He didn't do his job to be well-liked. "But you will not storm out on me like a child that's been told 'no'. You've been given your answers and even, though I did not owe them to you, my reasons. I am under no obligation to share with you the results of my investigation; I'd advise you keep that in mind."

The intensifying PRESSURE in the room caused Zev to stop at the door, his hand resting on the knob. He did not turn around as Cillian spoke, scolding him like a child on the verge of a tantrum.[break][break]

The Beast considered how best to act. Already, in the span of their short meeting, he had shown Cillian more than what he normally allowed people to see: the seething petulance when he did not get his way.[break][break]

How unprofessional.[break][break]

Zev smothered the instinctive reaction to wrench open the door and slam it behind him as he exited. While he normally didn't care what others thought, his reputation—and, ultimately, his access to Team Rocket's resources—depended on remaining within the upper brass' good graces.[break][break]

He and Cillian had a partnership, an understanding. To lose Cillian's trust with bad behavior was something Zev could not afford.[break][break]

And so the hitman willed his anger and frustrations behind a mask of steel and ice. He straightened his posture and half-turned to look back at the underboss. "I understand." A pause. "Thank you for your time."
